Girls Swim Del Rio League Finals

This year's Del Rio League Finals was adjusted for COVID protocols. Instead of swimming at Rio Hondo College, Whittier HS served as our meet location. Additionally, the prelims/finals format was scrapped for a single day - finals championship.

For the uninitiated, girls usually swim their events to determine which twelve swimmers will return at the end of the week for a boys/girls finals. But in this format, everyone gets this one chance to swim, and after we sort out the times, top to bottom, our top 12 swimmers will earn points to determine the team scores, but only our top 6 swimmers are awarded medals. As a veteran of the prelims/finals format, I can tell you that swimming next to someone else with a very similar time really gets the adrenaline pumping. The mind games that you play on yourself between the meets only adds to the drama.  And, it gives coaches a chance to talk strategy for the long distance events after watching the competition qualify. So this year's COVID friendly meet was an interesting change from the norm.

The boys' DRL Finals will take place on Friday.
