Clean sweep of the Pirates

Boys Swim warms up at Paramount Park

AquaDons Plunder the Pirates

111-47

Boys Varsity faced two opponents today, the Paramount HS Pirates and a non-standard 25-meter pool. There are three types of pools for competition, the 50-meter Olympic pool, which only club swimmers compete in during the summer or what you watch during the Olympics. There is the high school and college standard 25 yard pool. And then there is the 25-meter pool, also known as Short Course Meters (SCM). So, 25 meters is actually 27.34 yds. 50 meters is 54.68 yds... almost 5 yards (15 feet) longer. In the 100 meter swims, that is roughly 10 yds longer! When you check your favorite swimmer's times today, you will need this calculator to compare their times to last week. If you want just a quick estimate, multiple the meter time by 0.9 to get a yard time. For example, Jeremy Alonso's 1:06.09 split of the 4x100 free relay is 66.09 (60 sec is 1 min + 6.09 sec = 66.09) X 0.9 = 59.4 seconds. Gio Cabrera's 2:54.17 time in the 200 Free (174.17 sec) x 0.9 = 156.75 sec = 2 min 36.75 sec.

Although the AquaDons faired much better than their opponents, they only swept 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the 500 free. Michael Matchan, newest member of the 500 squad, Jeremy Alonso, 8th place at DRL Finals, and Gio Eguao, 10th place at DRL Finals. Other than the 500, the Pirates mad sure to stop all the sweeps from happening.

Although we only "swept" the podium once, an AquaDon took first in every single event. Congrats to Gio Cabrera (200 Free), Gio Eguao (200 IM), Jay Vera (50 Free), Jeremy Alonso (100 Fly), David Tarazon (100 Free & 100 Back) and Michael Matchan (500 Free & 100 Breast). Our 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay took 1st place. Six out of the eight individual events did end with the AquaDons going first/second - earning 10 pts min (6pts and 4pts) for each event. It was these strong finished that propelled El Rancho to earn over 100 points in the meet.

The thrill of the meet was the Paramount "A" team making an unreal charge in the last leg of the 400 Free Relay, but Robert Robles did just enough to hold off Joseph Monteverde, who earlier stole a point away from Jay Vera in the 100 Free, to secure a tie for second place.

Now, if only it was faster to convert the 50 Meter times to 50 yds. We'll just have to wait for next week opening Del Rio League meet against CIF Division 2  California High. They will put some pressure on our Fab 4 swimmers.

Varsity v Paramount

JV vs Paramount

Freshman bounce back and win 46-34.

Two really small JV teams provided a little last minute entertainment. Both teams decided not to field a Medley Relay, and Paramount wouldn't enter a swimmer until the 50 Free. This gave Fernando Antonio and Mateo Ramirez the chance to give the AquaDons a 10-0 lead with their 1-2 finish in the 2oo. Those distance sets at practice paid off. Paramount went 1-2 in the 50 Free, but Jared Gonzalez and Isaac Mejia secured 5 points, lessening the Pirate counter punch to make it 15-11 after four events. Fernando's solo effort in the 50 Fly widened the gap to 21-11. El Rancho's lead would increase to 20 points, thanks to a Pirate relay team DQ'ing on its last relay exchange. Paramount did pull our heads out of the clouds with the Back and Breaststroke events, making a 16-0 run on the team from Pico who still haven't found their JV Back and Breaststroke swimmers. Paramount didn't field a JV 400 Relay team, so the AquaDons cruised to victory, taking the 8 points for first place, and riding off into yesterday's storm cloudly sunset with a 46-34 win.
