It is preferred to use Cura in place of 3DPrinterOS for a slicer when you are printing in certain situations:
Using a different material than PLA (or Tough PLA) like PETG/T-Glase (stronger, food safe) or TPU (flexible), Nylon (strongest, durable)
Using special settings like vase mode (spiralize outer contour)
Using a different nozzle width like 0.8mm or 0.25mm instead of 0.4mm
You want the shortest print time, with the best quality, and the most strength for any material
You want to prevent supports in certain areas of your print
Ultimaker Cura is the slicer made by the manufacturers of the Ultimaker 3D Printers. There may be several reasons for why you would want to slice in there (or in another slicer) rather than in 3DPrinterOS
It may have different profiles that produce better print quality or work with materials not in 3DPrinterOS. Or it may use better supports that don’t waste so much material.
You can download Ultimaker Cura here.
Once downloaded you will have many of the same options as on 3DPrinterOS
Select the printer option in the top corner, and click Add Printer
Under Add a non-networked printer select Ultimaker S5 and repeat for Ultimaker S3.
Again, the S5 is the larger printer and the S3 is the smaller one
Next you are going to have to manually select the correct materials that are in the printer. This can be found on the labels on the printers or in the profiles on 3DPrinterOS.
Typically we use the Generic brands for our materials, except for if the spool is Ultimaker brand.
Sometimes you may need to change your nozzle or print core size. We typically use AA 0.4 for nearly everything but you may have some cases where you need to change the size to AA 0.8 or AA 0.25.
Note: Selecting the right material is crucial otherwise you could break the printer
You do not want to select an incorrect material because the temperature settings will be all wrong.
Selecting the incorrect nozzle (print core) size will cause a failed print.
Add your file in by dragging and dropping or File > Open File > From Disk
Click on the file to select it. On the left you will have all the layout options like moving, scaling, rotating, mirroring, etc
If you want to change the color from what is in Extruder 1 to Extruder 2, click on the 2 in the bottom left
On the top right, you have the slicing options
When you click on it, you will have all the simple settings for slicing, like layer height, infill, support, and adhesion (brim)
If you click Custom, you will have many more settings; however it is recommended that you do not mess with these without assistance from a staff member. You can break the machine if you do not know what you are doing!
Note: When printing with PETG or T-Glase you must click on Custom then change the "Build Plate Temperature" to 60
If you are only printing with extruder 2, or your print's first layer only uses extruder 2, you should search for the "Build Plate Adhesion Extruder" under Custom and change it to Extruder 2 to speed up the print and decrease wasted filament.
If you're interested in using vase mode, go to the Custom print settings, look up spiralize in the search box, and check the box for Spiralize Outer Contour.
When you are done picking your slicing settings, click the Slice button in the lower right corner
Once it is sliced, click Preview in the top center.
It is recommended that you check this to see how your printed part will look to ensure that you chose the correct settings.
You can see the different layers with the bar on the right.
Note: Cura's default adhesion type is a brim, so you may want to change it to a skirt (the default if adhesion is unchecked).
On the bottom right corner, select Save to Disk
It is very important that you change the file to .gcode format
In 3DPrinterOS, click the Add files button and select your .gcode file
It will ask you what printer this is sliced for, it is very crucial you select the correct printer. Selecting the wrong printer could break the printer. I sliced for an Ultimaker S3 so I will select that and click Save.
Now you will see the .gcode file in your files. It will only have the Print option and no option for Layout or Slice
You can click Preview to ensure everything looks good
Then click Print, select the desired printer, and send the file
