Spotify QR code keychain

Generating the Spotify QR Code

Step 1

To get a link for the code, open Spotify, find the song, artist, playlist or album you want,  and tap on the three dots next to it and select “Share.”

Press the Alt button in Windows or the Option key on Mac and click on the “Copy Spotify URL” option when it appears.

Step 2

Paste your URL in the box at www.spotifycodes.com and click Get Spotify Code.

Step 3

A panel will appear on the right with customization options.

For the laser cut keychain, change it to a black bar color with a white background and export it in an SVG format

Then click Download.

Making the keychain file in Illustrator

Step 1

Open Adobe Illustrator, the click Create new

Change the units to Inches, the color mode to RGB Color, and name your file.

Then hit Create

Step 2

Using the rectangle tool on the left toolbar, click and drag to create a rectangle on your artboard.

Step 3

On the right, under Transform you can change the width and height. We recommend 2.5 x 0.5 inches for a smaller keychain or 3.5 x 0.7 inches for a larger one.

You may have to click the unlink button on the right of the W and H boxes to change the dimensions separately.

Step 4

You can round the corners of your rectangle if you like by dragging the dot in a corner to your desired radius.

Step 5

Click on lower right corner of the rectangle tool to change it to an ellipse tool

Click and drag while holding shift to create a circle.

Tip: Holding shift in Illustrator locks the width and height dimensions of the object in place. Using it here will allow us to create a perfect circle rather than an ellipse.

Step 6

Change your cursor back to the black arrow cursor, then click on an edge of the circle to move it to a desired location for the key ring.

If you need to resize the circle, grab a corner of it and drag to your desired size. Just remember to hold shift so it doesn't stretch your nice circle!

Step 7

Go to File > Place and select the SVG file that you saved with your Spotify QR code. Then, click anywhere on your document to place the code in your design.

Step 8

Double click your QR code design to isolate its contents (you should see a grey bar appear on the top of your document), then select the white background behind it and hit delete.

You should have a transparent QR code now! Double click anywhere outside the QR code design to exit isolation mode.

Step 9

Scale down your QR code by dragging a corner while holding shift so that it won't resize. Then place it in your keychain.

Step 10

Now we need to change the edge of the keychain to RGB red to tell the machine to cut there.

Select the edge, click on the black Stroke box, change to Color Mixer, type the numbers 255, 0, 0 for R, G, B or move the sliders.

Step 11

Next, change the stroke width to 0.001 pt. This in addition to the color will tell the laser to cut there.

Step 12

Make this change to the circle as well.

Now your file is done! Save the illustrator file and put it on a flashdrive to put it on the computers connected to the laser cutter.

Now follow the First Cut guide to cut the keychain out of wood or acrylic. Please ask the staff if you have any questions.
