LPKF U4 Protolaser
Safety
This machine has many safety precautions built in, however, please follow the rules below.
Never grasp moving components when the system is operating.
Never open any covers while the system is operating.
The fume extraction system should turn on automatically when the laser is operating, however ensure you hear the sound of the fume extractor turn on when you start a job.
Rules
Always get a staff member's approval before operating the machine.
You must get approval before bringing in any materials not provided by the makerspace.
How do I get access to this machine?
Please follow the first PCB guide to learn how to use the machine. Any projects on the LPKF Protolaser must be approved by staff before it may be fabricated by the machine. Less experienced users will require supervision on the laser.
MATERIAL COSTS
The DCI Lab sells two types of material that can be used with the PCB laser
9x12" 1oz Cu FR4 is $8.00/board
9x12" 1/2oz Cu FR4 is $8.00/board
Scrap boards are free
Always refer to the Material Store page for the most updated pricing.
How does it work?
The LPKF Protolaser U4 is similar to the laser cutters in the manufacturing lab however this piece of equipment focuses on laser etching, which removes a very thin layer of material on the top surface rather than cutting or doing deeper engraving. This machine is optimized for prototyping circuit boards. These boards are made of a nonconductive material with a thin layer of copper on top. The laser removes sections of the copper to make the circuit board. .
