While the XJ1 is a quite safe machine, there are a few things to be aware of when using this piece of equipment.
As with any machine with moving parts, there is a danger of getting your fingers jammed when the motors are moving, so keep your hands clear while machine is embroidering.
Always pay close attention to the needle. Never use bent or damaged needles.
Always check thread tension while machine is in use, if it thread is too tight this can cause the needles to break.
Embroidery patterns over 20 minutes must be approved by a staff member.
Only staff members may change out parts (other than thread) like needles or sewing feet.
Users must demonstrate their ability to operate the embroidery machine twice with supervision before being allowed to operate it without.
Sewing projects must get approval before users may operate the sewing portion of the machine.
The Brother Embroidery machine requires that you have passed a quiz to use. Once you have access to the space, by filling out the agreement form, you may reference this page and the Basic Embroidery tutorial to pass the canvas quiz and try your first job. You may enroll in the canvas course here.
We will be charging per stitch count for the amount of thread needed.
The cost is $0.10 / 1000 stitches
You are permitted one free embroidery job per week up to 20,000 stitches.
Always refer to the Material Store page for the most updated pricing.
Because our embroidery/sewing machine is very impacted, you can reserve time in advance to make sure it is available when you come into the space. There are several rules around booking time on the machine:
The maximum length for a single booking is 2 hours
If no one is waiting at the end of your booking you are welcome to continue using the machine
The total amount of time you book per week cannot exceed 4 hours
You are welcome to use the machine for more hours if it is free and not booked
If you do not start using the machine within the first 15 minutes of your reservation you forfeit your reservation
Please make sure your file and / or fabric are prepared before the start of your reservation because that will not count as time on the machine
To reserve time on the machine, create a new event on the outlook calendar associated with your Chapman email and for the location search and select Keck N103 Embroidery Machine.
The Brother Stellaire XJ-1 is a top-of-the-line sewing and embroidery combination machine. Integrated with proprietary onboard software, it offers users an intuitive sewing and embroidery experience, and can also accept custom designs! The software in the machine translates images and designs into the stitches that are applied to the fabric. The machine is also equipped with a variety of sensors that can alert when threads are empty, when it's time to change colors in an embroidery design, and detecting proper alignment. The designs stitch in layers, similar to how a 3D printer works!
