Step 1: Open the template using Illustrator
Download and open this template (https://tinyurl.com/2sw47da2) using Illustrator to get started.
Note: the size for the ornament on the template is 2.5 by 3 inches. Adjust the size if necessary.
Step 2: Add in your design and text
To place an image:
a. Click on "File."
b. Click on "Place.
c. Select your image file and double click.
d. Place it on your white artboard.
To add in text:
a. Click on the "Type" tool on the toolbar located on the left hand side.
b. Type out your text.
c. Change your type to any font size or font style that you'd like for your ornament.
Make sure that your design only consists of black, white and gray colors.
Tip: An easy way to ensure this is to use Illustrator's "Image Trace" feature and select the "Black and White Logo" or "Shades of Gray" presets!
Tip: Select your text and click on "Create Outlines" to ensure that your font stays consistent on any computer.
Optional Step (FOR ACRYLIC ONLY): Invert the colors on your image and flip your design!
Invert the colors on your image by:
a. Selecting your image.
b. Clicking on "Edit" on the top tool bar.
c. Clicking on the "Edit Colors" dropdown and select "Invert colors."
Note: This will make your actual engraving appear the same as your original image before the colors were inverted.
Flip your entire design by:
a. Highlighting all of your design (image and text).
b. Clicking on the "flip horizontally" button as shown in the image above.
Note: This will make the front face of your engraved design on the bottom of the acrylic which will get you the best results in terms of quality.
Step 3: Engrave and cut your ornament!
Follow the laser cutting tutorial to engrave and cut out your ornaments!
