Social System (ideological conflict)/Middle East

This is our last unit together! We will come around full circle and show what you learned throughout the year. This unit will explore aspects of the social system, then on key components to understanding culture, so we can end with why terrorism occurs (why groups cannot get along).

Learning Targets

  • Determine how the social system (religion, family, customs & traditions, language, culture, etc) impact the other systems of PEGS

  • Evaluate the status of countries in the Middle East (focus on the history, PEGS, and then explore topics that interest you)

  • Analyze terrorism (the history of it, types of terrorism, terrorist motives and behaviors, etc) and then calculate how the US should respond to terrorism

Unit 6: Social System (ideological conflict - Middle East)

How does the social system cause conflict with the other systems of PEGS?

We will analyze aspects of the social system and how religion has shaped the Middle East (similar to countries in Africa, European powers made borders and decisions that impacted the area).

Intro activity: How well do you know the world's religions QUIZ?

What are the drawbacks of ethnocentrism? How do we develop a society of cultural relativism?

We will explore the components of culture and then how people react to cultural differences (ethnocentrism v. cultural relativism) as we discuss important topics related to the Middle East.

What has impacted the countries in the Middle East and how country relationships developed over time?

How has colonization impacted the countries in the Middle East? How would you describe the systems of PEGS in the Middle East? What events have impacted the development of countries in the Middle East?

Why does terrorism occur, and how should the US the respond to acts of terrorism?

What is the history of terrorism? Why would someone resort to terrorism? What is considered to be an act of terrorism? How should the US respond to terrorism based on the role the US plays with other countries, the impact of the international community, and how Americans view terrorism.
