4: SUMMATIVE
Foreign Policy and Impact of Conflict Summative
You will have EIGHT options to show what you learned about foreign policy and/or the impact of conflict on a country.
Option 1: Current Event & Conflict Analysis
Option 2: Human Right Investigation
Option 3: Six Party (nuclear) Talks with North Korea
Option 4: Explore a Council of Foreign Relations topic
Option 5: Analyzing flashpoints compared to the Korean peninsula/Japan & WWII
Option 6: Understand how genocide occurs and analyze a genocide to support what you have been learning in LA
Option 7: Investigate cyberspace to understand more about cybersecurity and the role countries play in making the world safer for us all.
Option 8: Learn about the history of conflict and choose a resource to analyze along with a Cold War "hot spot"
Enrichment
Determine the White House/POTUS foreign policy agenda. What are their national interests? What evidence (look at current statement & releases) do you have to support that?
Rank the Global Concerns facing the US, based on this article. Explain your list.
Option One
For this option you will get to explore current event issues to discover which event shows the foreign policy topics in action.
Then you will get to analyze a conflict to study the resolution and the impact of the conflict on the parties involved then and now.
Open the Google doc to see the instructions. Put the Google doc on your website under Unit 3.
Part I: Current event article about foreign policy
Find 3 current event articles that relate to foreign policy. Use news sources of your choosing such CNN, Fox. Newsela, etc. and look for articles from within one month that relate to foreign policy (how countries interact with one another).
From the 3 event articles you found, choose one current event article that you feel best relates to a foreign policy topic and/or foreign policy tool (see ISN - war, sanctions, recalling diplomats, etc). *Note, you can choose a video from a news source also.
Part II: The other part of this unit focused on conflict. Find a conflict that interests you, explain how it impacted the country(ies) involved (impact of conflict), and then why this was important.
You can choose pretty much anything that interests you and/or choose from the list below to guide your selection.
You will only focus on the overview so do not worry about getting down every detail.*
You can choose a BATTLE from a larger war, but then you would focus on how it impacted the outcome of the war*
Option Two
You can explore a human rights status to determine how the current status in a country (is the situation getting better or worse?) or track a right to see how it is upheld or violated around the world.
First, watch this video to understand the history of human rights and how far the human race has come to ensure rights are guaranteed for all humans, everywhere. What is the Declaration of Human Rights and how does this document work to educate, promote and protect human rights? Include this background in your project.
Overview
Then, you can use either or both websites to see which human rights are upheld or violated around the world, a region, or a particular country. You can also refer to previous years to see how the right status has changed over time.
Lastly, how are you going to educate others about the human right you studied or what rights in a country are like compared to other countries.
Option One
What right are you choosing to research?
What is the background of the right? How often has it been violated or what does it look like when it is violated?
What are you choosing to highlight about the right?
Where is the right violated most often? Why?
What should be done to protect the right?
Option Two
World Report 2017 Amnesty International Reports
What country are you choosing to research? Why?
What is background of the country? Where is it? What kind of country is it?
What rights are violated most often in the country? Why?
Go back at least one year. Is the right improving? How do you know?
1. Provide background about human rights.
2. Provide background about the organization you used to research human rights (Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International).
3. Then explain your option (use the prompts below to get started).
PART TWO
1. What is the connection to this unit, Political Systems (impact of conflict)?
2. What can/should countries in the international community (IC) to do about this human right?
3. What is the most important thing you learned from this summative?
Enrichment:
What are the top five most important rights? Why? Are they protected or violated?
Look at the US report. What types of rights are protected and violated?
Option Three
The tension around the Korean Peninsula is not limited to just North Korea and South Korea. The neighboring countries, along with the US, would like to see a solution to the issues. For this summative option you will get to explore more about the Six Party Talks in terms of what was going on, what the parties want to see, and how the problems in the area could be reduced.
For the summative you can explore the parties and predict what will happen the next time these countries get a chance to meet and discuss the nuclear program.
Put your work on the website under Unit 3.
PART ONE: Use these headings as an outline to create notes about the topic. Write the heading and then flip the heading into a question (ex: what is the framework?). Take notes to be able to answer the questions.
Introduction
The Framework
Stop-and-Go Negotiations
Objectives for Parties Involved
Obstacles to the Talks
Solving the Policy Puzzle
Which TWO headings are the most important for someone to explore if they wanted to learn more?
PART TWO: Options
Rank the six countries based on which is the most important for achieving the goal(s). Explain why you chose that order.
Choose one additional topic (look for "More On"). How did this topic help you better understand what is occurring with North Korea and the nuclear program.
Write a letter to the United Nations about what you would recommend so that the six countries could come together again and resolve the issues. Which foreign policy tools could be used? Why?
Enrichment
Add one more topic to the Council on Foreign Relations page. What would you want included and why?
Add a third heading to Part One. Why was this an important heading?
Add two more countries to the Six Party Talks. Which countries could be helpful in resolving the nuclear program conflict and why?
Option Four
What is something you are interested learning more that relates to foreign policy? Choose from the list below to explore topics on the Council of Foreign Relations.
Defense and security
Diplomacy and international relations
Economics
Energy and environment
Health
Human Rights
Politics and government
Social Issues
Directions
Choose a topic and then filter based on region, type, etc. The page may vary depending on which topic you have selected to research. Put your work on the website under Unit 3.
Options
A. Write a webquest/scavenger hunt that will take someone step by step exploring the topic. What should they research or focus on which on the page? Write directions guiding someone to explore the website by directing them to visit at least 5 points of interest that someone should aim to learn about. Provide questions to help someone understand what is important. Then make a "key" to check your answers (you can "file and make a copy" and then put the answers as a different color).
B. Choose 3-5 current events that are related to the topic. Write a brief summary about what was going on related to that topic (the 5 "W"s) and then a significance (why each event was important). Put the events in order of importance so someone could know which current event to learn about first.
C. Choose two articles that have similar themes (Human Rights - Women Around the World: This Week and Human Rights -Facebook Live: International Women’s Day, for example). Make a Venn Diagram comparing the two articles and then write a review (Where these good articles to learn about the topic? Was the information relevant or helpful for understanding the topic? What would you have liked to seen included? etc) OR after comparing the two articles write a response to the authors of the articles (did you appreciate the articles? Should they read the other article (if so, why)? etc).
ENRICHMENT:
create a visual to represent what you learned about
pair-share your experience with someone else who also chose this option. Write 5-7 interview questions and then their answers to what you asked them.
write a persuasive piece to Ms. Rueckert and/or our class about why we should learn about your topic
Option Five
Flashpoint refers to a spot where conflict could (re)ignite and cause further problems beyond the regional area. This option will allow you to explore
What is happening between India and Pakistan? What is the issue that needs to be resolved?
Why did the creation of Israel cause so much turmoil in the Middle East? What are other issues related to the conflict?
How do these flashpoints compare to the Korean peninsula?
Enrichment
What are other flashpoints worth learning about?
Option Six
What is genocide? Have you ever wondered what is genocide or where has genocide occurred around the world? This summative option will allow you to explore six Eastern Hemisphere acts of genocide.
You'll start by exploring the Pyramid of Hate and the 8 Stages of Genocide to get a foundation of how genocide occurs in a country. Then you will get to choose from six different places where genocide happened during the 20th century. Options 1 & 2 will guide you during the analysis process to better understand the genocide. Part 2 will then make the connection back to this unit and understanding the impact of conflict in a region.
Enrichment
How do we make sure the world does not forget about genocide? What is the danger with people not knowing the history? Article
Choose another genocide to study and compare how the two genocides to determine if there were any patterns to demonstrate similarities or distinguish differences.
Analyze what is currently happening around the world to determine where and how the US should respond to events
Take a look at the timeline of genocide and determine what are TWO patterns you see when analyzing the timeline.
Option 7: Cyberspace & Cybersecurity
How has the world been changed as a result of the Internet? How do people use the Internet and access what they need? What is the role of governments globally to protect their citizens and those impacted by cybersecurity?
Option 8: History of Conflict
Curious about the types of conflict that occur? Want to know how countries respond to conflict? This summative will focus on distinguishing the difference between intrastate and interstate conflict before you get to analyze how a resource can cause conflict such as oil or water. The final part connects to the unit as you learn more about the Cold War by exploring a conflict that occurred in a "hot spot".
