Cells

Unit 3: Cell Parts and Processes (click here for the daily schedule)

October 13 - 24, 2008

This short unit takes a quick but intense look at the basic unit of all living things – the cell. After learning how to use a microscope and discussing the diverse types of cells and the history of their discovery, we focus on the structures inside typical plant and animal cells and their individual functions. Although cells compose and surround us, investigating their internal anatomy is like entering a new world! The second week of the unit covers some important cell processes such as diffusion, active transport, osmosis, and mitosis. Although there is much more detail on these topics in high school, I’m amazed by how much they can understand about cells in just 2 weeks.
