Coupla Things v12 (11/9/12)

Post date: Nov 10, 2012 4:8:6 AM

Hey There DCS8

I'll keep this one super short -- promise.

This we messed with phase changes: We started with the construction of a liquid-to-vapor combustion device (an aluminum can alcohol stove). Here is a video that shows the process. By the middle of the week, we moved on to making "fried ice" and doing experiments with a bit of liquid nitrogen. Then, today, the kids began creating test questions and working on increasing the effectiveness of their notes. Starting next week, the kids will be doing daily science demonstrations.

Coming up: Next week marks the end of unit 3 (matter) and the transition into the next one on work, machines, and energy. In preparation for that, please be on the lookout for household items that can be used to demonstrate "simple machines" (levers, wedges, screws, wheel/axle, etc.)

The last item for this week is the (continued) announcement of upcoming trips, including the Age of Sail overnight for all classes. Oh, and if you (students) haven't finished your Fall Experiment Lab Report and embedded it into your site, it is time to take immediate action and make it happen. Don't let fall turn to winter with this thing still hanging over your head.

Special thanks to Thomas for buying & installing shelves in our science storage shed.

Happy weekend and reply if you get a chance... always good to hear from you!

Chris
