Student Fines

Students sometimes fail to return materials that have been loaned to them during the school year. (Shocking, right?) In the case of library books and many text books, this is managed through the library's Destiny circulation system. In order to track additional materials, we can use Destiny to assign fines to students. This way, students will be receiving reminder notices from one central location. Students who fail to comply with these reminders will have letters sent home to parents communicating their outstanding obligations.

If you have students who have failed to turn in district materials (textbooks, formal wear, uniforms, activity fees, sheet music, etc.) and you would like to put them into the Destiny system to hold them accountable, here is how you can do just that.

Getting started with managing fines:

  1. Go to the high school's library system at media.flaschools.org . Click on "Forest Lake High School" link BEFORE you click the "login" link on the upper right corner of the page.

  2. Next, click the "Circulation" tab near the top, and the "Fines" link on the left side.

  3. Type in the last name of the patron, and hit enter or click "Go".

  4. Find the name of the appropriate patron and click on the name-link.

To assign a fine:

Complete steps 1-4 listed above.

Click the "Add Fines" button.

Select the reason for the fine in the pull down menu, and assign an "amount", which should be the cost of the missing item(s). Although our example does not show this, always add "Fine assigned by" and your name so we know who needs to clear the fine in the "Notes" field. Adding additional "Notes" field can help clarify the situation for the student and administration.

To review, edit, or delete a fine:

If a student returns materials, or if you wish to view the details of a specific fine, begin by completing steps 1-4 listed above.

Once you have clicked the patron's name, any outstanding fines will be listed.

To review any details or edit the fine note, click the edit icon (next to the trash icon), and review or edit as necessary.

To edit a fine amount, the fine must be deleted and re-added to the system, unless you wish to merely waive a portion of the fine.

To delete a fine, click the trash icon on the right.

For a student who needs to pay a fine:

Students should pay fines to Wendy Schroeder at the front office. (This ensures that a receipt is given, and money is handled appropriately.) It is easiest for both Wendy and student, if the student can bring a copy of the fine notice when paying a fine. This way, Wendy can mark the notice as paid, and the notice can be presented to the fine's originator as proof of payment.
