Copying Items from Course to Course

In Canvas, copying items from one class to another is called Importing Course Content.

Click this link to follow along with a walk-through video.

Sometimes you want to copy assignments or even entire modules from one class to another, without using the Creative Commons. The following video will walk you through that process, or there are written instructions below the video.

Some things to remember:

  • You must have sufficient rights in both classes to copy from one to another, so if you want to share with a peer, you will need to be at least a course designer to copy to or from a course.

  • You begin in the course you want to copy INTO.

Written Instructions to Copy from Course to Course:

  1. Begin in the course you want to copy Into

  2. From the course home page, click the "Import Existing Content" button on the far right. (see picture to right)

  3. On the screen that comes up you will need to

    1. Set the pull-down to "Copy Canvas Course"

    2. Type in the name of the course, and click on it from the list that pops up.

    3. IMPORTANT: Click the radio button for "Select Specific Content" unless you want to copy the ENTIRE course.

    4. IMPORTANT: Click the box labeled "Adjust events and due dates.

5. When you click the "Adjust events and due dates" the following screen will appear. Click the "Remove Dates" radio button, and the date fields will disappear.

6. Once all of your setting match those below, click the maroon "Import" button.

7. NOTE: This step is only necessary if you are not copying the entire course. Under Current Jobs, you current copy request will appear at the top. Click the maroon "Select Content" button.

8. Selection Options:

    1. The syllabus requires a bit of thinking. If your old course does not have the syllabus from the current template, DO NOT copy it. If your old course uses the current template with the maroon-themed syllabus, copying it will bring over all of your edits from that class.

    2. In order to pick individual items like individual modules or assignments, you must click the right-facing arrow to open the list of options. If you just click the box in front of a category, you will get ALL items from that category. In the example below, I am copying 1 of the 2 quizzes, but all 18 pages.

9. Once you have made your choices of what to copy, click the maroon "Select Content" button and wait for the magic to happen.

10. Look for any errors posted after the copy has completed. Errors will alert you to items that may not have copied or to broken links.
