Adding Images

Adding images to your website can offer parents and students a richer and more meaningful experience, but there are several things that you should consider before you add images to your site:

1) Remember Copyright Law:

Images that were created by someone other than you are protected by copyright, even if they do not expressly say so. Before you post any image on your website (that the entire world can see), be sure that you have permission from the image's creator, and that you site the image accordingly.

2) Consider the size of the Image before you insert it:

Google only provides a limited amount of space for use on your website, and images are often very large in size. Before you post an image to your website, consider reducing the size of the image to something fairly small, in most cases, an image of 30 to 300KB is more than adequate.

3) Insert the Image into the Web Page:

  • Make sure that your web page is in "edit" mode by clicking the "Edit Page" button at the top.

  • Place your cursor where you want the image to be located.

  • In the Google sites menu bar, click on "Insert" and select "image" from the drop down menu.

    • Click the "Choose File" button and locate the image you wish to use. (Be sure you have considered the image's size, and noted above.) Click on the image to highlight it, and then click the "open" button to upload your image to the web.

    • Make sure that your image is highlighted (it will have a light yellow square around it) and click OK.

Once your picture is inserted into your webpage, you can bring up a menu of options (like the one shown below) by clicking on it.

    • These options allow you to decide if you want to use a different size of the image, where the image is located (left, right, or centered), and whether you want to allow text to "wrap" around it.
