Recording Audio & Video

Using Audio & Video:

With Canvas, it is easy to record video and/or audio right within the applications.

Audio and video are great to use for:

  • Giving instructions to students

  • Giving feedback to students

  • Having students provide performance evidence

    • speeches

    • world language exercises

    • musical performance

    • make-up activity or work from home

Recording Comments:

With Canvas, it is easy to add recorded comments. There are 3 buttons below the comment box. The paperclip allows you to attach a comment document, the video symbol allows you to record audio or video, and the speaker icon does speech recognition (you talk, and the computer types out your comments). Cool, right?

Recording Video:

Any time you use the text editor in Canvas, you can insert video. Just click the "Record/Upload Media" button.

This will bring up a recording window like the one below (provided your computer/device has a camera and microphone).

If you only want to record audio, simple click the "Webcam" button and select "No Video" before you begin recording.

Once you click on the "Start Recording" button, you get a 3-second count down. Record your video, and click the "Finish" button to stop recording.

You can watch your video (blue button) and then re-record or save. Be sure to name your video.

Using Phones:

  • IMPORTANT: Have students install and use the Canvas Student App.

  • Using the app, they can record audio and video directly into Canvas

  • Students who DO NOT use the app may upload files which you then have to download to watch - ICK!

  • Encourage students to record in landscape (horizontal) as this is native to Canvas. Vertical recordings show up with black bars on the left and right.

Audio/Video Assignments:

If you wish to require an audio or video submission from a student, create a new assignment as usual, and under Submission Type, select "Online" and then check the "Media Recordings" check box.

  4. Record the video/audio.

  5. Click "Finish".

  6. Give the file a name and "Save"

  7. Click "Submit Assignment" (again) to finalize the submission
