Concluding Courses

There are two ways to conclude a course

  • hard conclude - moves course to "Prior Enrollment" for all users, this is the preferred way to conclude

  • soft conclude - closes access to students but there are still a few ways for students to access course unless done correctly

All concluded courses remain available for you to copy materials from after either a Hard or Soft Conclusion.

HARD CONCLUDE

When you are absolutely certain that you are done with a course, you can "conclude the course" to make it inactive. Concluded courses are no longer editable by teachers or students, although teachers can still copy assignments/modules/quizzes/etc. and access student grades from a concluded course.

You should likely Hard Conclude a course if:

  • It has been at least a month since students have been active in the course. (The start of a new school year is often a good time to conclude last year's courses.)

  • None of your students will be making up outstanding work. (Don't conclude a course where students are making up work, such as students with an incomplete.)

To conclude a course, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the course you wish to conclude. (You may need to use the "Courses" tab and scroll down to "All Courses" if you have hidden the course from view.)

  2. Scroll down and click on "Settings".

  3. On the right-hand side of the page, click the "Conclude this Course" button

  4. NOTE: If the "Conclude the Course" button is not available, you will need to follow the instructions for a "Soft Conclude" shown below.

Courses can be "unconluded" but students will no longer be enrolled. If you need students enrolled, this must be done on a student by student basis.

SOFT CONCLUDE

Use this conclusion method if you think for some reason you may need to reopen the course or if the course will not allow for a "hard conclude". Courses concluded in this fashion may be Hard Concluded in the future if this is an option.

  1. Open the course you wish to conclude. (You may need to use the "Courses" tab and scroll down to "All Courses" if you have hidden the course from view.)

  2. Scroll down and click on "Settings".

    1. Look in the middle of the settings and find the "End"

  3. Enter a date that is appropriate

  4. IMPORTANT: Check the box labeled either

    1. Students can only participate in the course between these dates (will not let students access before "Start" or after "End)

    2. Restrict students from viewing this course after end dates (does not restrict access before "Start" date)
