Create New Course

Starting a New Course

Important: Whenever possible, you should use the courses that have been created for you in Canvas by the district. If you have multiple courses that you intend to cross-list together, all you need to do is pick one to designate as your "parent" class. You can apply the template onto this "parent" course as well as copy materials in from previous courses.

Step-by-Step for Applying the Template

  1. Open Canvas

  2. Click the "Commons" Icon on the left-hand side

  3. Search for "Forest Lake High School"

  4. Click the title of the template "Forest Lake Area High School 2020 Template" (Look for the Gold FL)

  5. Click the blue "Import/Download" button

  6. Click the checkbox next to the course you wish to update and then click the blue "Import into Course" button.

  7. You will see a green banner that says "You have successfully started the import!"

  8. The import process can take a very little time to several hours depending on the size of items involved in the import. For the high school template, most imports will take several minutes.

  9. Be sure to rename your course as well.

Manually Creating a Course

You should only manually create a course if:

  • you want a course to use with an activity, club, or team (non-grade bearing)

  • You need to create course content for a course that has not been created by the district. (Typically, this would be for summer content creation.)

Instructions for manually creating a course:

  1. Open Canvas

  2. Open the Dashboard

  3. Click "Start a New Course" button on right hand side of screen

  4. On the "Start New Course" page:

    1. Name your Course - Use something that will be clear to students

    2. Set the content license to "Private (Copyrighted)"

    3. Uncheck the "Make course publicly visible" box

    4. Click "Create Course"
