Notes 13/04/21 Today, we did Zebra's Toothpaste which was a very interesting experiment and quite fun to conduct. We also did Elephants Toothpaste which was similar to Zebra's Toothpaste except it was significantly faster and there was a lot more of it. As well as that we did Hydrogen Balloons where we filled a balloon with Hydrogen and then lit it on fire. Lastly, we did Big Bertha where we squirted some methylated spirits in a large plastic bottle and then put a flame over the bottle causing it to combust. There was an acoustic test going on during today's experiments so we would have to wait for 30 seconds every now and again.
Notes 04/05/21 Today, I did Flaming Colours and Elephants Toothpaste. Flaming Colours involves lighting steel string on fire by dipping them in methylated spirits before lighting them on fire. by using different types of powdery solids we were able to change the colour of the flame.
Notes 18/05.21 Today, I watched and helped (microscopically) a group trying to make elephants toothpaste glow a bright neon colour using light sticks. We were unsuccessful, unfortunately. Later on, Mr Gilbert and other students attempted to create a massive version of elephants toothpaste. The first two attempts failed as it didn't really shoot up, but the third one ended up going quite well.
Notes 27/07/21 Today, I attempted to create a methylated spirit powered monorail of sorts. At first, I used two plastic bottles and tried to light them at the same time by taping a popsicle stick to the two bottles. Unfortunately, when it was lit the tap as well as one of the bottles started to melt.
