Welcome to 2020, the absolute shitshow that is the start of the new decade.
Goodluck.
So the buskers are working on a lab safety video this term.
Gonna be the most chaotic video in the history of videos but oh well.
The video is to be presented to Yr 9's at the start of the year as a bit of a guide to the labs.
Key Points:
Gear
Procedures
Emergencies
Spam all the celebrities so they feature in the video.
Entertaining.
I did find the oxygen weed its in the Kawarau. (whilst on kayaking trip for 7OED) Just a crap tonne of it everywhere which is worryingly close to the lake.
Another crazy last minute idea is the Lake Invaders Video competition which I will talk to the buskers about this week. A 3 minute long video about weeds and the prizes are cash and a go pro so yeet.
What is lagarosiphon and how is it affecting our lakes?
What can we do to help protect our lakes from lagarosiphon and other freshwater pests?
If you were a lake manager for the day – what would you do?
Will be judged on:
Ability to tell a story in an informative and entertaining way
Educational value and use of correct facts
Original artistic flair and innovation
Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winning entries:
1st = $500 and GoPro camera
2nd = $300
3rd = $150
Yeah I am an idiot however, I did manage to get james's go pro so Y e E t
I played with some elephants toothpaste but it didn't work particularly well due to some old hydrogen peroxide.
So its been a chaotic few weeks, corona virus is shutting life down...I gave up on the lake weed video project due to the stress of the time limit, and it being really embarrassing to edit myself, however here is another attempt at breaking the go pro.
Note: we need a go pro for buskers. Lmao.
Due to Covid 19 School was deleted towards the end of march, so not much progress was made. Projects that we were keen on were:
LUMA 2020 (which is a festival so it will probably be cancelled)
Safety Video (which we should just do)
Teaching others the core hot stuff experiments.
I also am trying to keep active on the buskers instagram account so that we keep followers, and on tuesday nights I might work on finishing the blooper videos from the hot stuff footage.
Theres this video i saw and like they had some interesting experiments.

We finally got back into Buskers with a few challenges. I was in a group with a bunch of new buskers whose names I don't know.
We did the satellite challenge where we had a balloon, tape and 6 sheets of paper and we needed to create a satellite that would release from the balloon at the highest point possible. It went absolutely shit. We could not get the balloon to go straight, it kept flying into the floor. We did get the detaching harness/mechanism right.
The second task was to create a harness for an egg that allowed it to travel safely down a zipline at the fastest speed possible. Me and Edwen had a time of 6.5 seconds. Our model was pretty great. I believe if the safety pin had not broken then it would have been successful on the steep ramp. The egg broke when the harness fell off the wire at the end. 2.5 seconds.
Week 2:
At the end of last term we split into groups and planned an experiment to show to primary schoolers. Isaac, Elia and I decided we would work with oobleck because Health and Safety.
This week we made a container of it to test (with the ratio of cornstarch to water being 2:1). Isaac punched it for fun. Isaac had done some research on oobleck and found a video about "dancing oobleck" on a speaker. So we put some oobleck on a speaker to make it dance. It would be cool to try on a bigger speaker.
I need to bring the go pro to get some decent footage of it.
I also plan to bring in a massive tub and make a shitload of oobleck so that we can run on it.
WEek 3?
This week Ben and Sam showed up randomly to distract us from actual science. Isaac, Elias and I made some more oobleck. I brought the gopro so that I could get some footage of the oobleck on the speaker at 240 fps . However I have to now edit it in order to get the footage to show in slow mo. (Bc the computer can't process it.)
Everyone else was making slime.
Week 5, I was sick last week lmao.
We stuck oobleck in a balloon. Wow. Very productive. I still haven't processed the footage from week 3. Need to use the special computers up in media studies. Aaaah.
Week 6
Jack brought in an amp for the giant speakers so we played around with that.
It was a little disappointing because they weren't that much better than the small ones, just louder.
Make sure to use glad wrap and tape it tight to the speaker bed for best results. Liquidy oobleck is best.
Week 8
So we started off strong, I ran through the key concepts of the Oobleck experiment and basically used Isaac as a test dummy for the theory, which worked OK. Ben kinda had to help with the explanation because clearly, I had forgotten exactly how little primary schoolers know.
After that I helped with the fluorescent elephant's toothpaste, which didn't work. Then Mrs Quaid asked me to run Burning Hands, and the Fire Tornado, which both being highly dangerous, went extremely well.
I brought the go pro with me, hence the footage and photos.
Week 1:
We wrote Haikus. Such Productivity. Much Art, Very Creativity.
"Big Bertha go whoosh
Health and Safety hate this group
Haha, flame go green!"
So yeah. We also started a group twitter account. This can only end well. @WHS_go_boom
Pretty much all we have been doing is finishing the Junior Roadshow, so me & ben have been "critiquing" and offering feedback.
So we haven't really done much this whole time.
Week 3 Term 2: Ben decided to screw around and light elephants toothpaste on fire like the huge brain person he is. Obviously I helped.
Trails: 1 part KI: 4 parts Hydrogen Peroxide: 1 part Methylated Spirits.
#1 50mls? Ben did not measure anything but it went everywhere. 20% Hydrogen Peroxide.
#2 12mls. 1:4:1 Exploded. Hit the ceiling. 20% Hydrogen Peroxide.
#3 14mls 1:4:2 Ok? - 10% Hydrogen Peroxide.
#4 14mls 1:4:2 Boring. 5% Hydrogen Peroxide.
#5 14mls 1:4:2 Better. 7.5% Hydrogen Peroxide.
#6 14mls 1:4:2 !pop! - 7.5% Hydrogen Peroxide. Repeat 2.
#7 14mls 1:4:2 !pop! - 7.5% Hydrogen Peroxide. Repeat 3.
Final Measurements and Notes:
2ml KI
4ml Methylated Spirits
8ml H202 7.5%
in a 10ml beaker.
