Today we made elephant toothpaste as a starter experiment. After that we tried different stuff with soap and bubbles. It was a lot of fun.
Today I was at science buskers for the first time. All the new kids went into the lab. I was one of them. So we talked about buskers, what busking is and what we wanted to do to start. We agreed on doing elephant toothpaste. I just had the opportunity to watch somebody doing elephant toothpaste but I could never do it myself. I am nervous when it comes to heat. And elephant toothpaste gets VERY hot.
When you want to do elephant toothpaste you put a little dish washing liquid into a test tube (ad food-coloring if you prefer color to white). Do not ad too much, that was my mistake. It just came up very slowly.
After you have these two ingredients in a test tube add two pipettes full of Potassium Iodide (At least if you do a little toothpaste. Big ones need more) . Potassium Iodide is a catalyst which meas it speeds up reactions.
Now, finally we add some Hydrogen Peroxide 20%. Make sure it is cold until you need it because the Oxygen gas might come out when it gets to warm. Enjoy the toothpaste...
Hydrogen Peroxide is made out of two Hydrogen and two Oxygen. In other words, water with extra air. Because the one extra Oxygen slowly damps out of the water it has to be stored cold. Well in elephant toothpaste you practically just speed up the reaction with the catalyst and trap the Oxygen in dish washing liquid. That's the bubbly part of it.
BE CAREFUL! ELEPHANT TOOTHPASTE CAN GET MORE THAN 200 DEGREES WARM.
