Dizziest Set in the Hall

Best Set in the Hall is already quite a clockwise dance. But some people I danced with recently put in extra twirls. Here is a version with all the twirls.

DIZZIEST SET IN THE HALL (J8x32) 3C (4C set) E McIntosh with apologies to H Greenwood

1-8   1s set & 1L followed by partner casts (1M turns single RSh going across the set to match the cast) below 3s. 1L crosses (turning single RSh) & casts up and turns single RSh to face her 1st corner while 1M dances up the middle (turning single RSh 1&1/4) to face 1st corner. 2s step up on 7-8, with a complete turn towards the top of the set.

9-12    1s set to 1st corners & dance RSh round each other into 3rd corner (pstn) while 1st corners dance in, turning single RSh 1&1/2 about to face their original position

13-16    1s+1st crnr person set & 1st crnr persons dance RSh round each other into diag opp crnrs while 1s dance in & pivot to right (1&3/4) to face 2nd crnrs

17-24  1s repeat bars 9-16 with 2nd corners & end passing RSh, turning single RSh as they pass (feels like a Hole in the Wall cross or the star of A Trip to Paris) to 2nd place opposite sides. (3)(1)(2)

25-32  2s+1s+3s chase clockwise 1/2 way & turn partners RH most of the way, pull RSh back to cast out to sidelines.

CITY RIGHTS (J8x32) 3C (4C set) E McIntosh with apologies to Nicola Scott

1- 8 1s turn RH, cast (2s step up), turn *RH* once and a bit to face 1st corners

9-12 Corners Pass and Allemande Turn:

1s loop round corner position as in Corners Pass & Turn while corners dance in, briefly join RH for raven to dance under, and return to place (feels like CP&T for raven, adv & ret for lark)

13-16 1s in centre turn *RH* once and a bit to face 2nd corner positions while corners chase clockwise half way round

17-24 Repeat 9-16 with 2nd corner positions, with 1s turning *RH* once and a bit to end in the centre LSh to LSh facing opposite sides

25-32 Raven with 2s and lark with 3s dance RH across; all turn partners RH (or birl) 213

Olga McIntosh found a dance with a local connection: https://my.strathspey.org/dd/dance/9682/ Leasowe Castle is at the coast end of the Wirral. IT HAS GLIDE SYMMETRY! This is the transformation that maps a right footprint onto a left footprint (reflect in mirror line and slide forwards along it) and is much less common in SCD than parallel, mirror or anti-parallel reels.

JUST FOOTPRINTS (J8x32) 3C (4C set) E McIntosh after Romaine Butterfield

1-8 1s dance in and long cast to 2nd place, half figure of eight to own left. This is recycling.

9-16 1s advance and Allemande turn (feels like adv & ret for the lark, 1s’ loop from corners pass & turn for raven) to end with raven facing out. Raven cast up, followed by lark, and dance down the middle to end between the 3s, lark between the 2s.

17-24 Raven RSh to 3rd lark, Lark LSh to 2nd raven, reel of 3 across. This is glide symmetry, like footprints.

25-32 Raven in the lead again, cast right and cross to own side. 1s turn RH.

Repeat anticlockwise from 2nd place: half figures of eight go right, *lark* turns under *L* arm in the Allemande turn and leads the chases to the left (still casting up and dancing down the middle), leading lark gives LSh and raven RSh to start the reels, ending their go with a LH turn.
