"Systematic literature reviews are a sophisticated and rigorous form of research that helps to generate new knowledge about the topic reviewed (Torraco, 2005). As a research genre, the systematic literature review first appeared in the medical field, where its goal was to synthesize previous research in a transparent and reproducible way. This research genre has been adopted by many disciplines, some of which kept the positivist approach of the medical field, whereas others adapted the method to be less quantitative and aggregative, but rather more qualitative, narrative, and interpretivist (Ramey & Rao, 2011a)."
