DISCUSSION
Generosity is the virtue of giving good things to others freely and abundantly. It is not how much you give or even how expensive the item is. True generosity is giving from the heart.
Natural disasters strike at different times and places in the world. Floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can occur without warning or when people least expect them. When such calamities strike, immediate response and action is needed to save lives. There is a need to extend assistance to the communities and families that are severely affected by such crises. The Children’s Joy Foundation, Incorporated, whose responsibility and advocacy is to extend help to victims of calamities and disasters is appealing to individuals, corporate organizations, and social development institutions to extend help for food, clothing, and medicines in material or financial form to families and relatives of its beneficiaries and other flood victims.
Besides the victims of calamities, there are a lot of people in our society who are in need of other things such as love, help, care, compassion, and other assistance. Different civic and private organizations join their hands together to sponsor a gathering that will give a once-in-a-lifetime experience of joy to the needy, victims of calamities, and less fortunate ones. The primary goals of this humanitarian action group are to save lives, alleviate suffering, and allow the victims to retain their dignity during and after undergoing all kinds of crises.
This is a celebration of generosity. It is an experience that brings generous givers together from different places. This is to consider and be reminded of what it means to be entrusted with the gift of wealth. One reason also is to contemplate on ways to have a wonderful and different experience on the joy of generosity and excel even more in the grace of giving.
They distributed an invitation to the following people:
1. Elderly people
2. Street children in the community
3. Homeless people
4. Street vendors, sweepers, and garbage collectors
5. Differently-abled people
6. Needy and victims of calamities
Generosity refers to giving various things like resources, possession, time, talent, kind attention, aid, and giving of encouragement to others. Being generous is giving to others anything that is good to them abundantly. It has the intention to enhance the true well-being of a person. Like all the other virtues, generosity needs the person’s genuine self-interest to learn and practice.
VOCABULARY
enhance – improve
Prayer for the goodness and benefit of others is a very important form of generosity. The stronger and deeper the prayer, the more it can help.
Generosity lies in the simple giving and sharing of our time and attention to others.
To live generously one must use his or her:
1. God-given ability to help those in need;
2. Time, money, and talent to serve others; and
3. Hospitality and kindness at all times.
There are people who have a lot of material resources to be shared to others. Some have extra time to serve others and most of all, some have a big heart to serve those in need. Everyone has unique talents that can benefit people. No matter what the gift is, sharing oneself to others is the most important gift.
The three main aspects of giving generously are the three T’s—time, talent, and treasure.
1. Time – You can give away and be generous with your time to help someone who needs you by using or spending it in the service of other people.
2. Talent – Share your talent in singing, acting, or dancing by performing for free in front of the people who are lonely or away from their loved ones.
Example: There are some people performing in the home for the aged, orphanage, or home for differently-abled persons.
3. Treasures such as money and resources
a. Share your extra money or resources to others by buying rice and basic needs for the victims of calamities.
b. Donate your extra allowance to the church.
c. Share your toys to children who have nothing to play with.
To put generosity into action, the person has to find out if there is something that blocks the flow of God’s work in him or her.
