DISCUSSION
Honesty is to speak and act truthfully and at the same time perform different tasks with integrity. It is to stand up for what a person believes is right. Sincerity is the virtue of a person who speaks and acts sincerely about his or her own feelings, thoughts, and desires.
Read and analyze the short story about the Grade 4 pupil, who is the best speller. Find out how she realized the importance of honesty and peace of mind at the end of the day.
Everyone knew in their Grade 4 class that Charmie was recognized as the best speller. She could spell difficult and challenging words like “wrestle,” “occasion,” and “continuous” very easily. She used to get perfect scores every time they have weekly spelling test. Ms. Rina, her English teacher, made a rule in their spelling tests that any pupil who does not get at least 75% correct spelling would have to write each word 10 times for next week's spelling quiz. Lynn,
Charmie’s best friend who sat next to her always struggled in spelling. Last Friday, she received 70 percent which meant writing each word ten times. Charmie was too confident in her spelling abilities that she felt and decided not to study for her next spelling quiz. The test began. Ms. Rina pronounced each word clearly and then repeated it. Everything went well until she spoke “conscience.” Charmie scribbled c-o-n-s-i-e-n- c-e... Now what? c? i?... or ...e? Her mind was blank.
Ms. Rina started to move on to the next word. It occurred to Charmie that Lynn knew how to spell it! Lynn had written this word 10 times before.
There was open space between Charmie and Lynn. Charmie's eyes rolled to the right. There it was, spelled out in Lynn's handwriting. Her eyes went quickly back to her own paper and finished the word with the letters “c-i-e-n-c-e”.
Charmie remained tense and nervous as Ms. Rina read the last spelling word. She had cheated for the first time in her life. She thought, “Is this the way I want to keep my perfect and honest record—by being dishonest and a cheater?”
Finally, she erased what she had written earlier and replaced it with what she knew was the wrong answer. She wrote “s-i-e-n-c-e”. As her sweaty hands released the pencil, and as she passed the test to the front, she sighed with relief. She thought, “So, what if my perfect scores are no longer intact? At least I am honest and sincere in doing what is right.”
