LESSON OBJECTIVES
Explain the influence of the Philippine climate to its flora and fauna
SUCCESS CRITERIA
The learners are able to differentiate and give definition of the Philippines' flora and fauna.
DISCUSSION
The Philippines is a tropical country with wet and dry seasons. It experiences high level of humidity because of the vast bodies of water surrounding it and its direct exposure to the sun. This kind of climate provided the country with rich and diverse flora and fauna.
Marine Fauna
Philippines is surrounded by bodies of water. It has rich and varied marine fauna. One won’t be surprised if one discovers the natural beauty under these bodies of water. There are a variety of animals, shells, corals, and plants in them.
There are 2,000 species of fish of varying kinds, such as bariles, butanding, lapu-lapu, talakitok, and many more. One of the world’s smallest fish, the 4-mm tabios or sinarapan, can be found in Lake Buhi, Camarines Sur.
Exquisite shells are also in these waters, such as Tridacna gigas, the largest shell; and pisidium, the smallest shell. The exotic Conus gloriamaris is found in the Philippine seas, too.
The “Pearl of Allah,” the largest natural pearl in the world, is found in the country as well as the pawikan or green sea turtles in the Turtle Islands in Sulu.
These beautiful water resources are reasons why tourists, both local and foreign, are attracted to visit these places in the Philippines.
Filipinos have to take steps to conserve the country’s resources, may it be land or water, for a better future of the entire Philippines.
