DISCUSSION
Rice is considered as a staple food for Filipinos. Here is a story on how a mother teaches her children how to be “rice-ponsible.” Read and share it with the class.
Be “Rice-ponsible”
“It’s lunch time! Come on, children, stop playing with your gadgets. It’s time to eat,” Mother announced.
Ten-year-old Genesis and four-year-old Jireh obeyed Mother and went to the dining table. They said their grace and began eating. “Mom, I don’t like this rice. This is brown colored and too hard. I prefer the white rice you used to buy,” Genesis complained.
Jireh accidentally dropped his spoon and the rice fell to the floor.
“Children, do not complain about what kind of rice we are eating now. Be thankful that we just buy it from the store and cook it for consumption. You know what, the Ifugao had to work hard to create the Banaue Rice Terraces. They carved the mountains for several years. And before this rice reaches our plates, the Ifugao and other farmers labored under the sun for three to four months from planting to harvesting. Now, Genesis, eat your food. Jireh, get another spoon. Both of you, be “rice-ponsible”. Be sure you do not drop any rice grain from your plate. Do you understand me?” Mother said. “Yes, Mother,” they said meekly and continued eating.
What are the famous landmarks contributed by the cultural communities?
The Philippines is a beautiful country with famous landmarks across its different regions. Many of these landmarks have become tourist destinations that are mostly visited by local and foreign tourists every year. But do you know that cultural communities have played significant roles in making these landmarks popular?
Banaue Rice Terraces
The Banaue Rice Terraces in the Cordillera Administrative Region is associated with the Ifugao people. The ancient Ifugao created this famous landmark more than 2,000 years ago. This is located in several villages and is collectively known as Banaue Rice Terraces.
Various sections of the terraces were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was described as “living cultural landscape of unparalleled beauty.”
Boracay Island
The entire island of the famous Boracay in Aklan province was once the original home of the cultural community of the Atis long before the Philippine colonization of the Spaniards. The Atis had been slowly displaced after tourism boomed in Boraca Island. Restaurants, hotels, and other business establishments grew in number to welcome the arrival of many tourists. Only two hectares of the island was left for the Atis to live on.
Today, however, the Atis were granted a total of 274 hectares in the towns of Buruanga, Tangalan, and Malay in Aklan province and 3.2 hectares of land in Boracay by the Duterte administration. This was done after the six months rehabilitation of the island which was completed in October 2018.
T’boli Grand Monument
The T’boli grand monument is located at the municipal park of the Municipality of T’boli, South Cotabato.
This ₱20 million-worth monument was designed by the famous national artist Kublai Millan. It was initiated by the municipal local government to showcase the unique cultural heritage of the T’boli people. The monument has a tower depicting the T’boli musical instrument. Surrounding it are groups of T’boli people holding other indigenous musical instruments and wearing their traditional t’nalak attire.

What elements and principles of art are present in the famous landmarks of the cultural communities?
The elements and principles of color, space, and proportion can be observed in the famous landmarks of the cultural communities.
1. Color
The T’boli grand monument uses a combination of bright colors although it is dominantly brown colored. The Banaue rice terraces is dominantly green as it highlights rice plantation.
2. Space
The Ati children playing in Boracay shores show the wide open space of the actual area. Likewise, the landscape photos of the famous landmarks are shown in a way to signify wide area.
3. Proportion
Notice that in the photo of Ati children in Boracay shores, the seashore has a bigger proportion than the sea to show the location of the children. Meanwhile, the T’boli grand monument is located at the center of the picture to show its significance in the proportion of the picture.
How are the famous landmarks of the cultural communities painted?
Painting of the famous landmarks of the cultural communities follow the same painting steps as discussed in the previous lesson. The difference is that these landmarks occupy wide spaces so it is best to paint them in a landscape or horizontal view instead of the portrait view.
