What is a mural painting?
A mural refers to a piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling, or other permanent structure. In mural painting, the architectural elements of a given space are harmoniously incorporated nto the picture.
Mural painting is one of the oldest forms of painting which has been handed down across generation.
Nowadays, mural paintings have been used not just as an art expression but also as an advocacy to express views on socio-political issues.
What are the different methods of mural painting?
There are different methods and techniques that can be applied in mural painting. The most common are the following:
• Fresco painting. It refers to the application of fresh paint on the wall or ceiling.
• Tempera painting. This refers to the method of binding the paint pigments with an aluminous medium like egg white or egg yolk diluted in water.
• Oil painting. This pertains to the application of oil colors in a huge medium inside a studio then transporting and attaching it to the wall of the desired destination.
How do you paint a mural?
1. Plan the project details.
2. Make a small version of the finished mural.
3. Prepare the wall by cleaning it with soap and water to remove mold, oil, grease, wax, cracks, and other moisture or structural damage. Make a scaffolding to reach elevated area of the wall.
4. Apply primer or white paint. Let it dry.
5. Paint the wall.
How are digital murals created?
Digital technology is now used to create murals on walls and surfaces.
Many business establishments use the digital technique to advertise their products or services. A wallscape pertains to the huge advertisements attached or advertised outside the wall of a building. It can be painted directly to the wall or printed digitally on a vinyl or tarpaulin, and securely attached to the wall. While large-scale prints are not strictly classifi ed as murals, large poster billboards are often referred to as such.
What elements and principles of art are present in mural painting?
Mural painting uses different elements and principles of art like colors, space, and motifs.
1. Colors
Mural paints often use a combination of bright colors to easily attract attention even to those who are just passing by.
2. Space
Mural paints occupy large spaces like walls, ceilings, and others. These can be easily seen even if the viewer is several meters away from the painting.
3. Motifs
Mural paints are often done with a particular motif like peace, education, and related ones.
