B. Read the poem below.
Before sleeping I daydream
About many things inside my head
That I’m in a plane flying
Even though I’m in my bed
I imagine I am swimming
Under the deep blue Philippine Sea
Dancing in the water with dolphins
Feeling wonderful and free
I imagine I am climbing
Up the breathtaking Mount Pulag
Almost touching the clouds
And see a view with no price tag
I imagine I am taking a walk
On the beautiful streets of Vigan
Transported back in time
Its beauty compared to none
These thoughts lull me to sleep
As I snuggle under the sheets
Happy thoughts on my mind
Give me a good night’s sleep
Our imagination can take us anywhere. There is no harm in dreaming of something we want to do or accomplish. We just need to work hard and take steps to achieving our dreams.
Did you notice the underlined phrases in the poem above? Read on to learn more about prepositions and prepositional phrases.
Prepositions are words used before nouns or pronouns to give additional information in a sentence.
Prepositions are used to show when something happens (prepositions of time), where something happens (prepositions of place), or where something is
going (prepositions of direction).
Example:
Jack was in the field at ten o’clock yesterday morning.
(shows time)
He lives on Rivera Street. (shows place)
Francis and Rico’s kite area was toward the top of the
hill. (shows direction)
There are what we call simple and compound prepositions.
*Simple prepositions are “small” words that show relationships like those showing relationships with time, space, and degree. Some examples of simple prepositions are on, at, in, over, under, of, for, about, to, and others.
*Compound prepositions are formed by prefixing a preposition to a noun, adjective, or adverb. Some examples of compound prepositions are inside, outside, within, without, into, between, below, etc.
Below is a chart of different prepositions and what they are generally used for.
Examples:
Do you see how each preposition is used in the sentences? Only the prepositions were changed in each sentence and yet the idea of one sentence is different from the others. That’s how important the correct usage of each preposition is.
