DISCUSSION
Empathy is being aware or being conscious of someone’s condition in life. When a person is willing and able to put someone’s feelings and needs over his or her own, he or she is empathizing with others.
1. Regret – This is a statement that caused hurt or damage toward the other person. Having empathy for the person you hurt is important in an apology. If the apology is sincere, the other person will feel it.
Example: I am deeply sorry for what I have done.
2. Responsibility – This is a statement that means not blaming any other person for what you did but accepting full responsibility and the consequences that go with it. For an apology to be effective, it must be clear.
Example: I am sorry. I know I hurt you and there is no excuse for my bad behavior.
3. Remedy – This is the statement where you cannot go back and undo what you have done, but you have the power to repair the damage you have made. A meaningful apology is needed by offering to help the person or by making a promise not to repeat the same mistake.
Example: Teacher, I am sorry for not telling the truth. I promise I will not do it again.
