How did you fare in the activity? Were you able to answer all of the items correctly?
We only have one Earth, one planet we live in. Earth is our home. Many beautiful forests, animals, and bodies of water are found here. These natural resources provide us humans with everything we need. What do you notice about the underlined phrases?
You have already learned about singular and plural forms of nouns. When you use these nouns with verbs, you must make sure that these nouns “agree” with the verbs you use. Nouns and verbs must agree with each other in number (singular or plural). If the noun is singular, its verb must also be singular (ends with an -s or -es), and if the noun is plural, its verb must also be plural (base form of the verb).
This noun-verb agreement happens in the present tense. Look at the examples that follow.
The zookeeper watches over the animals.
Which is the subject? Is the subject singular or plural?
Which is the verb?
The zookeepers watch over the animals.
Look at the difference between the two sentences.
It is important to identify the noun that the verb is referring to. For example, the sentence reads:
The zookeeper with a hat watches over the animals.
You may get confused since there are two nouns before the verb: zookeeper and hat. Who is watching over the animals, the zookeeper or the hat? The zookeeper is still the noun that the verb must agree with.
