DISCUSSION
Starting off the class with an by pair activity, and will give them 15 minutes to brainstorm. Right after the activity, the teacher will proceed with the discussion proper.
Have you gone to a grocery to buy things? How are the different products arranged? Choosing products and knowing where to get them are made easy because of how they are classified. Study the materials shown in the picture. How will you group them?
Aside from the arrangement of the materials, you may have also observed that there are pieces of information on the packaging. They are either printed directly on the containers or on papers that are attached to the containers. We call this information that we can see on one part of the products as product label.
You can see product labels in almost all products. You see them on the containers of the cleaning materials you use at home. You also see them on the packaging of food items that you eat. They are on the containers of the medicine and beauty products that you use, as well. Why do you think manufacturers of these products put labels on their products? Why are these labels important to consumers?
Many different products for a particular use are displayed in the supermarkets or grocery stores that you sometimes get confused on what to buy. What do you do before buying a product? Do you consider reading its product label first? What are found in the product label?
Importance of Product Labels
Different products have different information on their labels. What is this label for? The identity of a product is determined by its label. It can often distinguish this product from another. This explains why product owners or manufacturers spend a lot of resources in label designs to make them attractive to buyers. However, product labels should not only serve to capture the attention of buyers. They should also provide buyers with important information regarding the product. Labels can be attractive. So, what should be the elements of a good product label? A product label
provides customers with information to help them in their decision to buy or to help them get the best out of using the product. What are some of the labels you have seen on the products you have inspected?
Can you see the differences on how products are labeled? Since different materials have different characteristics, they are labeled according to their value and uses. Three pieces of information on product labels that consumers should give importance to are the dates of manufacture and expiration, the warnings or precautions on the use, and storage instruction. The warnings are usually presented using different icons. The expiry date tells until when the product is safe and still effective to use. For food items, the “BEST BEFORE DATE” is necessary.
Food product labels play a very important role in deciding what food to eat. Foods give the body nutrients needed to keep it healthy. Healthful foods have ingredients with needed nutritional value. Nutritional facts on food product labels are often color-coded.
Before buying any food products, consider the kind and amount of nutrients that they contain for a healthy body. Moreover, avoid products that contain ingredients that are bad for your health.
Aside from the food we eat, labels are also important in other products like common household materials. These products are not always beneficial to us, they can be harmful to us, too. These kinds of household products contain hazardous substances that are harmful to plants, animals, humans, and environment.
Household products that are harmful should be handled, used, and stored properly. Refer to image on the right for the necessary precautions on the use of some harmful household products. Giving importance on the understanding of these product labels will help consumers in using the products properly and safely. Different from foods and household products, medicine products should be given extra attention with regard to labels. In buying medicines with prescriptions over the counter, it is very crucial that information about the medicines is considered. It can tell how to administer the medicines to patients to get the best result. It should always provide information about storage instructions and expiration date.
What to Remember When Reading Product Labels
There are so many kinds of product labels out there that we read and see every day. This ensures safety for the consumers, that is, not to cause harm and cause serious problems.
1. Always read the product label. Know the components of the product. It is a good practice to check the label for harmful components especially if you are allergic to something.
2. Do not rely only on what you know or what you used to do in using the product. Choose products with clear directions on what to do when using them.
3. Consider correct amount or dosages for medicines and specific instructions in using the product. The “how-to” label helps you figure out what to do and how to use it. The instructions label is one of the most useful parts in product labels.
4. Never ignore the warning signs. Possible side effects may occur or may be experienced. Warning signs make consumers feel safer, especially if they know what they are using. This is important as it may also save consumer’s life.
A. What To Do When Storing
1. Follow label directions in storing products. Products with the same uses should be placed together.
2. Store products properly. houcleansers should be stored in the kitchen cabinet below the sink. Food products should be stored in the cabinet above the sink or an area away from heat and household cleansers. Cosmetics should be placed in the bedroom cabinet. Hazardous products like pesticides, insecticides, paints, and thinners should be stored on high shelves or in locked cabinets or a stockroom outside the house and out of reach of children. Do not store hazardous products in the same area with food.
3. Leave the product stored in its original container with the original label attached. Make sure lids and caps of containers are tightly sealed.
4. Store incompatible products separately. Keep flammable products away from corrosive products and hazardous products away from food. Never store hazardous products along with food or beverage containers.

Rags used with flammable products, such as furniture stripper and paint remover should be sealed in marked container.
B. What To Do When Disposing of
1. Never dispose of hazardous household product; instead, use it up or give it to garbage collection expert. If you must dispose of a hazardous household product, read the product label carefully and follow the recommendations for disposal. If the recommended disposal method is not possible, and you cannot use up the product, then you should store the product until a suitable disposal method is available.
2. Do not bury household wastes or any containers, empty or full, in your backyard. Do not throw them into roadside dumps unless you have obtained a permit of exception from your local health.
3. Do not dispose of any materials by pouring them onto the ditches, sink holes, ground or down street drains, or storm sewers. Do not mix wastes; this could create a violent reaction or form a more hazardous product.
4. When disposing of pesticides, leave them in the original container with cap securely placed to avoid spill. Dry chemicals should be wrapped with newspaper and placed in a plastic bag before placing them in the trash bins. Never flush waste pesticides down the drain or toilet.
