DISCUSSION
We Filipinos are unique and happy people. We care about our family and the people around us. We are selfless and good-natured. We have a rich culture. We are known for our close family ties and extended family structures.
Seldom do we see an old couple living by themselves in a home. During special events, every member of their clan is invited.
We Filipinos are cooperative and will always extend a helping hand to those in need. We are also noted for being adaptable and resilient. We can easily adjust to a situation at a given time and place. We have proven this in times of calamities.
The most admirable character of the Filipinos is being hospitable. We receive friends in our homes with warmth and friendship.
Another very good trait of the Filipinos is honesty. Even before the coming of the Spaniards, our ancestors have told stories of how the Chinese traders did not lose anything during the time they were trading with the Filipinos. We have heard stories of people returning things they found to the rightful owners.
One of the admirable customs or practice by our people is bayanihan. Bayanihan is the Filipino spirit of communal unity and cooperation related to damayan or helping one another in times of need without expecting anything in return.
Filipinos are God-fearing and prayerful. We believe that our lives, talents, skills, and whatever resources we have are God-given. We are prayerful and we observe the practices of our religions.
Filipinos are known to be respectful in our words and actions. We show respect in many ways; some of us kiss our older relatives or parents on the cheek. Others make the sign of pagmamano. The words “po” and “opo” are used in speaking as a sign of respect to elders. Terms of appellation or identifying names like kuya, ate, manang, and manong are used to address elders.
Filipinos need to preserve these positive attitudes and pass these on to the younger generations so that they will be guided in their endeavors.
How can the good traits and attitudes of the Filipinos be preserved?
Are these Filipino traits and attitudes still practiced by our present generation? Cite instances to prove your answer.
However, there are bad or negative habits/attitudes that Filipinos practice.
Laziness
Laziness is the quality of being unable to perform the task or job because the person depends on others to do the job for him/her.
Tardiness
Tardiness is being late. It is sad that even on important events and occasions, Filipinos do not start on time.
Ningas-Kugon and Mañana Habit
There are Filipinos who do or perform their assigned task well only in the beginning and become lazy toward the middle or at the end of the task. This attitude is called ningas-kugon. Sometimes, even if the task is completed, he/she will not pass the requirement with quality. Filipinos will just say, “Bahala na.” Sometimes, they show mañana habit which shows procrastination or putting off work.
Colonial Mentality
Filipinos shows preference for imported products with the belief that the local products are of inferior quality.
Padrino System
Padrino system is the practice of employing relatives to government offices even if the relative does not have necessary skills for the job.
Extravagance
Filipinos celebrate costly fiestas, birthdays, graduations, or any family events. We like expensive clothes and jewelry. These practices waste our money which burden our economic condition. Negative attitudes and practices hinder progress because they often result in low productivity and poor performance.
