OBSERVATION REPORT
Name of the School Observed: Poblacion Night High School
School Address: P. Rodriguez St., Lapu-lapu City
Date of Visit: 09-14-2021
Poblacion Night has a population of 86 students from grade 7 to grade 10. In grade 9, there were 24 students, 12 of them were females, and 12 also were males. The majority of the students in the grade were Roman Catholic, only 2 students has a different religion. These students were striving hard to sustain their living expenses while studying.
At the beginning of the day, the majority of the class was full of energy and excitement on their faces as they can see virtually their classmates and friends and also their teacher. The female students were full of stories that they wanted to share with their classmates, and other males were cracking jokes with their close classmates. Some students were not as excited as the others. They were feeling agitated and worried on their faces and also the feeling of being a stranger. Most loquacious students were females than males. Guys were only communicating first to their same gender just, like the girls. Students feel comfortable talking with the same gender regardless of their age. These 24 students ages 14- 17 years old. The mature students, older, seemed not bothered with the age gap with their classmates.
During their class, the most attentive students were the females. Most males were busy doing some unrelated stuff like playing. The eyes of the students were out-of-focused on the presented lesson of their teacher. Other female students, they're looking elsewhere and not to the class. Students seemed focused when their teacher called their attention but, their faces talks like their minds were out of nowhere. When their teacher asked questions to know if her students were following her discussion, those students who did not pay attention were so obviously not paying attention during the discussion because they could not answer their teacher correctly as a result, their teacher called their attention every time she noticed that her students were not listening or paying attention to her discussion. Calling the students' attention may be helpful to get back their focus on the class but, students were not the same. Some students, when their attention was called they listened, but the younger ones, seemed not so bothered if their teacher called their attention many times. These students needed the special attention of the teacher therefore, the teacher did some special attention to them. During the group activity, few female students were so shy, introverted, to mingle with their group mates. Among the 5 members, one member stood as their leader though nobody said it or told her to be a leader as an instinct a group needs someone to be the head. While doing their activity, the females students were more verbose than males. There were males also doing nothing but just waiting for their group to finished the task. Other members who were confident enough to explain their work volunteered to do it.
After their classes, break time, the students who seemed quiet during class hours were amazingly talking openly to their classmates. They interacted opposite during class hours, talking illimitable like nobody surrounded them. The fears they felt during class hours was suddenly disappeared after hearing the signal of their break time. Those religious students prayed their food before consuming it. Others take their time worth it, preparing their next class. They did not take their break rather they used it to make ready their minds and their selves for their upcoming class. The boys, as expected, were gathered according to their interests. Those mature students have their topic while those younger ones have their interest too like playing games rather than talking nonsense. Although the female students have different religions were not a hindrance for them to socialize with other students. The introverted students chose to be alone than going somewhere or having a conversation with the other.
According to Ms. Normalyn Alonso, the grade 9 teacher, every student has their capabilities and abilities. They have their unique identification. Others may seem annoying yet, at the end of the day, you’ll find it as a spice or a challenge in the classroom’s management, and a teacher’s patience. Students are different, others are superior in academics, and there are some also who need more attention or help. Delivering a lesson, your goal is your objective, and for those students who are not so good in the class, the teacher should bring them more into focus. Classroom challenges are always present in the classroom, as Ms. Alonso added. And because of these challenges, a teacher should be flexible, resourceful, and gumptious. Strategies and methods in teaching are the keys for the teacher to have success in delivering her lesson. For those students, who are shy to join or socialize with their classmates, what I did is let them expose, like speaking in front of the class and encourage them to join another group. A teacher is their second mother, and we know what they are required to learn.
1. Identify the persons who play key roles in the relationships and interactions in the classrooms. What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a mascot/joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/pessimist?
The teacher and the students play key roles in the relationships and interactions in the classroom. These two are important in playing key roles because without the other one, example the teacher, their will be nothing happened in the classroom. The teacher is the facilitator and the students are the learner. There were students who played as a leader of the class, a joker who makes or almost everyone to laugh, an attention seeker who bothered his seatmate just to get the attention, and also a doubter. The leader who leads the class during their teacher is out is the who one is more confident and standout in academic.
What makes the learners assume these roles? What factors affect their behavior?
Without the students there will be no learners inside the classroom. The learners assume these roles as important in the class to make or have balance in the classroom. Without a leader, a joker who makes fun, an attention seeker, and a doubter the classes would be monotonous or unenthusiastic. These roles of the learners makes the class colorful and wonderful. The students behavior affects the rules implemented by their teacher and their roles as well as a learner inside the classroom.
2. Is there anyone you observed who appear left out? Are there students who appear "different?" Why do they appear different? Are they accepted or rejected by the others? How is this shown?
These introverted and lowly students appear to be left out in the class and look different from the others. They steer clear of themselves to socialize with others. There were students as well that are not so good at academics. Due to uneven status in school and academics, these lesser students were decline by the others who were on top of the class. And his was manifested through their repetitive action of rejecting and not helping the lowly students.
What does the teacher do to address issues like this?
The number of the students may have a slight issue for the teacher, the higher population of the students, the more responsibility the teacher has. In this grade, the total population is manageable, as a result, the teacher would notice it immediately if there’s something wrong or different from the class. Because of this, the teacher takes the initiative by implementing or executing some special attention to these lowly students by giving them extra effort and time. Helping the students to overcome their fears and shyness, the teacher let them joining different group activities and let them explain their work.
3. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual differences of the students?
No matter what the behavior or status the students have inside the classroom, the teacher should treat them fairly. Through manifesting a fairly values inside the classroom, there will be harmonious despite of these individual differences of the students.
4. What strategies does the teacher use to maximize the benefits of diversity in the classroom? How does the teacher leverage diversity?
The teacher practice cultural sensitivity, know her students well and acknowledge and respect every student she has. Encouraging the students also to participate in active learning is her strategy also. Through these strategies, her objectives will be accomplished.
1. How did you feel being in that classroom? Did you feel a sense of oneness or unity among the learners and between the teacher and the learner?
Being in the colorful and wonderful room that the learners played their roles well, as an observer I felt the sense of oneness among the learners and between the teacher and the learner. As I am watching them, participating, doing their activities, and raising questions, I feel that I am not a stranger or just an observer in the classroom. I feel their full cooperation with their teacher, willingness, and eagerness to learn. Even though some students were not completely socializing with their classmates, but they tried their very best to be part of that class. The students work their part well enough as learners, and the teacher facilitates enough as well to her students.
