The Complexities of Simplicity
By: John Kazerooni
Nearly fifty years have passed since I earned my Master’s in Operational Research, a field that taught us how to dissect complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces by identifying variables and constraints. Yet, for me, the unknown always felt overwhelming.
Recently, however, a personal project led me back into the realm of problem-solving.
What seemed at first to be a simple task quickly revealed its hidden complexities. The more I delved into it, the more variables and constraints I encountered, and with them, an important realization: our grasp of the unknown is often shallow. The more we explore, the more we uncover just how much remains beyond our understanding.
This experience served as a reminder not to underestimate a problem. What appears straightforward on the surface often conceals unexpected layers of complexity. As the unknowns increase, so does our insight into the true nature of the problem. It’s a humbling truth—no matter how much we believe we know, there is always more that eludes us. We must face challenges with care, curiosity, and an open mind, because underestimating a problem can obscure its true essence.
Yet the fundamental question lingers:
Is there ever a final solution, or are our answers always bound by the limits of our understanding? Do problem solvers truly find solutions, or do they merely get closer to an ever-elusive truth? ...
