Ecclesiastes 1:1-18
Everything Is Meaningless
1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
3 What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.
Wisdom Is Meaningless
12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;
what is lacking cannot be counted.
16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.
18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;
the more knowledge, the more grief.
John 14:6-7
Jesus Says He is the Only Way to God
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
The life of man and what a man experiences in life is difficult to understand...The wise Solomon had his questions about life...Solomon tells us everything is meaningless...
For me the whys of life of man must be answered by Jesus...No other Man can answer the questions Solomon has...Man is limited in his knowledge and lives a limited number of years on earth and then he ages, maybe suffers and dies...Man will always be limited in knowledge...Jesus has the wisdom from God and His wisdom does not come from sorrow...He too, was a Teacher of Israel and the King of Kings...He understands the questions of Solomon, and the questions of life....His Father has this Complete Understanding...And He came from His Father...God understands everything, life, death, how we live, why we live like we do -He understands all things...God is eternal and aware of all things...God created us, and so we seek Him...And because He created us, we are missing and looking for Something in life until we find Him...We seek Him, to be with Him...Life is meaningless without Him...And the Way to Him is the Truth, the Way, and the Life, because no one gets to God, except through Him...
So as Solomon writes about the meaningless of life, we need Jesus to help us answer these whys of the meaningless...What are our life's experiences and the human experience and what makes sense to us?...Jesus Himself was born in a stable, grew up poor, was arrested for having a very special relationship to His Father, and died on a cross...Then He was resurrected and came back to life by God...For this very reason we can see purpose in a meaningless life...For how does a Man come back from the dead and then live again for forty days?...He ascended to heaven to be with God...And Jesus tells us He is the Only Way to God...
God resurrected His Son...God is real...God is he Living God...God gives life meaning...God sent His Son to help us understand these things and to learn about Him...When you erally know Jesus you also know His Father...
