John 6:28-32
Belief in and on the Evidence of Miracles
28Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
30So they asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
32Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
John 14:11-12
11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
Do we need miracles?...Did Jesus have to do miracles for you to believe?...What if Jesus did no miracles?...Would you still believe He was the Son of God?...Do we need miracles?...
Jesus did many miracles...He turned water into wine...He walked on water...He calmed the stormy skies...He healed many of differing diseases...He resurrected the dead...He fed thousands from very little...God had did many miracles in getting the forefathers out of Egypt and into the promised land...
If He had done no miracles would He been credible?...He tells us whoever has faith in Him, would do what He has been doing...It takes faith to believe in miracles...Philip who is questioning Jesus in John chapter fourteen has been with Him for about three years...Did Philip really know Jesus?...He had seen most if not all of the miracles...Philip would have had these miracles on his mind, when he was questioning Jesus...It appears Philip knew many things about Jesus, but could not put his finger on who He was...
Jesus tells us to believe Him and in Him...Jesus tells us also that He is in the Father and the Father is in me...He tells us that we can do greater things than these, because He is going to the Father...We will later know about the greatest miracle, the miracle of the resurrection...
What are the works God requires?...To believe...The work God requires is for us to believe in the One He sent...Belief takes faith...Faith is a gift of God...We worry about short term issues of food, feeling, family, work and other daily things...Jesus tries to get our focus on God and eternal things...Jesus wants us to believe in Him not for physical satisfaction of everyday desires and pleasures, but for our souls...Our souls will live eternally and how are we working everyday on these issues (issues of the soul and Holy Spirit, and in getting to eternal life)...He teaches us to trust in God...
Did Philip need these miracles to believe Jesus was the Messiah?...I think Philip did need these miracles to believe...He needed it for a part of his faith...Do we need the miracles of the Old Testament to believe?...I think we do...The Father and Son are miracles Themselves...God created the earth, a miracle...God raised the Son after He died, showing to all that we to could be raised from the dead, if we believe...Our God is a God of miracles...
