Type and Anti-types in the Bible
by Steve Janke
When talking about the Bible and we say this is a type or that is a type. What are we talking about?
The word “type” comes from the Greek word tuptein, to strike. In Webster's dictionary, type is defined as "to figure, to represent by a model or symbol beforehand.
Type is defined as person, object, or event in the Old Testament regarded as foreshadowing a corresponding reality in the New Testament.
What is an anti-type?
Antitype is defined as a person, thing, or idea represented by an earlier type or symbol, such as a New Testament event prefigured in the Old Testament.
The person or thing when it becomes evident or clearer is called the antitype.
How do we know whether we should be talking about this or not? Do we really need to learn or do this?
Heb. 10:1 = For the law, having a 1shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things,2
Col 2:16-17 = "Let no one, then, call you to account for what you eat or drink or in regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ."
Matt 13:34
Lk 8:9-10 = Christ spoke in parables and aphorisms.
PS 78:1 = God spoke differently “I will open my mouth in a 3parable;…”
According to C. I. SCOFIELD, he defines it this way:
“Wherever a person assumes a thing to be symbolic of something else in the Bible, the Bible must itself interpret the symbol or it cannot be accepted as symbolic.” (Copyright 1998: William A. Simpson)
What are some types in the Bible?
We have types because God loves to communicate in and with symbolism. See attached,
These symbolisms we call types. It helps us humans put in a class or category, the item. To get a grasp of understanding..
1. Heb. 8:5
2. The New King James Version. 1982 (Heb 10:1). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
3. Matt. 13:34, 35

Its ice-cream!
Here God displays his glorious creativity and symbolism in a story of events. He puts the story together so that the construction in and of itself is symbolic, a type and an antitype. Like presenting us a bowl of ice cream half vanilla and half chocolate.
Let’s read it together. Are there any types here? Any anti-types?
1 Abigail type of Christ and David type of man:
2 David as type of Christ and Abigail type of man:
Abigail used words with intelligence. Indication of inspired knowledge about David. She used a play on words to either see David's reaction or for poetry. "…He shall sling out, as from the pocket of a sling"
