Genesis 3
Today in Gen 3, I have always wanted to get my head wrapped around the fall of man. It is just that something has been missing, and perhaps while on this earth we may never know. Lately it is being taught that Adam was right there going along with eve in the sin. But, while not denying the sin, I want to paint a picture. Something that I can see in my minds eye and present it to all of you.
- God told Adam not to eat of that tree or you will die (total separation, implied from everything that exist. But knowledge not imputed - separation in your reality)
- Eve was not yet created, so directive was directed to Adam.
- Eve was deceived by Satan
- Eve did not have a name at time of sin, which means things that have a name and things that have no name can be used for sin.
- Adam had warned her, after creation, paraphrased; “Don't go near that tree, don't even touch it!” v.3 God said don't eat only, but it is implied don't touch as well to keep one's self safe.
- Satan reminds Eve with truth, then a lie, a half truth, You are not going to die, the directive was toward Adam, not you, for you were not even created yet! So if you do eat you will become like God. Then you can really help Adam out. Your relationship will become just like Adam's relationship with God. Why would God allow these things even to exist, if they were not good?
- Eve ate first and her eyes were still closed. Adams, eyes were still closed. Eve did not die. Eve thought to tell husband, “look, I am not going to die” when she ate first
- Everything was made good, woman was good, in God's eyes, how could she be wrong?
- After Adam ate, both Adam's and Eve's eyes were responsibly opened. Because Adam is head of the household. Responsibility lies with him, and him alone. God only told Adam, not Eve. But Eve coming from Adam's rib was a part of him. Adam thought he was being responsible for not allowing any part of him to sin.
- Adam saw no condemnation when a part of him (Eve) had sinned and assumed; to be God of his body by taking his eyes off of God, that is God's directive, and putting his eyes on created things and looking at the results, thus allowing deception and deceiving of himself.
- When God asked Adam what had happened, Adam knows God knows everything and God knows that in like manner Eve deceived Adam. Adam does not have to tell God this. But to set the point home Adam says, “the woman you have given me”. Subjective: “I thought everything you made was good, even this woman. What was I to trust? (we do know this answer is, Jesus, which was there).
- Eve admits she deceived the “man”, because she too was deceived by the serpent.
- And God goes to the root which has no explanation, to Satan in the serpent.
This helps me to see the event better, but we can not put our face towards this picture coming from a mere mortal. We must always keep our eyes on Christ and not move them away.
