Matter editors are the first stop from reporters to publishing and who reporters work with the most closely.
Ideally, Matter editors will optimize each story for it's content, then the piece would move to the respective medium editors. Medium editors are the video editor, photo editor, data editor, written editor, etc. Medium editors would then optimize the piece for medium it's being presented in.
However, as of August 25, 2020, the only editorial positions we have filled aside from contributors are matter editors for Crossing the Line and DevelopUS, the managing editor and the editor-in-chief.
As such, the matter editors are responsible for optimizing the format as well as the story itself. If the matter editor does not know much about the format (for example, if the matter editor knows writing well, but not video) then it's the matter editor's responsibility to bring in the managing editor or editor-in-chief for their expertise as needed and appropriate.
The matter editor will do structural edits, copy edits, format edits and fact checks on every piece.
After editing, the matter editor will be responsible for staging and publishing the story on matternews.org.
