As a small startup news nonprofit, we have very little in the way of paid employment opportunities in terms of part-time and full-time staff positions. When these are open, they are posted to LinkedIn, Indeed, Idealist, as well as on our website under "get involved".
However, right now, we do have an open position!
Do you have an entrepreneurial spirit and project management skills? Are you passionate about nonprofit news holding the powerful accountable? You might be the ideal candidate if you answered yes and can thrive in a startup environment. You will learn from and be supported by news revenue experts, our staff, board, and volunteers to design and implement the framework necessary to take our audience revenue generation efforts to the next level, so that we can be a more sustainable nonprofit organization and news source for Columbus.
Grey Matter Media and Matter News are hiring a full-time audience revenue manager to drive revenue by growing our audience donor base. The pay is $54,000 + health benefits and a big perk is 30% of the year (79 paid days) off each year.
Full details can be found here. The application is due by midnight on December 6th. It asks for a resume, 2 references, and a handful of mostly yes-or-no questions.
The regular paid opportunities we have are in the form of freelance contributor assignments. Matter primarily works with a team of "core contributors" that includes people who create content with us on an ongoing basis. We train these core contributors in journalism skills, as well as Matter's way of working and we work with them over time on various projects. Matter is open to receiving applications from freelancers and will plug them into the core team if appropriate. Please understand that our tiny editing team only has capacity to work with so many contributors and we also must maintain diversity of content creators.

We typically take on at least one paid intern per year, but there is no formally/consistently established program/timeline for internships. When internships are open, they are posted to LinkedIn and Indeed, as well as on our website under "get involved".
The most formalized type of volunteers are our board members. At the end of each summer, we invite community members to apply to become board members and we fill vacant board slots each year in the fall. See the board page for more info.
Interested board members may apply year round here, though their application will not be reviewed until fall elections or in the case a vacancy needs filled outside of elections. We do keep their app on file and when spots open up, we follow up with them, asking if they're still interested and giving them the opportunity to update their app.

Outside of board members, we are always interested in volunteers that want to help with various parts of our operation, particularly for Grey Matter Media and the nonprofit side of things.
