We conduct what we call "Editorial Engagement" after each time we publish stories to our website. We email our published pieces to a list of stakeholders relevant to the stories published. This helps us get our stories in front of the power players, organizations, and people who would benefit or represent communities that would benefit from engaging with our coverage. This also expands Matter's audience and reach, exposing new people to our coverage and hopefully down the line creating an opportunity to integrate them into our marketing funnel to become dedicated readers, followers, subscribers and donors.
Editorial engagement happens after we publish our stories. Here is the workflow process to conduct editorial engagement.
Gather the links for which stories have been published that month (Marisa/Cass usually send them in your Monthly Team Update!)
Open the Editorial Engagement View on Airtable. To edit the Ed Engagement Airtable list, you will need to sign into Matter's Airtable account (email Cassie for that info).
Search the web for any stakeholders that you think might need to see our stories. For example, a story about evictions would be good to send to housing advocates, the Mayor's office, the city Department of Development, housing developers, etc.
Add these stakeholders to the table by filling in the fields listed on the spreadsheet (name, org, email, group type, Matter investigation, etc).
When filling in the above information, make sure to fill in the column that says "Stories." To do so, click that record and then find the button in the record that says "Link to a record from Stories" (see image to the bottom right)
6. After you've added any relevant stakeholders related to any of that month's published pieces to the Airtable base, start writing an email to the stakeholders. This can be in bulk or individually, just make sure if you bulk email the pieces that the email is still relevant to all bcc'd on the email. You can find an outreach email template here!
7. Double check your email, and send! You're done!
**Note: If you think the same stakeholder(s) would be interested in all of the pieces published that month, feel free to send in one message. In some instances, such as this, it may not make sense for you to send a bulk email.
