Samuel Disinger was a bit of a whirlwind. He had 12 children, owned 650 acres of farmland that produced thousands of bushels of grain each year, and served as the Town of Lockport Supervisor, the highway commissioner, and the assessor for various years. He was in a 1897 survey book, and he was a US Census taker. He hosted the first Disinger Reunion in 1901. He supported his children's education beyond the usual eighth grade. People called him Uncle Sam, and he was a blacksmith. ➖ His sons, C. Franklin, Harvey, and W. Elwin, followed in his footsteps in civics, business, and education. ➖ Sadly, granddaughter, Jennie, 22, and great-granddaughter, Edith, 18, died from disease before they could marry. ➖ His grandsons, Ellis and Allan, served in WWI. Allan also achieved a law degree from Cornell University and practiced law for 50 years. ➖ Grandson Winthrop stayed on his father, C. Franklin's, farm on Dysinger Rd until he died in 1947. ➖His great-grandsons, Frank (former Disinger Family Historian) and Donald, served in WWII and excelled in their industries. ➖ Great-grandson, John Disinger, a US Army veteran, earned a Ph.D. in education and taught at Ohio University.

Samuel and Nancy (Dollinger) had twelve (12) children between 1854 and 1878, nine (9) boys and three (3) girls, a boy and a girl died as children. Nearly all of their children are interred in the same area of Union-Dysinger Cemetery and were recently added to Find A Grave.
Landmarks of Niagara County, New York Edited by William Pool D. Mason & Company, Publishers, 1897:
"Dysinger, Samuel A., was born in the town of Royalton, December 5, 1835. His father, John Dysinger, came to Niagara county in 1832, with his parents, George and Elizabeth Dysinger, where he (George) kept the hotel at Dysinger's Corners. (see Maps and Locations) John Dysinger married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Carl, and through life was identified as a farmer, taking an active interest in school, church and public affairs, and was recognized as a man of sterling integrity, who ever advanced the best interests of his town and townspeople. He died in 1878. Samuel A. Dysinger was educated in the common schools and through life has been a farmer. In 1856 he married Nancy, daughter of John Dolinger, and they have seven sons and two daughters. Mr. Dysinger is one of the representative farmers in Niagara county, coming to the town of Lockport in 1860 [from neighboring Royalton], with his brother, David M., and has by the force of his own character accumulated about 650 acres of land and is to day one of the most successful farmers in the State of New York. He has served as supervisor two years, highway commissioner three years and assessor for fifteen years."
*** The Lockport Journal Saturday - September 27, 1902 - Our Travelers - Coming to the old Dysinger farm of 100 acres in the town of Royalton, one of the old Niagara county landmarks, Wednesday, smoke was found pouring from the chimney, which indicated warmth and comfort in the old homestead. Watson L. Dysinger was found toasting his shins, and being in a reminiscent mood gave these facts: The farm was deeded by the Holland Land company to John Dysinger in 1835. He had five children born on this farm, three of whom are now living, namely Samuel Dysinger, Mrs. George Barth of Angola, N. Y., and Watson L. Dysinger, the latter now living at the homestead. It was a timber tract which the elder Dysinger cleared. He lived to be 68 years old and died in 1878.
S.A. Dysinger (Samuel) lives on the farm adjoining. He has a blacksmith shop; the anvil of which was ringing as the Journal man entered. "What are you up to today?" asked the scribe. Mr. Dysinger replied, "Oh, the boys thought I couldn't fix this piece of iron as it should be and they wanted to take it to a professional blacksmith, but I thought I would show them I had not forgotten how to forge and weld hot iron. While my muscles are not so supple as they once were I have not lost the knack." And he performed the task with a master hand.
*** THE DAILY CATARACT JOURNAL - FRIDAY, JANUARY 18; 1901 - Supervisor Dysinger of Royalton, who is one of the largest wheat raisers in the county is prepared to furnish the Natural Wood Company with all sorts of wheat and in quantity. ... He has 600 acres of land and his last crop of wheat is said to amount to 5,000 bushels. —Cataract-Journal. Right you are. Uncle Sam Dysinger hails from the prosperous plains of the Town of Lockport. But Lockport, with the great Thompson Mills, the Franklin Mills Wheatlet concern and a prospective wheat food plant to be located in the rehabilitated Chester Mill, expects to take care of Uncle Sam Dysinger’s wheat and all that can be raised around here within 20 miles.
*** THE LOCKPORT DAILY JOURNAL, SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1890 - TOWN LOCKPORT CAUCUS. The town of Lockport republican caucus was held at No. 7, Hodge Opera House, in this city, this afternoon, at two o'clock. The meeting was called to order by Samuel Dysinger. Albert L. Mitchell was elected chairman and Harvey Dysinger clerk, S. E. Dershem and W. M. Clark were elected inspectors. Supervisor—John G. Freeman. Clerk—Harvey Dysinger. Justice of Peace—W. F. Clark. Assessor—John Frazer.

Even though this photo is from Medina this what Gasport would have looked like as well where Samuel Disinger likely took his harvested fruit to sell. Gasport was about 5 miles north of his home. In the picture above there are fruit trees surrounding his house, and there are other photos of his workers spraying his trees. There's no date for this photo, but it was probably taken during Samuel's lifetime.

✞April 17, 1925 C. Franklin Disinger supervisor for the Town of Niagara county and a lifelong resident, died suddenly at his Lockport home on Disinger road yesterday afternoon. Death was due to heart disease.
Mr. Disinger was born in the Town of Royalton on December 21, 1854, the son of Samuel and Nancy Disinger. He attended the Union school in Lockport and after graduation was a teacher in the Town of Lockport for many years. Mr. Disinger was a Republican in politics and served the Town of Lockport as collector. He was completing his second term as supervisor of the town. He was chairman of the agricultural committee of the board of supervisors and a member of several other of its committees. He was also a member of the Grange.
Mr. Disinger is survived by one daughter and four sons: Emily L. Disinger, Winthrop R., Howard H., and Allen E Disinger at home, and Ellis S. Disinger of Whitney, Neb.; four brothers and two sisters: W. Elwin, Town of Royalton; Homer E., Walter B., James G., Elmira T., and Effie E. Disinger of the Town of Lockport. ✞Feb 7, 1905 At an early hour this morning Lottie Richardson Disinger, wife of C. F. Disinger, passed into rest after an illness of more than six years. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, four sons, Winthrope, Howard, Ellis and Allen, two daughters, Jennie and Emily, all at home; two brothers, H. H. Richardson of McDonald, Pa., and J. B. Richardson of Lockport; three sisters, Mrs. J. K. Woods, Mrs. H. D. Bristol and Mrs. E. E. Crosby, all of this county
✞The funeral of the late Mrs. Lottie Dysinger, wife of Frank Dysinger, was held from her late home near Lockport on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 9. Mrs. Dysinger was practically a young woman, being only 41 years of age. During the last six years of her life she had been an invalid and patient sufferer. On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the angel of death suddenly came and she was carried to her long home. It was a noticeable coincidence that just 35 years ago her mother died on the same date. Her neighbors knew her as a trusted friend, and a genial companion. She leaves to mourn her loss a husband and six children, Winthrop R., Howard H., Ellis S., Allen E., Jennie F. and Emily L., all of whom are at home. Interment was in Glenwood cemetery at Lockport. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. C. Roszell of Barker, N. Y. Mr. Dysinger has the sympathy of the entire community in his sad bereavement.
*** Lockport Daily Journal, 1 July 1887 - W. Elwin Disinger and his cousin Dewey Dysinger received preliminary certificates for passing the prestigious NY State Regents exams in 1887. Both W. Elwin and Dewey had attended the Lockport Union (High) School in the city when it was unusual for rural district school children to go past the eighth grade. At the time this may have been akin to a college degree. In 1908 W. Elwin ran for the First Niagara (County) District School Commissioner. His brother C. Franklin also attended Lockport Union School and taught school for the First Niagara District. So the Disingers valued education when it wasn't widely accepted particularly in rural areas.

It was a charity hospital in the beginning." See Edith M. Disinger's obituary below for more about tuberculosis treatment.

Pneumothorax was a treatment used in what state of the art medical facility in Niagara County?
Answer Tuberculosis Sanitarium/Mt. View. Until the 1900s, no treatment for tuberculosis existed and was at one time the leading cause of death in the United States. Families and their doctors could only watch a patient’s downward path to death, helplessly, and other family members and friends frequently became infected themselves and followed the same path to the grave. In the 1800s patients were instructed to stay in an airtight room, wrapped in a feather blanket, near a hot stove. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s the medical profession stressed the infectious nature of tuberculosis. The war against tuberculosis really had its beginning late in the nineteenth century were patients were sent to sanatoria for rest, fresh air, sun, good nutrition and isolation to prevent the spread of infection food.
By 1910 several community organizations petitioned the Board of Supervisors of Niagara County for a Tuberculosis Sanitarium. By June 1916, $100, 000 was appropriated to build a hospital and a site was selected on Upper Mountain Road in the Town of Lockport. On December 11, 1917, plans were approved for the hospital and for renovation of the old Almshouse building for use as a temporary hospital. At this time the name changed from Niagara County Tuberculosis Hospital to Niagara Sanatorium. The following year Dr. W.E. Deuel was appointed the first Superintendent. In 1920 the hospital started using X-rays and the Red Cross furnished and equipped the basement of the pavilion with recreation rooms for ex-soldiers and other patients. Some of this included card tables, books, magazines, and a wireless outfit including a wireless telephone. Two years later a nurse’s residence opened and an Occupational Therapy department was started in 1923. Dr. Arthur N. Aitkens introduced the use of Pneumothorax as an addition treatment of TB. Pneumothorax is a treatment where the lung is collapsed, giving the lung a chance to heal. Later it may be allowed to inflate again and breathe as before.
In the following years the Niagara Sanatorium added a Children’s Building and additions to the nurses’ residence. A Skilled Nursing Facility, Guillemont Building was dedicated in 1939 and expanded in 1947. After 1943, when Albert Schatz discovered Streptomycin, the first true cure for tuberculosis, sanatoriums began to close. As a result, in 1957 the Niagara Sanatorium re-invented itself and was renamed the Mount View Hospital with its mission expanded from the care of tuberculosis patients to a multi-care facility.

note- Samuel Disinger's children
The following are the youngest 11 of Samuel's 12 children. Except for C. Franklin, the eldest, and Nancy, who died as an infant, all were interred with Samuel and their mother. Their names are engraved on Samuel's gravestone. Only C. Franklin, Albert, and W. Elwin were married, and only C. Franklin had children. After their father, Samuel, died, Harvey lived with his siblings L. Elmira, Effie, Homer, Walter, and James at their home on Akron Rd in the Town of Lockport, and being the oldest, he was listed as the head of the household in the 1920 US Census. There was a single newspaper article about Mrs. Harvey Dysinger, but there was nothing about a wife in his obit, any census, or any other source. One of Harvey's obits mentions Lake Ridge Rd, which was likely a different colloquial name for Johnnycake Ridge/Road. Because Samuel reportedly owned 600 acres in various parts of the Town of Lockport and Royalton, it's possible that Samuel and his children's home street was often misconstrued.

***The Niagara Democrat, 31 March 1888 - DYSINCER-VAN CLEVE, Despite the almost impassible roads, a large number of invited guests were present Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. Charles Wynkoop, four miles from the city, to witness the marriage of Albert F. Dysinger and Frances E. Van Cleve, A few minutes past seven o'clock, the bridal party, preceded by the bride's brother, A, D. Van Cleve, as groomsman, and Miss Jennie C. Hyman, as bridesmaid, took their places under a well-arranged arch of evergreens and flowers, when the marriage rite was performed by Rev, H. J. Watkins of the Lutheran church. Complete neatness, joined with the most exquisite taste, without dash, or objectionable display, characterized the dress of all the party, and received the just commendation of all the guests. That the young couple were held in high esteem was clearly evinced by the presence of such a large number this stormy night, and the unusual amount of tasteful, useful and valuable gifts, not only from friends near, but from Buffalo, Ohio and Kentucky; also among the gifts were a fine dinner and tea set, large and superior hanging and table lamps, silver knives, forks, spoons, butter knives, sugar shells, castors, fruit and berry dishes; also fine glass sets, beautiful clock, willow chair, table and other linen, and many other excellent gifts, including also cash of silver and gold, with a check of $25, and all crowned with a handsome bible, stand and cover, the gift of the bride's mother. The banquet was in keeping with all the rest, being full and complete, the tables being literally burdened with goods things. The guests surely were not turned out into the storm hungry nor joyless, The happy couple will go to housekeeping near their old home on the large farm of the late George Dysinger, recently purchased by the father of the groom. Happy and long may their life be.
note- The Van Cleves and the Wynkoops had farms on Wynkoop Road between Akron Road and Dysinger Road, not far from Albert's father, Samuel Disinger's home on Akron Road, and his brother, C. Franklin Disinger's farm on Dysinger Road. The farm that Albert's father bought for him was his great-grandfather, George Disinger's farm on Akron/Bunker Hill Road. Samuel bought it from his first cousin, William Disinger, who had acquired it after his grandfather, George Disinger, had died. Samuel eventually sold the farm to his first cousin once removed, Henry Disinger, apparently, before Albert died at 32 in 1893. After his death, Albert's wife, Frances, may have moved back in with her parents.

7800 Akron Rd., built 1800
This was George Dysinger II's home/farm until he died in 1884. At that point, it appears his nephew Samuel A. Disinger (see above) managed to acquire the property since all of George II's children had died, moved away, or already owned a farm. The 1908 Town of Royalton map has S. A. Disinger owning this property. On the 1938 Royalton map, it was owned by W. E. Disinger after his father Samuel A. had died in 1910. In a 1939 newspaper article (see below), W. Elwin mentions his farm was five (5) miles southeast of Lockport (almost exactly here), which he had farmed since 1893 when he was 26/27 years old. 1893 happens to be the year his brother, Albert, died, and his father, Samuel, sold the farm he had bought for Albert. Samuel likely bought the farm for W. Elwin after Albert died, although he may not have lived in the house right away. His 1910 marriage announcement (see above) mentioned he lived in the Town of Lockport, and they were moving to Dysinger's Corners, meaning here. By 1938, W. Elwin also owned his deceased grandfather John Deacon's farm from his deceased father, Samuel, who had previously owned it. W. Elwin reportedly owned 200 acres at the time of his death.

*** THE NIAGARA SUN, LOCKPORT NY Tuesday, April 5, 1910 - W. Elwin Disinger of the town of Lockport and Miss Carrie Brooks of the town of Royalton were united in marriage last evening by Rev. M. O. Van Keuren at his home on Walnut street. The bride, who was unattended, was gowned in a blue traveling suit Mr. and Mrs. Disinger will be at home in Dysinger's Corners.
note- Lockport Daily Journal, 1 July 1887 - W. Elwin Disinger and his cousin Dewey Dysinger received preliminary certificates for passing the prestigious NY State Regents exams in 1887. Both W. Elwin and Dewey had attended the Lockport Union (High) School in the city when it was unusual for rural district schoolchildren to go past the eighth grade. At the time, this may have been almost equal to a college degree. In 1908, W. Elwin ran for the First Niagara (County) District School Commissioner. His brother C. Franklin also attended Lockport Union School and taught in the First Niagara District. So the Disingers valued education when it wasn't widely accepted in rural areas.
