Highlights
Thomas, great-grandson of Barthel, son of Nicolaus, was born in Pennsylvania, moved to Seneca County, New York, then to Niagara County, New York, and finally to Seneca County, Ohio, with possibly a land warrant from his war veteran brother George. ➖ Thomas registered for the NY Militia in 1812 due to the threat of attack by the British. ➖ Three of his grandsons died in the Civil War: Isaac, Henry, and Thomas W. ➖ Great-grandson Dr. Samuel Long practiced medicine in Ransomville, NY. ➖ Thomas currently has over a thousand descendants.
Ohio to Michigan
Many of Thomas' descendants relocated to Michigan from Ohio. Google AI says: In the late 1800s, many farmers moved from Ohio to Michigan seeking better opportunities and economic advantages. Land in Ohio became more expensive and less available as the population and agriculture grew. Michigan had relatively inexpensive land, fertile soils, and access to markets.

Thomas, at age 27, registered in the NY Militia for the defense of his county, but seemingly did not see combat. Thomas was living in Fayette, Seneca County, New York, near Geneva, in 1812, Seneca County being mentioned in the article above. There's also a record of a Thomas Dysinger in Capt. Ireland's Company, Riflemen, New York Militia. The threat was a false alarm; the British did not land at the mouth of the Genesee River.

2003 Thomas, Son of Nicholas reunion paper by Frank Disinger - "Thomas was born into the union of Johan Nicolaus Deissinger (son of Henrich, grandson of Barthel) and Eve Catherine Weisner on September 2, 1785 in Berks County, PA. This birth is recorded in the record of the Altalaha Church of Rehresburg, PA. He moved with his parents to Cumberland County shortly thereafter. The 1800 Toboyne Township, Cumberland County, PA census (though not listing the children's names) does agree with the known family make-up at that time.
Prior to 1805 he moved to Seneca County, NY. His brother Johannes (John) had previously moved there in 1804. Available census and vital statistic records quite well establish his family locations over the years.
He is listed in the 1810 and 1820 census records in Fayette, Seneca County, New York.
His first wife [Elizabeth] died Feb. 11, 1826 and is buried in the cemetery at Burgh Church in Fayette. He married his second wife, Catherine Michael in 1826.
He is listed in the 1830 Town of Lockport, Niagara County, New York census on page 391. His brother David had arrived in Lockport in 1828 and brother George is listed in the 1830 Town of Royalton census. These are adjacent towns.
Thomas is listed in 1840 US census for Wood County, Ohio. With him are 3 males, 1 is age 10-14 and 2 are age 20-29. Three females; 2 age 10-14 and one age 50-59. According to a descendant of his daughter Elizabeth and Samuel Bear Jr., they migrated to Ohio in 1836. [see grandson John Bair]
Thomas died May 20, 1854 in Bloomville, Seneca County, Ohio and is buried in Woodland cemetery, Bloomville, Seneca County, Ohio."
note- In the 1810 census records in Fayette, Seneca County, NY, Thomas was listed with 3 children, matching his 3 youngest children, Jacob, Susan, and Christian. George had likely died before 1810. By the 1820 census, Thomas was listed with 6 children, matching his 6 children, Jacob, Susan, Christian, John, Daniel, and Elizabeth, minus George. Twins David and Sarah were born in 1827 to Thomas's second wife, meaning that Thomas, with 4 children under 15, moved his family from Seneca County to Niagara County (nearly 100 miles) with horses and wagons sometime before 1830, which likely took about a week.
In 1836, Thomas moved his family from Niagara County, NY, to Seneca County, Ohio, nearly 300 miles, with horses and wagons again, which took about 3 weeks or longer. Although several of his older children were married, they all moved to Ohio by themselves or with their father, except for Susan, who was married with 4 children and remained in Niagara County. Thomas may have had a land warrant from his brother George (see below).
note- Thomas 66, his second wife Catherine 46, and their daughter Sara Ann 23 were listed in the 1850 US Census of Bloomville, Seneca Co, OH. Although difficult to read, Thomas was seemingly employed as a farm helper/hand. Sara and her brother David (see below) were twins, and a note in the census indicates Sara was insane.
Much of what Frank Disinger wrote about the Thomas Deissinger branch came from Clint E. Dysinger 1910-1992 and his nephew Eldon E. Dysinger 1937-2024 both descendants of Thomas, which Frank acknowledged in his paper. Thomas' descendants were not mentioned in the first 11 family reunions.
Excerpt from: New York Genealogical & Biographical Society, Why and How New Yorkers Migrated to the Great Plains - "Free or relatively inexpensive lands could be had if one was willing to move westward. At various points throughout the nineteenth century, military land warrants were issued to veterans and their surviving widows for service in the War of 1812. If your family included a veteran of that conflict, he may have received a warrant. Recognize that though your solider or veteran was eligible for such a warrant, he may not have made the claim himself. Bounty-land warrants were transferable instruments that could be bartered or sold, and they often were. Sometimes the warrant was filed on behalf of family. Again, militia-aged and eligible men should be thoroughly examined for their place in the armed forces. If they served, bounty-land warrants should be sought at the National Archives in Washington."
note- George Disinger, Thomas' younger brother, served in the War of 1812 and may have claimed a federal military land warrant. George could have given or sold it to Thomas, who may have used it to claim land in Ohio. George's military service records are in the National Archives. David Deissinger, the youngest brother, served with his brother George in the same company and may have also claimed a land warrant. David's son, David Disinger (Jr), moved to Ohio/Indiana, possibly using his father's land warrant.
The highlighted section above is the original German handwritten Altalaha Church record of Thomas' baptism. The transcribed text above is from this record. The dates 2 Sep and 18 Sep are clearly visible in the first column. Not visible is 1785 recorded at the top of the page. The name "Thomas" is in the second column. The second column is "Hannickel" (nickname for Nicolaus), "Theissinger" (split in two), and "Eva Catharina". The third column is the names of the sponsor couple.

Corner of New Haven and Marion St, Bloomville, Seneca Co, OH
Thomas and his family were listed in the 1850 US Census of Bloomville, Seneca Co, OH. Thomas's neighbors were his son Christian (although his age appears incorrect) and Thomas T. Cooley with his son William Cooley, who appears on an 1864 Seneca Co, OH map at the above location. Unfortunately, there's no other map before 1864, so this may or may not be correct. Thomas's nephew David Disinger Jr's farm in Jackson Township, Seneca Co., was about 20 miles northwest of Bloomville, and Tiffen, OH, was about 9 miles west. Still, there's no indication of any contact between them. There were post offices nearby, so they could have been writing letters to each other. See Maps and Locations.

6695 Dysinger Rd, built 1850
This was the location of Susan & Jacob Long's farm in the Town of Lockport. The property was labeled Mrs. S. Long on the Lockport Township 1875 map because Jacob died in 1862. Some of their adult children stayed on the farm. To the east, the farm next door was labeled B. Long because Benjamin lived there after his brother John moved to Akron Road. On Akron Road in the Town of Lockport, another farm was labeled B. Long about halfway between Bowmiller Rd. and Wynkoop Rd on the south side, but we can't pinpoint the actual owner.

Five (5) of John and Magdaline (Bair) Dysinger's children are interred in the Perry Center Cemetery in Perry Township, Wood County, OH, while John II is buried in Bairdstown, OH, and his sister Caroline's gravesite is unknown. However, John and Magdaline's graves are not in Find A Grave with their 5 children. Francis, John II, and Caroline were supposedly born in New York. John was born in Fayette, NY, where his grandfather Nicolaus Deissinger had lived. John Dysinger II's obit states his family moved to Ohio when he was 7, meaning about 1842. However, his brothers Eli and Daniel, were purportedly born in Ohio in 1839 and 1841. Caroline was supposedly born in 1839 in Lockport, NY, which means that John and Magdaline lived in Lockport for at least a short time before moving to Ohio. That's possible since John's sister, Elizabeth, was married in Lockport in 1836, and their uncle, George Disinger, moved to Royalton near Lockport in 1830.

►Mini-biography: click to expand/collapse
In the 1850 US Census for Bloomville, Seneca County, Ohio, Sarah, 23, lived with her father and mother, Thomas and Catherine Deissinger. She was identified as 'insane'. "The U.S. Census records used terms like 'insane' and 'idiot' to categorize individuals, particularly in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. The terms were not precisely defined, leading to inconsistencies in their application." Sarah may have been disabled or incapacitated in some way, but not necessarily insane.
In the 1860 US Census, Sarah, 33, was listed in the Eden Township, Seneca County Poor House since her father had died, and likely her mother had too. She was not identified as insane.
On 6 October 1868, George Volger, 52/53, married Sarah, 40/41, in Seneca County, Ohio. George was a Civil War veteran born in Germany. In the 1870 US Census, Sarah and George lived in Bloom Township. George was employed as a basket maker. By 1890, George had likely died because Sarah applied for a US Civil War Pension for widows.
In the 1900 US Census for Hardin County near Forest, Ohio, Sarah, 73, lived with her brother David, 73, after his wife had died. David was listed as a dairyman, which means he presumably owned a dairy farm. Sarah and David were likely twins since they were both born in 1827.
After David died in 1900, Sarah died in 1911 in nearby Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio. George Volger's daughter Sophie was likely from a previous marriage since she was born before Sarah married George. Unfortunately, Sarah, George, and Sophie's graves cannot be located in FindAGrave.
