War of 1812
"In the Spring of 1813, our grandfather [David Dysinger], then a young man of 22, enlisted in the Army in Pennsylvania and was detailed to duty on the Niagara Frontier [War of 1812, page 336], then a scene of great activity in the warfare between the mother country and our own." - 1901 Reunion paper by Stephen A. Dysinger grandson.
note- David served in the same company as his brother George.
WikipediA - During the War of 1812, the "Niagara Frontier" refers to the area along the Niagara River, where the most intense fighting between American and British forces occurred, with numerous battles fought around Fort Niagara, including the notable battles of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane, making it one of the most heavily contested battlefronts of the war; this region saw significant destruction to settlements and heavy casualties on both sides.

note- Maria was the sister of George Disinger's wife, Elizabeth Hollenbach. She left David and married Benjamin Fesler, although divorces were frowned on. She was listed in her father Conrad's will with her husband Benjamin, her sister Elizabeth, and George Disinger, her brother-in-law. (see below)
note- David and Catherine's daughter, Elizabeth (see below), married Henry Ernest, and his brother George's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Ernest. While they were both born in Pennsylvania (many Ernst/Ernests were in PA, most of them were immigrants from Germany in the early 1700s), they do not seem to be directly related other than that they married Disinger cousins. While Henry Ernest's family is well documented on FamilySearch, going back to 1450 in Germany, John Ernest's parents are unknown. David's second wife, Catharine Ernest, was Henry Ernest's first cousin, meaning that daughter Elizabeth married her first cousin once removed.

5445 Keck Rd, built 1880
This is essentially the location of David Dysinger's original farm in 1828. His name is on the 1852 Niagara County map near this spot. On the 1875 Town of Lockport map, the property is under someone else's name since David had died by then, and his children didn't keep the farm. The house above was built about 30 years after his death.
►Marriage controversy: click to expand/collapse
WIKITREE - Family Tree of Maria (Hollenbaugh) Disinger - There is controversy about whether David DISINGER SR. first married Maria Barbara HOLLENBAUGH and then married Catherine Ernest. At this time in American history, divorce was not acceptable and people in such a situation took care to obscure the event. In this case there is actually reason to believe that there was a three way separation as follows: David DISINGER (Jr) married Maria Barbara HOLLENBAUGH and then married Catherine ERNEST. Benjamin FESLER married Elizabeth HOLLENBAUGH and then married Maria Barbara HOLLENBAUGH while George DISINGER married Elizabeth HOLLENBAUGH. This must have been an amicable change to all parties as for many years they lived on farms adjacent to or across the road from each other in Niagara Co., NY. Several potential sources for these assertions were checked for their sources but none were forthcoming. These were: 1. A computer spreadsheet found at the Niagara Co. Historical Society prepared by J. D. Bruning who was contacted by telephone and had no source for his claims. The spreadsheet reads as follows: (F) Father, (M) Mother, (S) Spouse a. 16515 Fesler, Benjamin (S) Maria Barbara Hollenbach; b. 16516 Fesler, Rebecca (F) Benjamin Fesler (M) Maria Barbara Hollenbach (S) David Blosser; c. 60262 Fessler, Benjamin (S) Elizabeth Hollenbach; d. 16514 Disinger, David (S)Maria Barbara Hollenbach; e. 16518 Disinger, David Jr. (F) David Disinger (M) Maria Barbara Hollenbach; f. 3335 Dissinnger, Ann (S) John Peter Eisenhauer. 2. A computer site no longer active titled “Descendants of Johan Hollenbach” which made these same claims and provided the names and emails of four researchers with their email addresses. Each was contacted using their email and none responded to a request for sources.
Information provided by Frank A. DISINGER of Lockport, NY to Marjory MCEWEN GEROLD, Rev. July 30, 1989, page 11 - 12; also DEISSINGER, DISINGER, DYSINGER FAMILY by Frank Disinger, compiled by Carolyn Epps page 5. [Note: edited for present day location of births.]
Mariah Barbara HOLLENBACH was born in 1791 (or in 1793) in Pennsylvania and died in 1852 in Seneca Co., Ohio. She married David DYSINGER. Sr. They had David Jr., along with another son and a daughter. Maria and David Jr. Moved from Perry Co., PA to Royalton, Niagara Co., NY after the 1820 census along with Maria’s sister and brother-in-law, George DISINGER. Maria then married Benjamin FESSLER in Royalton before 1818. After his death in 1837 she and David Jr. moved to Seneca Co., Ohio along with her brother-in-law George DISINGER. She died in 1851 in Jackson Twp., Seneca Co., Ohio and is buried in the Disinger Cemetery, Seneca Co., Ohio. (4)(5)(6)
Marjory MCEWEN GEROLD in an Email about Mar. 9, 2003 related the following:
“I believe that David and his mother Maria Barbara HOLLENBAUGH FESLER BLOSSER came to Richland Co., Ohio because it was where David’s half sister, Rebecca (FESLER) BLOSSER was and shortly after bought land in Jackson Twp., Seneca Co., Ohio where they lived for many years. An old Jackson Twp. History mentions that David DISINGER went to Richland Co. To reclaim his horses that had wandered back to his old home and came back with a bride (who was Sarah STRAUB MAY). William MAY , Sarah’s oldest son, remained in Richland Co., Ohio which may have some connection as to why Maria DYSINGER and Thomas Clark MCEWEN were married there many years later.”
Seneca County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions page 431 and 432: Maria B. DISINGER (FESLER) wife of Benjamin J. (FESLER) born about 1793, died in 1851 aged 58 years and is buried in plot 11 in DISINGER Cemetery, Jackson Twp., Seneca Co., OH. The DISINGER CEMETERY is in Section 8 near or on David DISINGER’S farm in Section 8. A note in the burial record mentions children Henry and David DISINGER. Note: the cemetery is located on Cole Road and Seneca County road No. 25. [CR25]

Excerpt from 1901 Reunion paper by Stephen A. Dysinger, David's grandson - "In the Spring of 1828, with their five children, their personal property packed in a covered wagon, with a four-horse team, they emigrated to Niagara County. The journey of about 500 miles was made in about 14 days. There were but few bridges, and often I have heard my father [Henry Dysinger], who was then seven years old, relate the exciting events of the trip. In fording the streams his legs would be in water to the knees as he sat astride the leader horse, where one false step would have engulfed horse, rider and all. Arriving here they settled on the farm ¾ mile north of here, then nearly covered with a dense growth of beech, maple, ash and oak in the midst was a small clearing with a log house and stable."
note- While following Indian trails from Pennsylvania to Niagara County, NY, the trip may have seemed like 500 miles, but it was closer to 400 miles. A journey of 400 miles in 14 days equals about 28 miles a day, whereas 400 miles in 30 days is about 14 miles a day, much more plausible for a horse-pulled wagon. Also, the first Disinger Reunion in 1901 was at Samuel Disinger's farm on Akron Rd. ¾ mile north of it puts David Dysinger's farm at the corner of Keck Rd. and Lincoln Ave. Ext. His farm is labeled on the 1852 Town of Royalton map.

Private David D. Disinger was in the Union Army, 150th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He served from 1861 to 1865, FamilySearch. David married Margret in 1896 and lived in Youngstown, OH, where he worked as a printer. David died about 35 years after the war and was interred in Youngstown, OH.
WikipediA - Indiana contributed approximately 210,000 Union soldiers, sailors, and marines. Indiana's soldiers served in 308 military engagements during the war; mostly in the western theater, between the Mississippi River and the Appalachian Mountains.
note- Considering his half-brother David Disinger (Jr) and family lived in Ohio, David D's burial in eastern Ohio seems more logical. However, they were on opposite sides of the state when he died. David D. likely lived in or near western Ohio at some point because he served in the Indiana Infantry, and he applied for a Civil War Pension in Indiana in 1890. Most of the Thomas Deissinger branch also lived in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana, so David D. could have lived near some of his cousins at some point before he moved to and then died in Youngstown.

✞Lockport Daily Journal, 17 December 1894 - SEYMOUR DYSINGER DIES UNDER SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. A Post Mortem Examination to be Held This afternoon - Seymour Dysinger who has for some time been employed at the Williams Stock Farm on Chestnut Ridge, died early this morning under slightly suspicious circumstances. Dysinger had been ailing for some time past, and last week Dr. Baker was called. The doctor left some medicine which Dysinger took and which seemed to make him feel better. Last Friday he went to Buffalo and when he returned he behaved in a very peculiar manner. Dr. Baker was again sent for about midnight last night and again left Dysinger some medicine, which, however, he did not take, and about 5 o'clock this morning he was found dead. A number of bottles of medicine bearing the labels of a Buffalo firm were found in the unfortunate man's room, and these may possibly lead to the cause of his death. Coroner Cleveland was called, and will go out and make a post-mortem examination this afternoon,

Gene Gavin was my uncle, my mother's younger brother. He passed away in early October. He was 84, would've been 85 in December on Christmas Day. He loved the Broadway theater, and lived in New York until his passing. This video was posted by his favorite group, "Dancers Over 40", which had slated him for the Legends award in December. I remember Gene practicing his dance moves in the basement of our home in Flint, Michigan when I was just a small boy. Rest in peace, Uncle Gene. I hope your final audition went well.

+John Hull - Hi, John! We are still going to honor Gene on December 7th! Richard Tuttle is flying in from Mexico to accept the award. Rita, his sister-in-law would like to come, but she is 86 and lives in Spokane. If her daughter could take her she would come. But we understand, it is a tough trip at that age! Look for pictures on our website and Facebook page about a week after the event! Also, check our website, as we put up an obit and one of the columns Gene wrote for our DO40 newsletter back in 2007. xoxo

I heard that Richard was going to do that. I'm grateful to your organization for recognizing his accomplishments and contributions to the arts in New York. I had the privilege of seeing him perform in the Nutcracker. Gene was ten years older than I, and I remember him practicing his dance moves in the basement of our home in Flint, MI when I was a small boy. So many memories as he floated in and out of my life.....

✞The Amherst Bee THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1918 - THOMAS WARWICK - On Sunday morning , Feb. 10, 1918, as day was brightening to noontime, the messenger of Death came and summoned Mr. Thomas Warwick to his eternal abode, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 15 days, after an illness of several weeks with heart trouble. The subject of this sketch was born on Nov. 25, 1839, son of the late Francis Warwick and Mary Moore Warwick on the farm where he passed away and where he spent his entire life. While he was yet a young boy his father died, which made it necessary for him to take up duties on the farm rather young, he being the oldest of a family of four, all of whom preceded him in death by several years. On March 12, 1872, Mr. Warwick was united in marriage to Miss Alice Hoyer. Two sons were born to them, Frank B. and James. The latter departed this life when two years old. The widow and one son, together with two grand-children who survive are given a memory of a most kind and loving father while his neighbors and many acquaintances lose a kind friend. The funeral services were held from his late home on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Rev. Bennett, who had charge of the services, selected his text from the fifth chapter of the book of St. John and spoke most comforting words to the sorrowing relatives. Messrs. William Clause, Herman Linstedt, Christ Kanehl, John Bars, Rudolph Gombert and William Linstedt, all old neighbors and former employees of the deceased, were chosen to bear the remains to their last resting place in the family plot in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. This world is but the rugged road which leads us to the bright abode of peace above.

✞The Medina [NY] Tribune Thursday, June 18, 1896 - Mrs. Jennie Franklin (nee Jennie Debbage) who died at her residence at Niagara Falls, was interred in the West Shelby cemetery Saturday last.
note- J. Ward Hoyer was listed in the 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, and 1875 censuses for Royalton, NY until he was 22/23. Also, a transcribed copy of the Hoyer's family bible lists his marriage to Jennie Debbage in 1875. After 1875, there's no other record of J. Ward except for his parents' obits, which indicated he lived in Niagara Falls before Jennie's death and in East St. Louis, MO, after her death. They are listed online at Cemeteries of Orleans County as interred in MT. Pleasant Cemetery, although only Jennie's date of death is given, not J. Ward's. Someone made FindAGrave memorials for both of them without any gravestones. Without further evidence, it seems Jennie divorced J. Ward and remarried Mr. Franklin before she died. J. Ward was in Tonawanda and returned to Orleans County by 1890 (see next). He must have left for East St Louis, MO, afterwards.

George appears in 2 censuses, first in 1850 with his father David at age 22 in Lockport, presumably on Keck Rd, and second in 1870 at 42 with his wife Elizabeth and her mother and brother John Beattie on Beattie Rd in Lockport. In the NYS 1875 Census for Lockport, Elizabeth, age 50, still lived with her brother John on Beattie Rd, but without her husband, George. So either George possibly died, or they separated. No obits were found for George or Elizabeth, and no FindAGrave memorials. They're likely interred in Dysinger Cemetery.
