Nicolaus' brother Johan George (John) Deissinger, mistaken for dead in the Revolutionary War, had presumably survived the war and had a farm in York County, Pennsylvania (see map below). York County is south of Harrisburg, PA, and between Cumberland County and Lancaster County, about 35-45 miles southwest of Berks County, PA, where Barthel's farm was. It's also where Johan Wilhelm, Nicolaus, and Johan George (John) were born in 1750, 1755, and 1757, respectively. Nicolaus moved to Cumberland County around 1785-86 before moving to Seneca County, NY. This may be about when Johan George (John) moved to York County. His second child, Catherine Deisinger, was born in 1793 in York County, as were the rest of his 8 children.
There is as yet no absolute proof that he is Barthel's grandson and Nicolaus' brother. However, going by names, dates, and locations, the presumption of this being the missing Johan George (John) appears to be likely correct. Also, Johan Wilhelm (William) left a will in 1822 written in German that mentions his brothers by name, John and Nicholas, whose children were to inherit his estate after Wilhelm's wife, Elizabeth, passed away.
After Nicolaus moved to Cumberland County and John moved to York County, they lived about 35 miles apart, making it difficult to stay in touch. By horse and wagon, that's more than a day's trip one way. In 1790, Nicolaus' youngest children were babies and likely didn't remember their Uncle John. In 1803, John died at 45/46, and Nicolaus' family eventually moved 200 miles away, and the memory of Uncle John presumably faded away.
In June 2017, Eric Dysinger's website listed Johan George (John) Deissinger as Barthel's grandson, living in York, PA, with 7 children, although Eric included only a few descendants beyond Johan George's (John) children. Eric may have gotten his information from FamilySearch.org, which had Johann George (John) Deissinger listed since about 2008. Unfortunately, Eric died in 2022, and his father, Eldon, died in 2024.
note- Even though William and Johan George (John) Deissinger reportedly served in the Colonial Army, there are no DAR/SAR records for either one of them (there are DAR/SAR records for a George Dissinger, but he was born in 1747, Germany, and died in 1816, Heidelberg, Lebanon County, PA, so he was likely from a different family). For William, it's not surprising that there are no DAR/SAR memberships since he apparently had no children. (see William's will above) However, Johan George (John) had 8 children and hundreds more descendants. Since Johan George (John) is not listed in DAR/SAR as a Colonial veteran, none of his descendants could have applied for DAR/SAR membership. The only difference seems to be that Nicolaus paid a supply tax in 1780, and his brothers did not. DAR/SAR recognizes the payments of these specific, non-penalized supply taxes as proof of "patriotic service" and acceptable for membership. Along with the other required documentation of birth, marriage, and death certificates for each generation, this might have prevented many descendants from applying or being accepted. The earliest known DAR member may be Eliza A. (Dysinger) Sprague, born in 1850, the granddaughter of George Disinger, Nicolaus's son, who lived in Holley, NY, and died in 1927. DAR does not provide the date of membership applications, so it's only a guess. See Nicolaus Deissinger for a full list of Deissinger DAR members.
In the Pennsylvania Archives Second Series, edited by John B. Linn and William H. Egle, M.D., Harrisburg, PA, 1880, there is a roster for the 6th Pennsylvania Regiment, Captain John McCowan's company, with a John Tisinger listed who deserted on 23 Feb 1778. This is nearly two years after Nicolaus and John's service in Captain John Lesher's company in 1776 (see Nicolaus Deissinger). The John Tisinger who deserted in 1778 may not have been Johan George (John) Deissinger, but it could have been him. Desertion was widespread in the Continental Army due to a variety of reasons, from bounty jumping (enlisting to just collect the bonus) to fear of combat. Thousands of rewards were advertised for deserters, and George Washington offered amnesty for offenders if they returned. The 6th Pennsylvania Regiment was recruited from Philadelphia City, Berks, Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia Counties. The regiment spent the winter of 1777–78 at Valley Forge, where an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 soldiers died from disease, and 1,000 to 2,000 soldiers deserted. George Washington threatened severe punishment, including execution of deserters.
To avoid getting caught, John might have moved far enough away that his neighbors wouldn't know who he was and turn him in. If John had deserted and moved to York County to hide, people at home in Berks County might have thought he died in service, although his brothers would have known since John and his children were mentioned in his brother William's will in 1822 (see above). John may not have told his children or grandchildren about his service/desertion, so none of them or their descendants would have considered DAR membership. That means that John and his brothers would have had to lie and cover up for the rest of their lives. However, if John had stayed away from his family and friends in Berks County and focused solely on his own family and farm in York County, nearly 50 miles away, he might have had some kind of peace until his death at 46 in 1803. Other than the roster mentioned above, no absolute proof of this could be found, so none of this may be true.
Library of Congress- Portion of 1860 Shearer's map of York County, Pennsylvania
Johan George (John) Deissinger's 140-acre homestead is highlighted above, south of the town of Dover, off of S. Salem Church Road. Three miles to the south, off the same road, Bott Cemetery is highlighted, where Johan George's (John) wife Anna Maria and his children Jacob and Susanna are interred, but not Johan George (John). Highlighted to the north, closer to Dover, is the Salem Union (Strayer's) Cemetery, where about a dozen Deisingers are interred, but again, not Johan George (John).
The J. Deisinger highlighted on the east side of the map, off Taxville Road in West Manchester Township, was George Jacob Deisinger's homestead (see below). The homestead highlighted and labeled Mrs. Deisinger on the west side of the map, on Pine Road in Jackson Township, was Jacob Deisinger's widow, Salome/Sarah (see below). At the time of Jacob's death, he was living in Paradise Township to the west. In the 1860 US Census for Jackson Township, York, Barbara (Deisinger) Shaffer, with her blacksmith husband and children, was living next to/with Salome/Sarah Deisinger and her 4 children after her husband had died.
There are old farmhouses at all three locations, but they're too far from the road to see them on Google Street View, and realtors don't have photos of them either. Additionally, it is notable that they're all listed as having been constructed coincidentally in 1900, implying that Johan George's (John) grandchildren or great-grandchildren may have built them, rather than his sons.
►Jacob Deissinger: click to expand/collapse
On FamilySearch.org and FindAGrave.com, Jacob Deisinger/Diesinger is listed, as living in Manchester Township, York County, PA, about 4-5 miles from Johan George (John) Deissinger. He was born in 1835 to Harvey Deisinger, married to Sarah Jane Sechrist, and had 6 children: Jacob, Martha Ann, Henry, Edward, Emma, and Sarah Deisinger. Despite the similar names, location, and dates, Jacob, his family, and his father do not seem to be connected to this Disinger family. The combination of them can not be found in this Disinger family tree, although their entire branch has only 16 people. Unless Harvey Deisinger happens to be a lost/unknown son, they were apparently a separate Deisinger family who also immigrated to Pennsylvania around the same time. On a like note, there is also a Dissinger family from Ephrata, PA, about 20 miles south of Barthel's farm, with whom Frank Disinger had communicated, and together the two families decided they were not related.

However, there are no FindAGrave memorials/gravestones for them. There are also a dozen memorials for other Deisinger relatives in the same cemetery. There are death certificates for John and Jacob that indicate their parents were John and Anna Deisinger.

✞Sarah's death certificate (on FindAGrave) states she was an invalid in the York City Almshouse and the widow of John Tritt. Her father's name was Michael Deisinger. Her mother's name was Catherine Berkheimer. She died on 27 Nov 1926 of chronic myocarditis and chronic nephritis and was interred in Greenmount Cemetery, York, PA, with her son John and daughter-in-law.
✞In 1860, John was a boatman presumably living in Berks County, Pennsylvania, but he is not found with any certainty in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Reading, Berks County, August 14, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. E, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry. On January 1, 1864, he re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer at Decherd, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company July 15, 1865. John married Sarah A. LNU and fathered two children, names unknown. He moved to York County where he took up the occupation of cigar making and became a member of Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R. Known to be "addicted to the use of strong drink," on May 2, 1893, he celebrated his fifty-first birthday by getting drunk and fighting with a "Dutchman" named Wilhelm Meyer. Sometime later, John began spitting blood profusely and was dead within a few hours. A coroner's inquest ruled the official cause of death to be a "deceased [sic] right lung." On May 9, 1893, Sarah applied for a widow's pension for John's military service and received it.

✞Richard Krout March 24, 1942 – November 2, 2020 - Richard was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, only son of Vincent and Gladys Krout. He graduated from Susquehanna Township High School. He went on to graduate with a degree in Business Administration from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where he made several life long friends. Richard spent the majority of his professional career working for Masland Industries of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he achieved the title of Vice President of Procurement and Supplies. Upon retirement at the young age of 53, Richard and his wife Connie relocated to Park City, Utah, where he enjoyed an active outdoor lifestyle, spending his time playing golf, biking, and downhill skiing. Dick and Connie loved adventure, planning ski trips all over the continental US and Canada, enjoying terrain on 3 different continents, to include helicopter skiing in Canada. Dick will be remembered as being exceptionally kind, a big teddy bear. He loved to help people (both known and unknown to him) and host friends and family at his Park City house. His favorite pleasure was not only to guide people to the best untracked ski runs and secret stashes of powder in Utah, but also to spend time with beginner skiers on simpler runs as well. He had limitless determination and patience in teaching everyone, never angry or frustrated. He loved to spend time and weekends with his wife and 2 children on the slopes of Denton Hil in the winter and along the Susquehanna River in the summer. In his older years he also enjoyed teaching his young granddaughters how to fish (and many fishing ties later!). His overall kind demeanor and larger than life presence will be missed. Richard is survived by his wife Constance Marie Krout (Osman), son Richard Eugene Krout II, daughter Wendy Krout Day, daughter-in-law Laura Krout (Buglio), son-in-law Christian Laurence Day, and granddaughters Sydney Lauren Day, Nicole Rebecca Day, and Danielle Victoria Day.
✞Parents: Beatrice Ossman Pelachick, but was raised by her stepfather, Theodore Pelachick. Connie graduated from Pottsville High School. She quickly moved on to independently support herself as a telephone operator until she met her soulmate and husband of fifty-five years, Richard Eugene Krout. They lived in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for a few short years, then built their Pennsylvania dream house in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania. There she raised her children and built deep-seated roots, with many lasting friendships and many adventures, spending numerous days playing tennis at Allenberry Resort and Inn. She spent those years as a wonderful wife and homemaker for their two children, packing up for weekends spent skiing at Denton Hill or boating on the Susquehanna River in the summer. After Richard's retirement, they built their western dream house in Park City, Utah, where they spent twenty-five years. There, Connie developed even more deep and lasting friendships, spending her time snow skiing, playing golf, traveling the world or just spending quality time with friends. Anyone who knew her was familiar with Hotel Krout, as she absolutely loved to host and entertain people. She so enjoyed spending time with her three granddaughters when they visited, teaching them to ski and play golf, taking them to rodeos, and, most importantly, grilling the Krout Special Rack of lamb and homemade soup. Anyone who knew Connie loved her. She was a brightly sparkling personality that could start a conversation with anyone, a skill that astounded those around her. She loved to push boundaries, and was never afraid to wear just about anything to a party, no matter what her age. Her adventuresome and winning personality, her emotional strength to keep pushing through no matter how her body challenged her will be legacies that will live on. Connie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard; and her half-brother, Ted Pelachick. She is survived by her half-brother, Edward Pelachick; her children, Richard Eugene Krout, Jr. and Wendy Krout Day; her daughter-in-law, Laura Krout, her son-in-law, Christian Day; and her granddaughters, Sydney Lauren Day, Nicole Rebecca Day, and Danielle Victoria Day.

✞Frederick C. Heiges, 88, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at his residence. He was the loving husband of the late Diane (Bufflap) Heiges, to whom he was married 50 years. Born May 25, 1930 in York, he was the son of the late Alvin C. and Beatrice (Frederick) Heiges.
Fred was a 1948 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and was active in football, swimming, tennis, ping pong and politics. He graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College with majors in English and history. Frederick played football and lettered in varsity tennis. He graduated from Western Maryland College earning an Ed. M degree with a major in psychology and a minor in counselling. He attended Penn State York and later compiled enough credits for a Doctoral equivalency earning certification requirements for Home-school visitor, psychological examiner, guidance counselor and school psychologist. During this time, Fred enjoyed selected private work and vocational testing to include complete battery testing for Scotland School, Hershey Boys School, Hoffman Home, Sheltered Workshop, and the York County Mental Health Center.
He was affiliated with the office of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) and worked as a Psychological examiner for the Disability Determination Division. At CDC, Fred was involved in the psychological testing of residents, working with staff and setting-up behavioral management plans for each client. For a brief time, he served as the acting Executive Director of Provident Enterprises, counseling parents and developed in-service programs with staff, nurses, and mental health workers. As a school psychologist with York City, Fred helped initiate, develop and supervise special classes and curriculum for exceptional individuals, consulting with teachers and supervisors about the progress. It was also his duty to make appropriate referrals for further diagnostic evaluations e.g., to speech therapists, reading specialists, clinical psychologists and neurologists for further services. He was in position to encourage community support of financial requests for needed psychological services and to encourage state and federal assistance for the development of services.
As a Psychologist with the Lincoln Intermediate Unit, a substantial portion of his time was spent in the collaboration, consultation and conference with school personnel on enhancing the learning potential of school-age pupils. There's one possibility, though, that seems to fit all the facts. There was a hint in one text that Johan George (John) may have deserted the militia in 1776. To avoid getting caught, he might have moved away where his neighbors wouldn't know who he was and turn him in. Desertion was widespread in the Continental Army due to a variety of reasons, from bounty jumping (enlisting to just collect the bonus) to fear of combat. Thousands of rewards were advertised for deserters, and George Washington offered amnesty for offenders if they returned.
If John had deserted and moved to York County to hide, people in Berks County might have thought he died in service (although his brothers should have known, which might explain why he was named in his brother William's will). John may not have told his children or grandchildren, so none of them or their descendants would have considered DAR membership. That means that John and his brothers would have had to lie and cover up for the rest of their lives. John, particularly, would have had to not tell anyone. However, if John had stayed away from his family and friends in Berks County and focused solely on his own family and farm in York County, nearly 50 miles away, he might have had some peace until his death at 46 in 1803. No proof of this could be found, so none of this may have happened, but it does seem a little suspicious.
