note- Elizabeth married Henry Ernest, and her Uncle George's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Ernest. While they were both born in Pennsylvania, and a lot of Ernst/Ernest were in PA, most of them were immigrants from Germany in the early 1700s, they do not seem to be directly related other than they married Disinger cousins. While Henry Ernest's family is well documented on FamilySearch, going back to 1450 in Germany, John Ernest's parents are unknown. Elizabeth's mother, her father's second wife, Catharine Ernest, was her husband Henry Ernest's first cousin, meaning that Elizabeth married her first cousin once removed.

8623 Ernest Rd, built 1900
This was the approximate location of Elizabeth (Dysinger) and Henry Ernest's farm. Since Elizabeth was in her 80s when this was built, this may not have been her house but one of her children's. On the 1875 Town of Royalton map, there were 2 adjacent houses labeled for H. Ernest, so some of their children were likely living here also.

7531 Ridge Road, Hartland, NY, demoed sometime after 2023. The building on the left was likely the Checkered Tavern before it became a residence. The smaller building was presumably Branch's Store.
***LOCKPORT. N. Y.. UNION-SUN & JOURNAL. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1953 - In 1829 John Lowber settled on a large tract of land on north side of the Ridge [Rt 104]. Tavern keeping was still a profitable business, so he built a tavern which is still standing. It was a frame building and when the time came to paint it Mr. Lowber wanted to have it one color and his wife had her mind set on another color. Finally, they compromised and painted it in alternate blocks of both colors. Thereafter, it became known as the Checkered Tavern and many years later a road was laid intersecting the Ridge on Lowber's west line. It was named the Checkered Tavern Road. An old record in this office indicates in a vague way that the color scheme of the tavern was red and white. It was a regular stop for the stage coaches. Sometime soon after the Civil War the tavern was discontinued and it has been used only as a residence since. Roger Branch lives there now and he kindly showed me around the house. Only in the cellar are the earmarks of the 1820's visible. The floor joists are logs just adzed [flat axed] flat on the upper side, the visible parts still having the bark on them. There was one large fireplace in the cellar in the olden days. It is now bricked up. In 1835 Mr. Lowber either sold or defaulted on his payments so that David E. Evans, agent for the Holland Land Company, became the owner. He sold it in 1842. The last proprietor recorded was A. B. Nicholls in 1851. He was not the owner, however. The Checkered Tavern Road was not laid out until after 1856 according to County Clerk records. According to stories I have from old residents, it was in Civil War days a gathering place for the rougher element of the area. I am indebted to Anson D. Chaplin, Justice of the peace of Hartland, as well as to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shaw and Roger Branch and Fred Alexander of the County clerk's Office for their help in preparing this article.
***UNION-SUN & JOURNAL Lockport, N. Y., Wednesday, March 17, 1971 - Boy, 15, Faces Hartland Store Robbery Count - State Police in Wrights Corners arrested a 15-year-old Town of Lockport youth and charged him with juvenile delinquency in connection with the armed robbery of Branch's Store, 7531 Ridge Road, Town of Hartland Friday. Troopers said Investigator Ralph D. Fuller was able to track down the youth on the basis of descriptions gathered from Mr. and Mrs. Roger Branch, owners of the store. The boy was turned over to the Youth Detention Center at the Niagara Coun'y Sheriff's Department pending an appearance in Family Court. Troopers said a "boy," armed with a pistol, entered the Hartland store about 8 p.m. Friday and made off with $70 in cash.

✞Martha Elizabeth Monsson finally lost her gallant six year battle with multiple myeloma cancer on February 20, 2014. Martha was a courageous, brilliant, and unique lady. She was born in Boston, MA, May 11, 1954 where her father was a graduate student at Harvard University. She grew up in Honolulu, where her father taught medieval history at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She majored in Geology at the University of Wyoming where she met her future husband, George. She worked as a geologist in Wyoming and then returned to Laramie to attend law school, graduating in 1988. Martha was a shining example of a life well lived and was well loved. A list of her specific talents, achievements, and interests would take far too much space but they included being a very talented spinner and weaver, author, scholar, black belt in Tae Kwon Do, geologist, attorney, historian, lecturer, embroiderer, accomplished cook with a specialty in medieval and renaissance foods, cave explorer, hiker, camper, traveler, seamstress, miniaturist, teacher, calligrapher, engaging conversationalist, captivating storyteller, loving mother, cherished wife, and, above all, fiercely true and brave. Martha laughed easily and often. Her distinctive and infectious laugh is something that will be particularly missed. She was a great and good friend to many people. Nearly everyone who met her, even briefly, learned something from her. Even in the last months of her life she continued to engage with the world. In November, 2013 PBS News Hour broadcast an interview with her regarding the Affordable Care Act. Her passing was noted on national television on PBS. She continued to do legal research up until a week before her death. On her last day she continued to research and take notes for a planned academic paper. Martha is survived by her beloved husband and son, George and Thomas, her brothers Jonathan and Paul Ernest of Hideaway, Texas, and her numerous beloved cats. Mark her memory well. We shall not see her like again. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 8th, at St. Charles Episcopal Church, 505 E. 8th Ave., Fort Morgan, CO. Martha would have preferred donations to an animal shelter instead of flowers.
