C. Elizabeth "Betsey" (Disinger) Frantz was the only child of Johannes Deissinger to leave the Seneca County, NY area and move to Niagara County. However, she was near many of her Disinger cousins, her home on Keck Rd being less than a mile from her first cousin, John Deacon Disinger's farm on Bulmore Rd. Their farms likely bordered each other. Her descendants continued living on their farm for about 150 years. ➖ Elmer C. Harpst, C. Elizabeth's great-grandson, was killed in action during WWI. He was buried in France, but he has a gravestone in Royalton. ➖ Sophia (Harpst) Miller, Elmer's sister, married Fred Miller, whose sisters married two Disinger brothers, George Disinger II and Isaac Disinger, ➖ Jacob Frantz, C. Elizabeth's son, responded to a British military threat in 1837 on the Niagara River. ➖ William F. Tolhurst, C. Elizabeth's great-grandson, was a Coast Guard veteran, public servant, and renowned, award-winning bloodhound dog trainer. He gave a presentation at the 2002 Disinger Reunion.

5669 Keck Rd, built 1845
This is the likely location of John and C. Elizabeth (Disinger) Frantz's home in the Town of Lockport. This property is labeled J. C. Frantz on 1852 and 1860 Niagara County maps. Looking at the obits below for C. Elizabeth's son Daniel, grandson Clifford, and great-granddaughter Helen (Covell) Ranney Middaugh, who died in 1998, each one lived on the Keck Rd. farm. This means the Frantz family had occupied this property for roughly 150 years.

HARPST WAS A WILLING HERO - Former Johnnycake Boy Was Hoping to Soon Return When When He Gave Up His Life - BROTHER TELLS WAR WORK - WINSOME WORKERS GUESTS TONIGHT OF GUILD - BUÇK-WHEAT AND GRAIN THRESHED THIS WEEK. - JOHNNY CAKE RIDGE, Nov. 6. It was with deepest regret that local people learned of the death in France on Sept. 27th of Private Elmer C. Harpst of Co. A. 358th Infantry. Private Harpst leaves many sorrowing friends in this community where he had been employed and frequently visited. In one of his letters to local friends, dated August 31, he wrote: "I hope to see you all some day. which wont be very long as we are going to show those Huns what the Yankee boys can do. We have a Y. M.C.A. which just opened up yesterday and it seems good to see them again." Private Harpst answered the call most willingly and seemed proud to be having a part in what he called "the great work over there." Even in his very dangerous position, as stretcher bearer, he always wrote cheering letters and never failed to express his appreciation of the services rendered by the Y.M.C.A.

After marrying in 1912, Fred and Sophia with 3 children started by renting a farm in Royalton a few miles from his parents. By 1930 with 2 more children Fred had moved his family to Gasport while working at a basket factory. In 1940 he was still working at the basket factory and his first cousin once removed Gorman Kleinhans lived one house away from him on East Ave in Gasport. Several years later, Fred obtained a job at the Harrison Radiator Division and moved to Lockport in 1949. After working 15 years at HRD, Fred retired and a few years later passed away in 1960. After her husband Fred died, Sophia moved to (West) Palm Beach, Florida where her daughter Doris, son Warren, and grandchildren lived. Donald Trump's Mar-a-Largo is less than a mile east of the West Palm Beach mainland coast. Fred and Sophia had 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and over 20 great-grandchildren. Fred's 2 youngest sons graduated with college degrees. Between Arizona, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, several cities in Florida, and Rochester, Medina, Middleport, Wolcottsville, and Lockport in New York the Miller family certainly had the country covered.
note- As a side note, Jacob Miller, Sophia's father-in-law, had two sisters who married two Disinger brothers from nearby Disinger's Corner. Anna Mary Miller married George Disinger II on 17 Oct 1843 in Royalton and had fifteen (15) children. Christina Miller married Isaac Disinger on 18 Oct 1843 in Royalton and had six (6) children. The two sisters' father-in-law, George Disinger, had 13 children with more than 1,100 descendants. Sophia was the great-granddaughter of C. Elizabeth (Disinger) Frantz from Royalton, a 2nd cousin to George Disinger, and a 3rd cousin to George II and Isaac Disinger. Jacob Miller almost certainly took his son Fred and family to visit his Disinger nephews and nieces (sisters' children) shortly after he married Augusta (Kleinhans) around 1875. Jacob had property dealings with the Disinger family as well.

✞Lester Laverne “Bumpas” Miller December 30, 1918 – April 26, 2011 Lester Laverne Miller, known to all as Bumpas, died on April 26, 2011 in Oklahoma City. He was born to Fred Willard Miller and Sophia Lucinda Harpst Miller in Royalton, New York on December 30, 1918.
Bumpas earned a BS degree from Rider College in New Jersey and served as a Navigator in the Pacific Theater for the Army Air Corps from 1943 – 1945, when he left the service as a First Lieutenant. His decorations included the distinguished Flying Cross, the Asiatic Theater, Campaign Ribbon, and the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. He had a successful career as a professional sales representative for several companies until his retirement in 1983.
He met Bettye Kathryn Nichols in Albuquerque in April 1945 and they were married on September 16th of that year in Oklahoma City. They were married for 65 years and had five children, Gayle Patricia Miller, who died shortly after birth, Fred Luther Miller, Dick Warren Miller, Anne Marie Miller Cook and Paul Roy Miller. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, where he and Bettye treasured the congregation and its music ministry. He was a long time Oklahoma City resident, an active youth baseball and basketball coach, an enthusiastic golfer who found more balls than he lost, and a lifelong avid fisherman who did not consider an empty stringer to be the sign of a bad day. He shared his love of the outdoors with thirty year fishing buddy, Brian Hall, for whom a weekend of fishing all day, eating peanut crackers and sleeping in a boat was a grand adventure. Bumpas was a dusk-to-dawn fisherman, a schedule we thought he would be unable to maintain on his summer trips to Alaska. We were wrong.
Bumpas was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Elmer and Roger as well as daughter Gayle Patricia. He is survived by his wife Bettye, brother Warren (Pete), sister Doris, sons Fred, Dick and Paul, daughter Anne, grandchildren Joshua Gillespie Miller, Lester Carr Miller, Jessica Jordan Miller, (children of Fred and wife Linda Gillespie Miller), Kevin Roy Miller and Alexis Joyce Leighanne Miller Henderson (children of Dick and wife Lindsey Nellie Paula Shuster Miller), Jason Lee Cook and Jacquelynn Anne Cook French (children of Anne and husband Vern Lee Cook) and Gary Simer (son of Paul and wife Donna Simer) and great grandchildren Luther Miller, Julian Miller, Alexander Miller, Ava Cook, Aidan French, Jenna French and Avery Simer. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, at 5:00 at Guardian Funeral Home’s West Chapel, 5820 N.W. 41st Street in Oklahoma City.
✞Bettye Kathryn Nichols Miller passed away on September 13, 2012 in Eugene, Oregon. She was born to Luther Thomas Nichols and Lola Alice Burns Nichols in Fort Smith, Arkansas on July 8, 1920.
Bettye was a graduate of Classen High School and attended the Oklahoma College for Women and Oklahoma State University. She taught at business schools in Oklahoma City, but most of her professional life was spent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where she began work as a stenographer and ended her career as Supervisor of the Stenographic Pool, one of the most senior FBI positions available to women at that time.
She met Lester Laverne Miller in Albuquerque in April 1945 and they were married on September 16th of that year in Oklahoma City. They were married for 65 years and had five children, Gayle Patricia Miller, who died shortly after birth, Fred Luther Miller, Dick Warren Miller, Anne Marie Miller Cook and Paul Roy Miller. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, where she and Les treasured the congregation and its music ministry.
Bettye was a modern working mother before her time. As a wife, she was Lester's strong life partner in a journey that started with a whirlwind courtship in Albuquerque, and a frozen fishing trip honeymoon in New York which set the stage for a 65 year marriage that was a model for all of us. As a mother, she balanced the demands of work, baseball, basketball, softball and football games, clubs, church and social activities all without a microwave. Her collection of crock pot dinner and casserole recipes was legendary. As a professional, she worked for the FBI in Washington, El Paso and Oklahoma City, where she served on the field office management team. She also served on the FBI team investigating the Kennedy assassination in Dallas. At a time when being a professional woman was fraught with difficulties and obstacles; she handled them all with grace, fairness, firmness and strength.
Bettye was a lifelong sports fan who especially enjoyed baseball games as well as Oklahoma State and Dallas Cowboy football games. She watched baseball with a scorecard and claimed that the reason she married Les was that he took her to baseball games. If there had been opportunities for girls to play sports when she was young, she would have been an avid softball player. She would also have enjoyed natural advantages in any sport where she could use her sharp elbows on opponents and sharp tongue on officials.
Bettye's natural curiosity, desire to learn, and incredible sense of humor never ceased. Despite being affected by dementia in her later years she always challenged herself mentally. Bettye never quit trying to be better and never complained about the difficulties she encountered.
Her sharp wit remained intact and her love of family was an inspiration to all. Bettye's last year was spent at Sheldon Park Memory Care Unit in Eugene, Oregon. She earned the respect and love of all her caregivers who quickly realized that the way to her heart was feeding her chocolate and coffee.
Bettye loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed being near water. Though a legendary fishing experience on her honeymoon soured her on that pastime, she loved swimming, boating and picnicking by lakes. She and Les toured the country extensively, particularly enjoying the beauty of national parks in the American West. Bettye especially looked forward to her annual trips to Las Vegas with her sister Margaret. Together, they would do their best to improve the Las Vegas economy and in the process thoroughly enjoyed each other's company. Those were special times for both of them.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband Lester Miller; her brother Robert Nichols; and her daughters Anne Marie Miller Cook and Gayle Patricia Miller.
She is survived by her sister Margaret Kocher; sons Fred, Dick and Paul; grandchildren Joshua Gillespie Miller, Lester Carr Miller, Jessica Jordan Miller, (children of Fred and wife Linda Gillespie Miller), Kevin Roy Miller and Alexis Joyce Leighann Miller Henderson (children of Dick and wife Lindsey Nellie Paula Shuster Miller), Jason Lee Cook and Jacquelynn Anne Cook French (children of her daughter Anne and husband Vern Lee Cook) and Gary Simer and Rodney Robertson (sons of Paul and wife Donna Simer); and great grandchildren Luther Miller, Victor Miller, Julian Miller, Alexander Miller, Lucy Henderson, Ava Cook, Aidan French, Jenna French, Avery Simer, Grace Simer and Braden Robertson.

✞July 10, 1953 - May 17, 2011 OKLAHOMA CITY Anne Marie Miller Cook, went to be with her Lord on May 17, 2011 in Oklahoma City. She was born to Lester Laverne Miller and Bettye Kathryn Nichols Miller in Dallas, Texas on July 10, 1953. Her last days were brightened by the personal and professional attention of hospice nurse Angela Nicholson.
Anne was a graduate of Classen High School, attended college and business college for two years and was an Air Force veteran. She held several professional positions in management and sales and, most recently, served for five years as Administrative Assistant in the Parking Services Department at the University of Oklahoma. Her record in parking operations at OU home football games was 31 wins no losses.
She met Davern Lee Cook at Blackwood Business College in Oklahoma City and they were married on September 20, 1975 in Lester and Bettye's home in Oklahoma City, with Davern's father, Eli Cook, presiding. They were married for 35 years and had three children, Jason Lee Cook, Jacquelynn Anne Cook French and Travis Lee Hoelscher. She accepted Christ in her life through the ministry of Nate Cook, her nephew, Pastor of the Community Church of the Nazarene.
Anne was a Master Gardener, whose lawn and yard always reflected her love of bright colors and beautiful flowers. She was the glue of the family, organizing extended family reunions and preparing birthday and holiday dinners renowned for their flavor and abundance. Every such event was topped off by one or more of her homemade fruit pies (her best were cherry and rhubarb) for which she was a family legend. On her favorite days she hosted such a feast at the Cove on Lake Arbuckle, with parents, brothers, sisters, children, nieces and nephews fishing, swimming, laughing, enjoying the feast and each others's company. Supposedly there is always room for jello, but that was NOT true after Anne's holiday dinners.
Anne was preceded in death by her sister, Gayle Patricia Miller and her father, Lester. ✞June 1, 2016 - Paul Roy Miller died on June 1 from injuries sustained in a profession he loved. He was born on August 26, 1958 in Oklahoma City to Bettye Katheryn Nichols Miller and Lester Laverne Miller (Bumpas senior).
Paul and his cherished wife, Donna Simer Miller, met in 1988 and built a life together in Big Spring, Texas. They loved taking family vacations, spending time with friends and family, enjoying their menagerie of pets and loving on their grandchildren.
He was a native Oklahoman who graduated from Oklahoma State University and entered the dynamic oil field supply business where his superb people skills, independent thinking and problem solving were the foundation of his success for over 30 years. His work brought him to West Texas, which quickly became his beloved home. His contacts in the oil fields also exposed him to the colorful vocabulary he employed so creatively when he missed a bass strike or a golf shot went awry.
Paul was larger than life. Physically he was an imposing figure, but his heart and spirit were even bigger. He lived life with enthusiasm, friendliness and joy. When Paul gave you a bear hug, you knew that you were well and truly loved, as all who knew him can attest. He was a steadfast friend, a loving husband, father, son and brother. He was also a devoted, doting Bumpas (grandfather) to his grandchildren, with whom he shared some of his happiest moments.
Paul loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed sharing outdoor adventures with family and friends. He also relished weekends devoted to the Texas trinity of football, car racing and good food. The first two passions he inherited from his mother, who had rather unusual tastes for her generation, and the third from his father, who never met a meal he didn’t like.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Simer Miller, his parents, and his sisters Anne Marie Miller Cook and Gayle Patricia Miller.
He is survived by brothers Fred Luther Miller (wife Linda Gillespie Miller) and Dick Warren Miller (wife Lindsey Shuster Miller), sons Gary Simer (wife Julie Adams Simer) and Rodney Robertson (wife Michele Robertson), and seven grandchildren. Candyce, Mica, Dalton, Avery, Braydon, Grace, and Brevynn and numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was a member of the First Christian Church. His passing will leave a huge hole in our lives, hearts and community, but our lives will be forever touched by having shared his.
Visitation will be at the Myers and Smith Funeral Home and Chapel, 301 East 24th Street, Big Spring, TX on Monday, June 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be at the First Christian Church, 911 Goliad, Big Spring, TX, on Tuesday, June 7, at 4:00 PM. The family requests that memorials be in the form of contributions to the education funds for Paul’s grandchildren. Donations should be sent to fund administrator, Gary Simer, 3141 High Meadows Drive, Abilene, TX 79605.

✞Frantz - The funeral of Jacob Frantz was held from his late home on the Akron road, Town of Lockport, on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the Rev. M. G. Rietz of the English Lutheran church officiating. A large number of relatives and friends attended the services to pay their last respect to Mr. Frantz. The bearers were six nephews; Frank Nerber, Curtis and William Gregory, Arthur Sanford, Millard Frantz and Roy Wisterman. Interment was made in Chestnut Ridge cemetery.
note- Jacob Frantz's farm on Akron Rd. was just 1/3 of a mile west of Samuel A. Disinger's farm. (see Maps and Locations) Jacob and Samuel, besides being farmers about the same age on the same road, shared the same great-grandfather, Nicolaus Deissinger, making them second cousins.
*** THE LOCKPORT JOURNAL, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1902 Jacob Frantz of the Akron Road, who has one of the finest farms and farm residences in Niagara county, has a force of workmen and carpenters building a large and well appointed pig sty. It is 16x24 feet; 2 stories high, with first floor grouted. When completed it will be one of the best pig sties in the county. Mrs. Frantz was born on that farm in 1840. She was the daughter of Daniel Bosserman, who settled on that farm in 1836 and then lived in a log house that had previously been built there. He did most of the clearing of the timber from the farm, which contained 100 acres. In 1837 he, with others hereabouts, was called out to take up arms and go to Niagara Falls to repel the British who set the steamer Caroline on fire on Niagara river, an account of which appears in the Pioneer Souvenir History recently issued by the Lockport Journal.
*** The Caroline Incident during the Patriot War - Fear of war with England cropped up in 1837 as a result of a rebellion in Canada called the Patriot War. The rebels, led by William L. MacKenzie, fled to Navy Island [An island owned by Canada, located off the northwest corner of Grand Island] near the American shore of the Niagara River, where they set up headquarters. Popular support on the American side of the border was strong as open efforts were made to raise funds and recruit men. The British government naturally demanded action to suppress such flagrant actions.
On December 29, a little steamer, the Caroline, was hired at Buffalo to ferry goods from the American shore to Navy Island. During the course of the night, several boatloads of armed men crossed the river from Canada. They seized the steamer, killing one man, towed her into the middle of the river, and, setting her afire, sent her blazing down the rapids toward Niagara Falls.
The war scare which followed resulted in the dispatching of army troops under Gen. Winfield Scott to the border at Buffalo where a military installation, the Poinsett Barracks, was constructed between Allen and North Streets on the east side of Delaware Avenue. It remained there until the 1840s, when it was replaced by a fort [Fort Porter] on the Niagara River opposite Fort Erie.
*** THE NIAGARA DEMOCRAT, LOCKPORT JULY 7, 1905 Jacob Frantz received the intelligence of the death of one of his nephews who was thrown from a horse and instantly killed. Mr. Frantz called on H. Wisterman to have himself and wife accompany himself and daughter to the home of the nephew.
note- Jacob's sister Eliza married a Wisterman but the nephew who died is unknown. update- There is a small unmarked gravestone with the rest of the Wichtermans in the Dysinger Cemetery that could be the unknown nephew.

►Oral History w/photos: click to expand/collapse
There are 3 oral history audio recordings of William Tolhurst at the New York Heritage- Nioga Library System website. You can read the accompanying transcripts instead of listening. The first recording is mainly about his youth while living with his parents on Pine Street in Lockport. At the time in the 1930s when he was about 10-19, they had horses behind their home that he rode and cared for, which perhaps explains his extraordinary relationship with animals. He mentions that he would ride a horse from his Pine St home to Keck Rd, his mother's childhood home, where his Uncle Clifford still lived to help on the farm (see Homestead above). William said that by the time he was done with his military service in 1946, the farm had been sold. However, his Aunt Edna (Frantz) Covel and her daughter Helen (Covel) Middaugh appeared to continue living in the house until 1998. He also said he trapped animals for their fur in the area from Keck Rd to E. High St to Ernest Rd to Akron Rd, some 1,000 acres. William likely did not know his great-great-great-granduncle David Deissinger had once owned a farm on the corner of Keck and E High St, and his first-cousin twice removed, George Disinger, and granduncle Jacob Disinger had once owned farms on Akron Rd. No one bothered him about trapping because he said no one lived there, and all the roads were mud. He said the area was kind of a lover's lane where cars would drive out, get stuck in the mud, and they would come to the farm for help since there was nowhere else to go. His Uncle Cliff would let him use a team of horses to help the stuck drivers, which he said helped him pay for his first car.

✞EXPERT IN TRAINING POLICE DOGS APRIL 25, 1922 -- FEB. 7, 2005 By Staff Feb 12, 2005 buffalonews.com - Special Deputy William D. Tolhurst, chief of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department's Special Forces Unit and a world authority on training dogs for law enforcement, died Monday in his Lockport home after a short illness. He was 82. "His death is going to be felt throughout the entire law enforcement community," said Sheriff Thomas A. Beilein. "You couldn't help but be inspired by his dedication and drive. His legacy will be an inspiration to many officers." Special Deputy Tolhurst, known as Bill, joined the Sheriff's Department in 1956 and worked until he was hospitalized with cancer earlier this month.
"Bill was the foremost authority on bloodhounds and his contribution to law enforcement is immeasurable," said Special Deputy Don Burrows of the Sheriff's Department. He invented the Scent Transfer Unit, a "scent machine" the size of a small vacuum cleaner that transfers hidden smells at a crime scene onto steel gauze pads, which are then conveyed to a dog used to sniff out suspects or their weapons. The gauze pads can be frozen and used in future cases. The machine, which is used by law enforcement agencies worldwide, also has proven successful in tracking down lost children and Alzheimer's patients, Burrows said.
The dogs Special Deputy Tolhurst trained also were used in search and rescue, sniffing out both narcotics and people. He also trained Labrador retrievers to find old remains, a valuable asset in many cold cases, Burrows added. Beilein, who worked with Tolhurst since 1969, recalled Tolhurst and his bloodhound, Cleo, once followed disappearing footprints in the snow after an arson fire in a Boy Scout camp in the Town of Lockport. They led investigators right to the door of the suspects, who immediately confessed. In addition to starting the county's Special Forces Unit, Tolhurst founded the North American Search Dog Network and co-founded the National Police Bloodhound Association. He was a three-time past president of the association and wrote its first training manual. He also wrote the "Police Textbook for Dog Handlers" and "Cadaver Recovery for Law Enforcement."
The Lockport native was a graduate of Lockport High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942 and two years later went to sea in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After joining the Niagara County Sheriff's Department, he became a renowned author, lecturer and dog trainer for law enforcement agencies in many countries. He received numerous awards from police agencies in North America and Australia and appeared on several television shows over the years, including "60 Minutes" and "20/20."
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Natalie Calver of Lockport; two sons, Dean and Keith, both of Lockport; and a granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today in First Presbyterian Church, 21 Church St. Burial was in Cold Spring Cemetery.

7981 Akron Rd, Royalton, built 1900
By the 1900 US Census Charles, Eliza, and their son Roy seemed to move to this home from Charles' childhood home on Bunker Hill Rd, which his former brother-in-law Andrew Behe owned then. Charles may have used money inherited from his father's estate to buy or build this home. Charles' name is at this location on the 1908 Town of Royalton map. His son Roy's name is on the 1938 Town of Royalton map at this same location. It appears that Charles or Roy had purchased some of their neighbors' land and may have additionally purchased other farm property. Charles and Eliza's obits stated they lived in the Town of Lockport, not in Royalton. Roy's wife Jessie's obit mentioned she lived at 6851 Akron Road in the Town of Lockport. (see photo below) Rural farmers were attracted to houses in or near a city for the utilities and amenities. Sometimes, they sold their original farm or rented the house and continued farming the land, all or part of it. Charles, Roy, and the children likely lived at the Lockport home on and off at various times.
