with Andrew's mother
In 1890 Carrie and Andrew Truax with their family were living in Dysinger's Corner near the stone house, but they don't appear on a corresponding map. That was because they lived on Benjamin Truax's (Carrie's father) farm which was mislabeled on the 1908 Royalton map as C. Dysinger instead of B. Dysinger. On the 1938 Royalton map after Andrew and Carrie had died that same property belonged to Stella Truax, Andrew and Carrie's daughter-in-law with her husband Edward Truax. (see Edward Truax below)
In the 1900 US Census for Royalton, Andrew was listed with his wife Carrie, sons Edward and George, and his 80-year-old mother Caroline Truax. Andrew's mother seemingly switched living with him at his house in Royalton and her house in Middleport, NY. Disturbingly, Andrew's mother attempted to commit suicide according to a 1905 newspaper article (see below). The article mentioned they were in Middleport, near Grist Mill Creek since his mother tried to drown herself in the creek in the middle of the night. After failing to drown herself Andrew found her in the morning and took her to grandson Henry Truax's (Andrew's nephew) house nearby to recover. In the 1920 US Census for Royalton, there was a Peter Truax 74 y.o. on Hartland St., Middleport who was likely Andrew's brother. Also in the Census, 53-year-old Henry Truax was on Mill St. near Hartland St just north of the Erie Canal with a creek and a pond called Mill Pond nearby. Difficult to find, H. Truax is just visible on a 1908 Middleport map at 12 Mill St.

*** THE LOCKPORT JOURNAL THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1905. WAS TIRED OF LIFE THOUGH - NINETY-ONE YEARS OLD TRIES TO TAKE IT - Aged Middleport Woman made three Alleged Attempts to End Her Life and Failed - Cut Throat, Haggled Wrist, then Jumped into Creek. - Mrs. Caroline Truax, a widow residing in Middleport for the last 30 to 40 years, and now 91 years of age, tried three times during Wednesday night to take her own life, but failed in each instance. She first secured the razor of her son Andrew Truax, who lives with and cares for her, and tried to cut her throat. She inflicted a deep wound, but it failed to produce death. She then tried to end her life by cutting an artery in her wrist with the razor, but again failed to cut deep enough to allow her lifeblood to escape. Later in the night she arose from her bed and left the house unbeknown to her son, who is deaf, and jumped into the Grist Mill creek at a point near her home. The water in the creek is about five feet deep and she could easily have drowned in it. She, however, apparently did not find drowning an easy enough death and clambered out of the water onto the bank where she lay until about 5 o'clock this morning, when she was found there by her son Andrew. She was taken to the home of her grandson, Henry Truax, nearby, and physicians are today trying to save her life, which is threatened by her night's exposure.

Lance Truax grew up on Dewhirst Road in the Town of Royalton, was a 1976 graduate of Royalton Hartland Central School, and was cited as a hero by the Highlands County Commission for his act of heroism and bravery. He served as a paramedic for Highlands County Emergency Medical Services for 27 years. His home is in Sebring, Florida.
On July 17, 1997, twelve years ago, he and his crew responded to a call for help from a crippled Lear jet approaching Avon Park airport. The plane veered into power lines and onto the north side of a busy state highway where it crashed. According to Highlands County Sheriff’s detective Ken Vincent, Lance scaled a fence, ran through an environment of burning jet fuel, diesel fuel, gasoline, and other toxic substances. He dodged burning grass, aircraft debris and wreckage of equipment struck by the plane, helped the co-pilot crawl to safety and then physically assisted the pilot out of the aircraft and to safety. Lance suffered from smoke inhalation, some minor cuts and burns during the rescues.
Following his citation he retained his modest attitude that his action was not heroism but “part of the job”. Since his “retirement” in 2008 he is engaged in the Builder’s Assist program of Lockwood Air-Cam. This plane is a twin engine, open cockpit plane consisting of an aluminum frame and fabric construction and capable of 120-130 miles per hour speeds. Cost approx. $98,000 plus any special equipment. Wonder if his 1997 airport experience had anything to do with his choice? Lance, we hail you as a credit to our Deissinger Family at large.

✞Brandon Stickney Commentary Jan 26, 2021 - Daniel Kane (1936 - 17 Jan 2010) The death of talk show host Larry King brings back memories. There are two Larry King moments that stand out for me: when, mid-interview, Larry King kissed actor Marlon Brando on the lips; and the other is when Lockport US&J Editor Dan Kane appeared on Larry King Live.
It was April, I believe, of 1995 when Larry King wanted to interview Dan after the newspaper published the exclusive on Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh's 1992 anti-government letter. The letter was written in response to the Branch Davidian cult tragedy at Waco. McVeigh hinted in writing that violence against the government may be needed to change "the system."
The letter gave America its first glance into tight-lipped McVeigh's mindset, possibly explaining his reason for killing 168 people in the heartland.
A limousine picked Kane up at his Livingston Place home, taking him to a Buffalo TV station for the satellite hook-up (no Skype in those days) for the interview. Kane joked to his friends that he was going to call Larry "Mr. Live" as if the name of the popular show was his last name.
The interview went well. But, after appearing on the Today Show and Good Morning America on the same day, Kane got sick of appearing on broadcast news.
Then, some backward-thinking Lockportians reacted negatively to his appearance in USA Today. The locals started taking it personally that we were being associated with the worst act of domestic terrorism in American history. That record still stands.
So, Larry King learned, from Kane, that McVeigh was a drifter, having left Lockport "years ago" and our small city wasn't a hotbed of militia sentiment. Interestingly, in a book called No More Wacos, terror experts say McVeigh acted in retaliation for the government's role of murder at Waco — and the bombing actually changed U.S. policies on such aggressive raids.
The media became an annoyance to many in those months after the bombing. The reporters packed up and went back home. The FBI gave Kane a subpoena to testify about any knowledge Kane had of the April 19, 1995 event, but as their investigation narrowed to McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the subpoena was withdrawn.
Today, younger generations don't recognize the name McVeigh. Though his picture appears alongside Charles Manson and Ted Kaszynski in the introduction to the FBI profiler TV show "Criminal Minds," McVeigh has been forgotten. Except for those whose lives were forever changed by his terrorist act, McVeigh himself is a historical footnote.
In fact, Dan Kane is more remembered here than McVeigh. Kane was a member of the High IQ Society, Mensa. Former US&J editor Kane was my boss and good friend.
Honored for his highbrow endorsements of Robert Kennedy, Kane took part in the Democratic Senator's memorial service. Thanks to former Congressman John LaFalce, Kane is also in the Congressional Record. Cancer took my friend home to God a few years back.
One could write a memorial to Kane as bright and impactful as one to the legendary Larry King. Maybe someday, somebody will.

*** MANAGING EDITOR RESIGNS AT LOCKPORT NEWSPAPER By Staff Jul 10, 1997 Updated Jul 23, 2020 - Daniel V. Kane, managing editor of the Union-Sun & Journal since 1983, has resigned. Kane, 61, stepped down after completing work on Tuesday's edition of the newspaper.
Mark Francis, publisher of Greater Niagara Newspapers, which operates the Niagara Gazette and Medina Journal-Register as well as the Union-Sun & Journal, said Kane had intended all along to leave as he approached age 62.

Dewhirst Rd., built 1958, not the original house
On the 1908 Royalton map there's a property labeled S Truax (Stacy Truax) on Dewhirst Rd. across from A J Behe, the son of Andrew and Carrie Sarah (Disinger) Truax. On the 1938 Royalton map the same property is labeled as belonging to Stacy Truax.
Also on the 1908 Royalton map the property next to the Truax property was owned by Mrs. E. Gritman. So it appears Stacy Truax married Mrs. E. Gritman's daughter Jennie. The property is roughly at 8820 Bunker Hill Rd. today where Andrew Truax's grandson Perry Truax's obituary stated he lived with his family. The property directly south of this property is currently owned by a descendant of Perry Truax.

partial 1938 Royalton map, Dysinger Corner
On the 1938 Royalton map above Stella Truax's name (highlighted) appears on an L-shaped property connected to Akron Rd. just south of Dysinger's Corner and the intersection of Akron Rd. and Bunker Hill Rd. There's no indication of houses on the map like on other maps. The property seems to be a portion of a larger property on the 1908 Royalton map that was apparently mislabeled C. Dysinger (see Andrew Truax above)
8162 Akron Rd.
This is the approximate location of Edward and Stella Truax's farm that faces Akron Rd. that he likely inherited after serving in the Spanish-American War and marrying Stella. There's not much information about this property since it is currently vacant. The present lot is 14 acres but there is an adjacent lot with 45 acres more which would be closer to the original size of Benjamin Disinger and Andrew Truax's farm. (see Andrew Truax above)

7116 Akron Rd., built 1870
George Truax's obituary stated he was a farmer on Akron Rd. On the 1938 Town of Lockport map George Truax's name appears on a property 1/2 mile from the Akron Rd. and Lincoln Ave. intersection. George didn't build this house in 1870 since he was born in 1874. He obtained it sometime after 1910. This house is currently owned by one of Samuel Disinger's great-great-grandchildren.
In the 1910 US Census for Royalton George, his wife Maybelle/Mabel, his daughter Ruth, and his mother Clara/Carrie Truax lived on Lewiston Rd. Unfortunately, George's name doesn't appear on the maps for the period, and many names of their neighbors don't either, so it's impossible to determine where they lived on Lewiston Rd. In the census, many of the residents of Lewiston Rd. indicated they were renters, not owners. The map makers either skipped renters, or the renters moved so often that the maps were quickly out of date. If you look at the maps for other rural areas, property owners' names didn't change, sometimes for decades.
Lewiston Rd, being more than 200 years old at the time, was one of the few improved roads in Royalton because it was the main route for travel from Batavia, NY, to Niagara County and Fort Niagara. (see Maps and Locations) Batavia was a busy travel hub for western NY until the Erie Canal was built, bypassing Batavia. On a Royalton map today, you can still see the travel stops on Lewiston Rd like Gilberts Corner, Royalton Center, McNalls Corner, and Terrys Corner, which had a hotel nearby at Cottage Rd that closed in the 1960s. Travelers meant opportunities for commerce, landlords, and jobs, attracting young singles and new couples who didn't own a farm. It's also likely George Disinger's stone hotel was a stop for travelers going to Lockport via Lewiston Rd, since it was only 3 miles away and was a backroad shortcut to east and south Lockport that some people still use today.
