Gae's extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including cherished individuals like Virginia, Terry, Jim, Rick, and Jerry, will fondly remember her vibrant presence.
Gae's love for people was evident in the time she cherished with family and friends, especially during the Jamboree days, which held a special place in her heart. Memories of laughter, music, and companionship from those days, as well as her cherished moments growing up on the farm, will be treasured by all who shared in them. Those who knew Gae will remember her for the interesting conversations and passionate opinions left a lasting impression, making her a memorable figure in her community. Gae's journey through life was marked by the love she gave and received. Although she is preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers and two sisters, and in-laws Floyd and Adelaide (Schrader) Dysinger, brother-in-law, Duane Dysinger; her memory will be celebrated by the many lives she touched. In lieu of flowers memorials in her name may be made to Hospice House of Shiawassee County at hopicehouseshia.org or to the Perry Public Library at mycdl.org, selecting Perry Online condolences may be shared at www.watkinfuneralhomes.com.
✞Our sincere condolences to the family of Gae Ann on her recent passing. May her memory live forever. I shall miss our weekly phone conversations with Gae. She would keep me updated on the recent Perry happenings and she would know how everyone in Perry was related to one another. One time she decided she wanted to shoot my .44 Magum revolver, Kennard and I kept telling her to keep it at arms length due to the sharp muzzle rise. She insisted on holding it close to her face so she could squaint down the sights. Sure enough the muzzle rose and whacked her in the forehead and knocked her silly. She never asked me to shoot it again after that. Those were the days. Eldon Dysinger August 9

✞EXPERT IN TRAINING POLICE DOGS APRIL 25, 1922 -- FEB. 7, 2005 By Staff Feb 12, 2005 buffalonews.com - Special Deputy William D. Tolhurst, chief of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department's Special Forces Unit and a world authority on training dogs for law enforcement, died Monday in his Lockport home after a short illness. He was 82. "His death is going to be felt throughout the entire law enforcement community," said Sheriff Thomas A. Beilein. "You couldn't help but be inspired by his dedication and drive. His legacy will be an inspiration to many officers." Special Deputy Tolhurst, known as Bill, joined the Sheriff's Department in 1956 and worked until he was hospitalized with cancer earlier this month.
"Bill was the foremost authority on bloodhounds and his contribution to law enforcement is immeasurable," said Special Deputy Don Burrows of the Sheriff's Department. He invented the Scent Transfer Unit, a "scent machine" the size of a small vacuum cleaner that transfers hidden smells at a crime scene onto steel gauze pads, which are then conveyed to a dog used to sniff out suspects or their weapons. The gauze pads can be frozen and used in future cases. The machine, which is used by law enforcement agencies worldwide, also has proven successful in tracking down lost children and Alzheimer's patients, Burrows said.
The dogs Special Deputy Tolhurst trained also were used in search and rescue, sniffing out both narcotics and people. He also trained Labrador retrievers to find old remains, a valuable asset in many cold cases, Burrows added. Beilein, who worked with Tolhurst since 1969, recalled Tolhurst and his bloodhound, Cleo, once followed disappearing footprints in the snow after an arson fire in a Boy Scout camp in the Town of Lockport. They led investigators right to the door of the suspects, who immediately confessed. In addition to starting the county's Special Forces Unit, Tolhurst founded the North American Search Dog Network and co-founded the National Police Bloodhound Association. He was a three-time past president of the association and wrote its first training manual. He also wrote the "Police Textbook for Dog Handlers" and "Cadaver Recovery for Law Enforcement."
The Lockport native was a graduate of Lockport High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942 and two years later went to sea in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After joining the Niagara County Sheriff's Department, he became a renowned author, lecturer and dog trainer for law enforcement agencies in many countries. He received numerous awards from police agencies in North America and Australia and appeared on several television shows over the years, including "60 Minutes" and "20/20."
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Natalie Calver of Lockport; two sons, Dean and Keith, both of Lockport; and a granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today in First Presbyterian Church, 21 Church St. Burial was in Cold Spring Cemetery.

✞Brandon Stickney Commentary Jan 26, 2021 - Daniel Kane (1936 - 17 Jan 2010) The death of talk show host Larry King brings back memories. There are two Larry King moments that stand out for me: when, mid-interview, Larry King kissed actor Marlon Brando on the lips; and the other is when Lockport US&J Editor Dan Kane appeared on Larry King Live.
It was April, I believe, of 1995 when Larry King wanted to interview Dan after the newspaper published the exclusive on Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh's 1992 anti-government letter. The letter was written in response to the Branch Davidian cult tragedy at Waco. McVeigh hinted in writing that violence against the government may be needed to change "the system."
The letter gave America its first glance into tight-lipped McVeigh's mindset, possibly explaining his reason for killing 168 people in the heartland.
A limousine picked Kane up at his Livingston Place home, taking him to a Buffalo TV station for the satellite hook-up (no Skype in those days) for the interview. Kane joked to his friends that he was going to call Larry "Mr. Live" as if the name of the popular show was his last name.
The interview went well. But, after appearing on the Today Show and Good Morning America on the same day, Kane got sick of appearing on broadcast news.
Then, some backward-thinking Lockportians reacted negatively to his appearance in USA Today. The locals started taking it personally that we were being associated with the worst act of domestic terrorism in American history. That record still stands.
So, Larry King learned, from Kane, that McVeigh was a drifter, having left Lockport "years ago" and our small city wasn't a hotbed of militia sentiment. Interestingly, in a book called No More Wacos, terror experts say McVeigh acted in retaliation for the government's role of murder at Waco — and the bombing actually changed U.S. policies on such aggressive raids.
The media became an annoyance to many in those months after the bombing. The reporters packed up and went back home. The FBI gave Kane a subpoena to testify about any knowledge Kane had of the April 19, 1995 event, but as their investigation narrowed to McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the subpoena was withdrawn.
Today, younger generations don't recognize the name McVeigh. Though his picture appears alongside Charles Manson and Ted Kaszynski in the introduction to the FBI profiler TV show "Criminal Minds," McVeigh has been forgotten. Except for those whose lives were forever changed by his terrorist act, McVeigh himself is a historical footnote.
In fact, Dan Kane is more remembered here than McVeigh. Kane was a member of the High IQ Society, Mensa. Former US&J editor Kane was my boss and good friend.
Honored for his highbrow endorsements of Robert Kennedy, Kane took part in the Democratic Senator's memorial service. Thanks to former Congressman John LaFalce, Kane is also in the Congressional Record. Cancer took my friend home to God a few years back.
One could write a memorial to Kane as bright and impactful as one to the legendary Larry King. Maybe someday, somebody will.
Brandon M. Stickney is a former reporter for the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal and author of the newly released book “The Five People You'll Meet in Prison: A Memoir of Addiction, Mania & Hope.”

Jeffery Scott Mallaber (d. Nov 2, 2021) & Allison Mallaber
►Obituary: click to expand/collapse
✞Jeffery Scott Mallaber, aka “Jeffie Baby”, left this world on November 2, 2021. His battle with glioblastoma has finally ended, and he is free of pain and confusion as he happily takes his place in the beautiful realm of Heaven. Jeff was born on November 10th, 1958, in Washington, D.C., to Clayton Ward Mallaber and Marilyn Behe Mallaber. Jeff leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Allison Mallaber, of Waterford, Vermont. They met long ago at their place of work, Wonder Bread & Hostess Cake of Ocala, Florida. Jeff was smitten right from the first introduction to Allison, and Allison was head-over-heels for Jeffie. Jeff also leaves behind his three daughters, Elizabeth Bonasera (and husband Nate), Olivia Drechsel, son-in-law Christian Drechsel, all of Littleton, Colorado, and Alicia Mallaber of St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Nine grandchildren are now left without a Papa. From oldest to youngest, they are Jacob (JJ), Zoe, Samantha, Lana, Jadalynn, Julius, Jace, Isabelle, and Josephine (Josie). Jeff loved being a Papa, buying gifts, giving horsie-rides, reading books, and appropriately spoiling the grandchildren as only a Papa can do. He even introduced them to his invented gyrating, 2-fingered personality, “Captain Voot”!
Many relatives are mourning the loss of Jeff. His sister Julie Judy and her husband Ernie, Danielle and Chris Waymire, Krystal and Rod Cumbus, George and Diana Oram, James Oram, Dori and Bill Nanry, all of Florida, and Bev Doherty of Bedford, NH, many, many cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews. Jeff was preceded in death by his son-in-law Jacob Mercer of California, his mother and father, Marilyn and Clayton Mallaber, and mother-in-law Elaine Oram Cornett, of Florida, and brother-in-law Dan Doherty of New Hampshire.
Although Jeff graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, his real passion was for medicine. He attended the University of Colorado Health Sciences College, and earned a degree as a Physician Assistant. Jeff's love of medicine and helping people was where he shined. He spent almost 13 years working for Urology Associates in Denver, Colorado, and almost two years with The Rocky Mountain Men's Health Clinic before being diagnosed with glioblastoma.
Hiking in the Rocky Mountains with his family was an activity Jeff enjoyed. He spent time with his many dogs over the years, and even some cats. Jeff learned to love his wife's goats, sheep, chickens, and especially horses. His golf score never improved to competition level, but he did have a mean swing, and often played in the Denver area. He loved working out at the gym, swimming in oceans, lakes, and pools, and was known as “Runs With A Beer” after a close encounter with a shooter in a downtown Denver bar. Whether fishing in the ocean or a lake, Jeffie Baby could brag about his catches of enormous, toothy, man-eating fish with the best-of-them.
Jeff's generosity was a beautiful thing! He donated money to many charitable causes, and also took a personal interest in helping people in dire financial straits to pay their rent, buy groceries, and obtain much needed vehicles. Jeff's generosity was legendary. Jeff Mallaber is already greatly missed. If you have any stories about Jeff you'd like to share, please send them to Jeff Mallaber c/o 131 Lee Farm Road, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to GoFundMe, “Jeff Mallaber's battle with brain cancer” or to “Spay Today” in Lakewood, Colorado. Memories and condolences may be shared with family at saylesfh.com.

✞Philip Ernest Petty, age 78, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at NorthCrest Medical Center. A lakeside memorial service will be held this summer as his ashes will be spread at Old Hickory Lake per his wishes.
Mr. Petty was born March 14, 1942 in Nashville, TN to the late Fred and Garnet Dysinger Petty. He was a story teller. From his days in Oedingen Germany as an Army private to his years in search of the biggest bass, to his on-the-job exploits as an electrician with the IBEW, he always had an anecdote or joke. His outgoing personality and friendly demeaner assured him of making lifelong friends. He was happy to hear your opposing opinion then tell you why you were wrong. He was a great Dad, ensuring we knew how to fish, set up a tent, beat another car off the line and wire a light fixture. He was a steadfast husband who loved his wife of 57 years. In his later years, when he could no longer fish, he bought a Spyder and toured the backroads as often as possible with his wife at his back, holding on for dear life. In his leisure time, he was a carpenter, a leather worker, a card player, a photographer and handy man. He brought both artistry and precision to his personal pursuits and could do anything he set his mind to. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
In addition to his parents Mr. Petty is preceded in death by his brothers, Russell Petty and Roy Petty. He is survived by his wife, Carol Tolbert Petty; daughters, Kimberly D. Petty of Nashville, Connie M. Lockert of Ashland City and Angela (Michael) R. Petty of Nashville; sisters, Peggy (Joe) Greer of Smyrna and Ona Herndon of Loudon, TN; and grandson, Ryan (Krystal) Lockert. Wilda (Dysinger) Piantoni (d. Sep 25, 2020) & Leo Piantoni🎖️(d. Apr 14, 2010)
►Obituaries: click to expand/collapse
✞Wilda Leone Dysinger Piantoni, 92, passed away in her sleep on September 25, 2020 at Park Vista Skilled Nursing Home in Fullerton. She was born Wilda Leone Dysinger at the home of her parents, 1015 E. Wilshire Blvd in Fullerton, California on October 26, 1927. As a child she lived in La Habra and Fullerton. Her father Glen Holmes Dysinger, was a teacher, then principal, then superintendent of the Centralia School District in Buena Park, California. Her mother, Verlie Maude Haskin Dysinger, worked in a cafeteria so her husband could get his teaching credential from Santa Barbara Teacher’s College, which was to become UCSB. Wilda was sent to live with an aunt and uncle and her cousins to save on living expenses for a short time. As a girl, Wilda was shy and a bookworm. She was tall at 5’6” and her mother was a petite 5’2”. She always felt gangly and awkward next to her mother. She had three good friends: Mary Lou, Ruth, and Barbara and they formed a tightly interwoven group. After Wilda graduated from Fullerton Union High School, she attended Fullerton Junior College (now Fullerton College). She met fellow student Leo Piantoni at the Fullerton Methodist Church in the Youth Group. Leo had just come back from World War II and was going to school on the GI bill. He was a year behind her in school even though he was 4 years older. But it was love. Wilda maintained that he was the love of her life and would always say “Look how cute your dad is” whenever she saw a picture of him. They got married in the Methodist Church in Fullerton on September 4, 1948. They then moved to Santa Barbara to get their teaching degrees from what was to become The University of California at Santa Barbara, Wilda’s in Elementary Education, and Leo’s in Industrial Education.
Leo got a job teaching at Brea Olinda High School and the young couple bought a house on Locust Avenue in Brea. When living there, no one would suspect that Wilda was shy when young because she was so optimistic, friendly, outgoing, helpful, and involved in EVERYTHING. She had a good sense of humor (she loved to laugh) and went out of her way to make others feel comfortable since she knew how it felt to be left out. When asked her resolution for the New Year for the newspaper, she showed her positive attitude by saying “I resolve to enjoy what ever the New Year brings.”
Wilda and her best friend Francis Reese participated in Brea Women’s Club, PTA, and Brea Congregational Church. Wilda was a great sewer and in her spare time sewed Halloween Costumes, street clothes, play clothes, and Fashion show creations. She was still a reader while raising 3 daughters, Beth (January 13, 1953), Ruth (September 21, 1954), and Mary (December 28, 1957). They outgrew the house on Locust and moved to Larchwood. Wilda taught a group of girls on the block including her own daughters, how to sew. She was interested in everything. She explored astrology, gourmet cooking, handwriting analysis, psychology, self-help, and many many more subjects. Wilda worked at various school libraries and was a Demo for Costco. She and Leo started traveling when he retired and she loved it! They went on over 100 cruises and even renewed their vows for their 50th anniversary on the original Pacific Princess, the Love Boat. One of her favorite places was Ephesus, Turkey because of the beauty of the architecture.
Wilda was thrilled when presented with a granddaughter by Beth and her husband Darrell Deeter on September 16, 1987. She even loved Stephanie Irene Deeter enough to convince Leo to take the whole family including Ruth and Mary on 8 cruises! Everyone in the family got the cruising bug so they went on 6 more family cruises before poor health prevented further travel.
Wilda and Leo moved to M219, a two-bedroom apartment at Morningside of Fullerton in late 2001 just after 9/11. When Leo passed away on April 14, 2010, Wilda moved to M123, a one bedroom at Mountainside where she was active in the movie committee, chorus, hall representative, and of course the library. She moved to Park Vista Skilled Nursing in 2014 where she was very happy and cheerful. She loved the people and staff especially since many of them had come from Morningside. She was known at Park Vista for her hats, her jewelry, and for yelling in a loud voice “YIPPEE-KI-YAY" when going down the hall to the dining room. She was so grateful for any little service anyone did for her. Wilda was a friend to everyone she met and left a little bit of happiness with each one. She began feeling unwell and passed away peacefully 4 days later in her sleep on September 25, 2020. Posted by Beth Deeter on November 13, 2020

✞George Michael Dysinger, age 67, passed away on Feb. 12, 2019, in Kingwood, after a long and valiant battle with ALS. His graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
George (Mike) was born Jan. 30, 1952, in San Antonio, to George Edward Dysinger and Greta Poston Dysinger. Growing up with his father in the Air Force saw him attending schools in Sanwich, England; Abilene, Texas; and Keflavik, Iceland; and graduating from Gatesville High School in 1970. He attended Texas A&M earning a PhD in education administration in 1979. He taught 10 years at A&M in the College of Engineering, from 1977 to 1986. George then moved to Houston and taught at Alvin Community College for a year. His next job was working at SIP engineering in 1988, followed by Parsons Engineering from 1988 to 1993 and finally BEI Engineering from 1993 to 2016. George had a passion for many things. He started collecting baseball cards at a very early age and never stopped. He amassed over 2,000 cards, as well as other memorabilia. You can ask anyone in the family about his Fiesta Ware. Every Christmas, we received Fiesta Ware. He had over 50 Fiesta Ware napkin rings in every color. Ranch Oak furniture was another favorite, filling many rooms in his house. George loved 1968 Ford Mustangs. Car parts were all over his house and garage. He collected items associated with Keflavik, Iceland and cherished many special memories from when he lived there. Model airplanes and military memorabilia held fond memories as well. Bottles of Tabasco Sauce, candy t-shirts, dishtowels, you name it, he had it and or gave it to someone he cared about. He had done work with genealogy back to the 1600s. He has cousins everywhere. If he knew you were taking a trip, he would say “You have a cousin in a graveyard there.” Beatles music was also one of his loves. He had an extensive collection of Beatles memorabilia. He even designed a quilt that someone pieced together for him of Beatles items. We all knew him to be brilliant, kind, quirky, silly, sweet, very opinionated and extremely eccentric. One of a kind for sure!
He was preceded in death by his father, George E. Dysinger and his brother, Glen E. Dysinger. He is survived by his mother, Greta Boales of Belton; sister, Margaret Campbell of Robinson; sister-in-law, Sherrie Dysinger of Waco; nieces, Mary and Hannah; nephews, Wayne, Shaun and Nathan; step-sister Janice Putska and husband, Jeff, along with their sons Andrew and Zachary Pustka; many aunts, uncles and cousins along with numerous friends and coworkers.
Our family wishes to express a very special thank you to his companion Virginia for the love, care and time you gave George. Also, thank you Kevin for all the things you have done for George. George will be deeply missed by his family. Everything is copacetic. Memorials can be made to the ALS Society online or at the Austin Office, 1315 Sam Bass Cir., Unit B5, Round Rock, TX 78681.

✞ Life Lived: Educator caring, empathetic, patient - Ray Fingerrfinger@stargazette.com | @SGRayFinger Updated April 17, 2015 - Whether you were a student, teacher, parent or just someone walking down the street, you always felt better after you met educator David Dallaportas. "It didn't matter if you were president of the United States or the person cleaning up at an airport where he was traveling, you were as important to him regardless of whatever your rank in life. He treated everybody the same," said his daughter, Alexis Dallaportas, 33, of Worcester, Massachusetts. "It was so important to him to make sure that everybody understood that they were important and that they were cared about. I think you don't find that very often," she said. "He had the uncanny ability to say the right thing at the right time to the right people."
David, 67, died April 2 at his home in Bath. He taught 15 years at the primary and elementary level in the Hammondsport school district, was principal of Mount Morris Elementary School for a short time and then served as principal of Center Street Elementary School in Horseheads for 21 years until he retired in 2008. Even as a sixth-grader, David knew he wanted to be an educator, said his brother Mark Dallaportas, 59, of Mount Dora, Florida."We were on a trip somewhere driving by SUNY Geneseo, and he knew he wanted to be a teacher. He said he was going to go that school, and sure enough, he did it. Very few people really know what they want to do, even as adults," Mark said. David earned his bachelor's degree at Geneseo, followed by a master's degree in education from Elmira College and an advanced degree in administration from SUNY Brockport.
He was a sophomore at Geneseo when he met his future wife, Veronica Infantino, and handed her a freshman beanie. He and his roommates had a system where if a really good-looking girl came up, they had a separate pile of beanies with their suite's phone number attached, Alexis retold the family story. They would say if you found a phone number in your beanie, call it because you won a prize. "It was their way of picking up girls back then," Alexis said. Her mom called the number, and her dad happened to pick up the phone. The only thing he could find to offer her as a prize was a golf ball. "I don't know if my mom still has the golf ball or not, but that's how they met," Alexis said. They were together all through college, wedded May 31, 1971, and were married for 42 years.
Mark remembers being outdoors a lot growing up with David and their brother, Bob, who lives in Sanford, Florida. "We lived out in the country between Bath and Savona, and there wasn't a whole lot to do out there, so we just found things to do," Mark said. "Dave and Bob were wrestlers in high school. Played a lot of sports. He became a good college wrestler as well." When they were older, they went camping together all over the Northeast, and he became an avid tennis player. "He was just down here playing in a tennis tournament in Cocoa Beach about four to five weeks ago," he said.
Alexis remembers being in a seat on the back of his bike as a little girl and his joy of being outdoors. "He'd ride me all around town out to go see the cows, the fairgrounds, everything like that," Alexis said. He enjoyed walking for a couple of hours every day. Sometimes he would walk up to Mossy Bank Park or around the school or the Bath Veterans Administration Medical Center. "He'd walk around and say 'hi' to the vets and talk to the vets. Talking to them and brightening up anybody's day that he interacted with," Alexis said. "He would go to the store every day and talk to everybody in the store — people behind the counter, people at the cash register, people he just ran into. He loved talking and catching up and interacting with people. He did the same thing at work," Alexis said. "He would just spend time with everybody who crossed his path and made them feel special because he truly believed that everybody was special."
At school, he based his decisions for the betterment of the children, and he never sought recognition for any of the things he's done, said Bill Congdon, retired Horseheads superintendent. "Every decision with a kid, even if a grandparent or a parent came in and swore and was so disrespectful, David always remained calm," Congdon said. "And at the end of the day when it came time to make the decision for that kid, the parent's or the grandparent's vulgarity or negative actions never even came close to playing a role in what we were going to do for that kid to make that kid's life a little bit better."
When Bill first came to Horseheads as an assistant principal at the high school, David took him under his wing and mentored him. Later, David would show he understood that some days weren't going as well for Bill as others. "He'd be the type that would call me up and say 'Hey, Bill, come on over — it's time for you to take a walk.' He'd have me come over and we'd walk around his building," Congdon said. "He was so proud of his staff that he would just say, 'Look at what's going on in this classroom. Look what these teachers are doing.' And sure enough, after about a half-hour or so, you'd be smiling and you'd be ready to go back and take on the challenges of the world." He was always looking for ways to interact with students, Alexis said. "He would take kids out to lunch if they did something special. He did a lot with his teachers and fellow administrators," she said. He went on weekend retreats to brainstorm new ideas on how to make the school and the school district better. "He loved having fun with the kids, too," she said. "He would dress up for Halloween with the kids. He dressed up as the Cat in the Hat one year." Every Thanksgiving, he would put on a paper headdress and take students on a "Buffalo hunt" through the school, then sit down and tell stories. "Every student was special to him." Mark remembers how much his brother loved his calling. "He loved it right up until he retired. We kept asking him, 'Gosh, you don't need to work anymore — why don't you retire?' And he retired at 60," Mark said. "He could have retired earlier, but he just loved it that much." Alexis said her father was never unhappy going to work a day in his life, even when that meant working late at night and attending school board meetings. "Not many people can say that. He loved his teachers, his staff. He loved the kids. He loved greeting everybody on the buses in the morning and saying goodbye to them at night," she said. "I know retiring for him was hard. It was very hard, but he also knew he wanted to do several things in his life with my mom." An English teacher at Haverling High School in Bath, Veronica had retired a few years before her husband. "It's hard to put him into words because he was just somebody I think is larger than life. Everything he did with passion, and everything he did, he did with intent and integrity and with love," Alexis said. "That man impacted so many people's lives and never asked for anything in return," Congdon said. "We smile at him every time we think of him." Follow Ray Finger on Twitter @SGRayFinger.

✞Martha Elizabeth Monsson finally lost her gallant six year battle with multiple myeloma cancer on February 20, 2014. Martha was a courageous, brilliant, and unique lady. She was born in Boston, MA, May 11, 1954 where her father was a graduate student at Harvard University. She grew up in Honolulu, where her father taught medieval history at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She majored in Geology at the University of Wyoming where she met her future husband, George. She worked as a geologist in Wyoming and then returned to Laramie to attend law school, graduating in 1988. Martha was a shining example of a life well lived and was well loved. A list of her specific talents, achievements, and interests would take far too much space but they included being a very talented spinner and weaver, author, scholar, black belt in Tae Kwon Do, geologist, attorney, historian, lecturer, embroiderer, accomplished cook with a specialty in medieval and renaissance foods, cave explorer, hiker, camper, traveler, seamstress, miniaturist, teacher, calligrapher, engaging conversationalist, captivating storyteller, loving mother, cherished wife, and, above all, fiercely true and brave. Martha laughed easily and often. Her distinctive and infectious laugh is something that will be particularly missed. She was a great and good friend to many people. Nearly everyone who met her, even briefly, learned something from her. Even in the last months of her life she continued to engage with the world. In November, 2013 PBS News Hour broadcast an interview with her regarding the Affordable Care Act. Her passing was noted on national television on PBS. She continued to do legal research up until a week before her death. On her last day she continued to research and take notes for a planned academic paper. Martha is survived by her beloved husband and son, George and Thomas, her brothers Jonathan and Paul Ernest of Hideaway, Texas, and her numerous beloved cats. Mark her memory well. We shall not see her like again. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 8th, at St. Charles Episcopal Church, 505 E. 8th Ave., Fort Morgan, CO. Martha would have preferred donations to an animal shelter instead of flowers.

✞Lockport Union-Sun & Journal February 14, 2011 LOCKPORT - Melva Irene (Behee) Roberts — We loved our mother. She was strong, stoic and true to her Universalist beliefs to her last knowing glance. She left us after 90 years on January 15, 2011. Elton, her beloved husband; and Gary, beloved son, left us years earlier. Our mother’s career was being a wife and mom. When we kids were older she worked as a book-keeper at the Agway in Gasport (retired 1972). She had been a great leader and organizer in the Niagara Frontier Girl Scouts starting in 1955. Her proudest accomplishments, outside the family, were working for young girls. She was General Camp Chairman for the construction of Camp Margaret Castle and served as board member and vice-president of the Niagara County Girl Scout Council. She also organized and ran a Girl Scout day camp that introduced a generation of girls to crafts, tractor rides and the outdoors, especially the “back-woods” of Gasport.
Born in Gasport on September 10, 1920 to Elmer J. and Edna Sullivan Behee (sister Fern Jean Lackey and brother Wells E. Behee), graduated Medina HS at 15, worked at G.C. A. James “Red” Hobbs (d. May 1, 2010) & Marcia (Cady) Hobbs (d. 18 Feb 2025)
►Obituaries: click to expand/collapse
✞ Lockport Union-Sun & Journal May 3, 2010 MEDINA — A. James “Red” Hobbs, of Gasport, an avid farmer, hunter and fisherman, age 81 years, left us too soon on Saturday, May 1, 2010, in Medina Memorial Hospital, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Red was born January 1, 1929, the son of the late Evelyn (Behe) and George Hobbs. He was also the step-son of the late Charles “Sam” Sims. Red leaves behind his beloved wife, Marcia (nee Cady); his loving children, Dr. Sheila (Joe) DeWitt of Auburn, NH, Sandy (Edward) Kress and Randy Hobbs, all of Gasport. Red is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Adam and Emily Kress and Leah DeWitt. He was the brother of Betty Regling of Middleport and is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Red was a concrete block truck driver for almost 44 years at the former Frontier Stone Products in Lockport, NY, retiring in 1996. One of Red’s great joys was driving truck and after retirement he continued to haul products for Walter VanBuren Farms. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and his passion was for farming as Red loved to put in a huge garden every year. He will be fondly remembered for sharing all the extras so nothing would go to waste. He was a man of integrity, honesty, generosity and knowledge. He loved to read every chance he got and could tell you pretty much anything you wanted to know about past wars and history. So many people will miss his famous words, “Did I ever tell you about the time…”, as he began to tell a story of days gone by. Red’s family and friends were his happiness, and often said how you can never have too many friends. One of his greatest quotes was, “You can’t begrudge getting old, because not everyone gets to be.” Even though Red left us all too soon, we know that he wished for us to celebrate his life, have a beer, remember the great times and most importantly, laugh.
As were Red’s wishes, there will be no calling hours, but there will be a memorial celebration and remembrance of his wonderful life for family and friends on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 1:00 PM, at the Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St., Middleport. Also per his wishes, Red’s remains were cremated and will be interred in Orangeport Union Cemetery, Gasport, NY. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, memorial contributions in Red’s name may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094, or the Wolcottsville Volunteer Fire Company.
✞Marcia J. Hobbs, age 83, passed away February 18, 2025 in her home peacefully while under Hospice Care. She was born June 8, 1941 to Raymond and Helen (Zorn) Cady and was a life-long resident of this area. Marcia started working outside the home after raising her children, and had worked at various places, eventually retiring from Ford Gum in Akron, NY. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her daughters clothes all throughout their childhood. Marcia was known as a very independent woman…always fixing things, refinishing furniture, as well as gutting and redoing many rooms in her home. Her determination to “do what had to be done” and having the knowledge and experience she had acquired, made her the epitome of strength and perseverance in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Marcia was a friend to all and will be dearly missed. Mrs. Hobbs was predeceased by her beloved husband A. James “Red” Hobbs, her siblings: Everett, Frank, Donald, Wayne and Carol Cady and Geraldine Hoffman. She is survived by her beloved children: Dr. Sheila (Joseph) DeWitt of NH, Sandy (Edward) Kress of Gasport, Randy Hobbs of Gasport, her cherished grandchildren: Adam (Brittany) Kress, Emily Kress, Leah DeWitt as well as several nieces and nephews. A private burial will take place in Orangeport Union Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY, 14094.
