✞"Born in Germany in 1813, Daniel Dysinger learned the trade of a cooper in his native land. Subsequently coming to America, the land of glorious opportunities, he followed farming and coopering in Ohio for a time. Coming to Michigan he entered one hundred and sixty acres of wild land in Odessa township, lonia county, his patent being signed by President Franklin Pierce [1853-1857]. Indians were then plentiful in this part of the country, while the deer, bears, and other wild beasts of the forest had not fled before the advancing steps of civilization. Erecting a log house for himself and family, he began the task of hewing a farm from the wilderness, and lived to see the country roundabout well settled, and himself the owner of a fine property. He was a man of deep religious convictions, an earnest student of the Bible, and frequently filled vacant pulpits, preaching to the people sermons of interest and power. In his early life he was identified with the Congregational church but later became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. When well advanced in years, he built a cottage at Lake Odessa, and there spent his last days in retirement, dying, in 1899, at the venerable age of eighty-six years.
Daniel Dysinger married first, Charlotte Galoo [sic]. Four children were born to them as follows: Thomas, a soldier in the Civil war, was living in Alabama when least heard from; Ina died in infancy; Laura, wife of S. W. Backus, of lonia, Michigan; and Albert, who was accidentally killed at the age of twenty-one years, having been kicked by a horse. Daniel Dysinger married for his second wife, Esther Jane King, who was born in Bloomville, Ohio, 1851, and there resided until after her marriage. She survived him, passing away in 1908. Of the five children born of their union, four are living, namely: Lillian Bell, wife of Allison P. Knapp, of Limon, Colorado; Alice, wife of B. Austin, of Odessa, Michigan; Charles M.; and Arthur, engaged in mercantile pursuits in Newaygo, Michigan."- From "A History of the Northern Peninsula of Michigan and its People" written by Alvah L. Sawyer and published by The Lewis Publishing Company of Chicago, 1911.
✞Lake Odessa Wave August 4, 1899 - Daniel Dysinger was born in 1815 in (unreadable) county New York. He moved to the state of Ohio and lived there for a number of Years. While there he joined the German Reform Church and worked in harmony with them. When he came to Michigan he took his letter and joined the Free Will Baptist Church, of which Elder Tupper was a minister. He acted as a deacon here as long as a member of the church, and was always ready to (unreadable) the minister in his work. That seemed to be a very happy time of his life, as he often in his last years spoke very enthusiastically of those times. There were several children of his former marriage, all whom had passed away before him. He married his present wife in 1863, from this last union there are four children living. He came to Lake Odessa three years ago last June, having been in failing health ever since moving here. Mr. Dysinger was a man of clear, strong faith in God and the bible. God was to him a father, and his word the manna from which he daily fed. He has lived a long life in a most wonderful century, and passed away just before its close. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church, Saturday forenoon, and the sermon delivered by the Rev. W.H. Skentelbu. The remains interred in Lakeside Cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends of the deceased and his sorrowing family.
✞Lake Odessa August 15, 1907 - Esther Jane King was born in Bloomville, Seneca Co., Ohio, December 22, 1837. When quite young she married Christopher Dysinger and was left a widow ten years later. A brother of the deceased husband, Daniel Dysinger took the place of his brother a few months later as her protector and companion. They immediately started for Michigan where Mr. Dysinger had already made considerable progress in hewing a home out of the woods on the site where they were to spend the rest of their lives together. The old homestead which was the scene of their struggles, and later their days of comfort is situated one mile north and two and one-half miles east of Lake Odessa. Eleven years ago their house burned to the ground and they bought a house and lot in town where they lived until Mr. Dysinger's death three years later. Like the true pioneers that they were they not only made forest and field produce enough to supply their needs, but were able to provide for old age as well as the raising of a family. There were born to them six children, one died in infancy and one at the age of thirteen. The four who remain to mourn the loss of mother are Mrs. Belle Knapp, of Lyman Colo., Mrs,. Alice Austin, Sebewa, Charles Dysinger of Kinross, upper peninsula, and Athur Dysinger of Newaygo, Mich. She is also survived by three brothers and four sisters.
Mrs. Dysinger embraced the Christian faith very early in life and was baptized uniting with the M.E. Church. After coming to Michigan however she neglected to identify herself with any church organization. She said but little concerning her belief but lived it in her devotion to her home and family. She believed in prayer and was often found upon her knees before God. Ever since the death of her husband she has made it her home with her daughters and was with Mrs. Austin, when about a year ago it was discovered that she was suffering from a cancerous growth. The telling inroads of that dread disease upon her health soon weakened her body until finally the last of May she was obliged to keep to bed. From that time she rapidly passed through the valley of the shadow of death. During the last few weeks she suffered much pain but through it all was very patient and often prayed that the release might speedily come. When asked if she dreaded the end, she always replied, " No, I'm ready to go." Early in the morning of the 8th of July she passed beyond to where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow or crying; neither shall there be no more pain; for the former things are passed away."
The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church Sunday afternoon, Rev. J.H. Davis officiating. A large number of friends and neighbors were in attendance. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery.
